An RPG combat system is more accessible when it lets players adjust specific barriers—such as fast reactions, repeated inputs, timing windows, dense visual information, or combat difficulty—without forcing them to lower every challenge. Clear feedback and settings that are easy to find matter too. No feature list can establish that a game will work for every player; the useful question is what each option changes and whether it addresses a particular player’s needs.
Accessibility in combat is more than an Easy mode
Combat can ask for several different kinds of effort at once: reacting quickly, aiming precisely, repeating an input, remembering a button sequence, noticing a threat, or interpreting a crowded screen. A single difficulty setting may change some of those demands while leaving others untouched.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends treating difficulty as a set of potentially distinct demands. A player might want less demanding combat but unchanged puzzles—or the reverse. As the Xbox Accessibility Guidelines put it, “The goal of difficulty options is to allow players of all skill levels and abilities to enjoy the game in its entirety.” The practical implication is to offer independent adjustments when a game’s systems allow them, rather than assuming one global setting suits everyone.
Controls: remapping does not remove every input barrier
Button remapping can help a player move an action to a more comfortable control, but it does not necessarily make the action easier to perform. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107 distinguishes three input barriers:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Speed: an action may require rapid presses or a quick response.
- Complexity: an action may depend on remembering or executing a sequence or combination.
- Duration: an action may require holding a control for a sustained period.
Changing which button performs an action does not, by itself, remove its speed, sequence, or hold requirements. Guideline 107 gives the example of a boss attack requiring “X + X + RT + A”: a player who cannot remember or perform the sequence may remain blocked even if those buttons have been remapped.
Other design options can address different barriers: map an action such as picking something up to one button, allow toggles instead of continuous holds, provide automatic holds, or let players reduce game speed. These are distinct approaches, not interchangeable fixes; which matters depends on the action a player finds difficult.

Difficulty: let players tune the challenge they mean to change
Combat difficulty may involve enemy aggression, damage or resistance, timing, aiming precision, or repeated close-combat inputs. Other game challenges—such as puzzles or active-memory demands—may need separate controls. Microsoft recommends identifying a game’s core mechanics and considering how each could be graded. Valve’s Steamworks accessibility guidance likewise recommends granular difficulty controls where possible and clear explanations of how presets differ.
When evaluating a game, check whether its settings let you adjust the relevant demand independently, and whether the descriptions say what changes. A preset labeled “Story” or “Easy” is less informative than a description of whether it changes enemy behavior, combat timing, damage, or another mechanic. A timer can add pressure unrelated to the core action; Steamworks advises against time limits when gameplay does not require reactions or precise timing, and recommends giving players time to read and process narrative choices.

Pace and timing shape how combat can be learned
A slower pace can give a player more time to notice a threat, decide what to do, and act. That may change the pressure of a combat encounter, but it does not prove that a game has a particular learning curve or that every player will find it easier to learn.
Official examples show what pace options can look like. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart accessibility article documents shortcut-selected game speeds of 70%, 50%, and 30%, plus a return to normal speed. It also describes toggle alternatives to continuous holds for firing weapons. These are documented settings, not measured evidence that players learn faster. Steamworks also recommends avoiding timing demands that are not necessary to the core gameplay.

Feedback and presentation help players read the fight
Knowing what is happening can be as important as performing an input. Threat indicators, audio cues, readable interface text, captions, and adjustable HUD elements can make combat information available in different ways. Which combination helps depends on the player and the game.
Electronic Arts’ official Dragon Age: The Veilguard accessibility resources describe modular combat presets that can adjust enemy aggression, enemy resistances, and combat timing individually. They also document subtitle and caption options, adjustable UI text, HUD visibility controls, and visual indicators for melee and ranged threats.

PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök accessibility page documents action-based remapping and control schemes, combat assists such as aim assist, adjustable subtitle and caption settings and UI text size, and audio cues for on-screen prompts in general and combat gameplay. These examples illustrate different options; they do not establish that either game suits every player or that one is more accessible than the other.
How to assess a game’s combat options
Instead of treating accessibility as a pass-or-fail label, look for concrete features that match the barriers you want to address. Useful questions include:
- Inputs: Can actions be remapped, simplified, or changed from holds to toggles? Are repeated or multi-button actions still required?
- Timing and pace: Can you slow the game or adjust timing demands? Do encounters impose timers where precision or reaction is not central?
- Challenge settings: Can combat difficulty be adjusted separately from puzzles or other challenges? Do preset descriptions explain what they change?
- Combat information: Are threats and prompts communicated through adjustable visual or audio cues? Can you change captions, text size, or HUD visibility?
- Discoverability: Are the settings easy to locate and understand before a difficult encounter?
A 2024 CHI study by Martinez, Froehlich, and Fogarty, “Playing on Hard Mode: Accessibility, Difficulty, and Joy in Video Game Adoption for Gamers with Disabilities,” discusses diverse player needs and workarounds, and points to opt-in customization and clearer, more discoverable information. A binary label cannot account for every person’s disability, tools, or way of playing. Game options also vary by platform, edition, and updates, so use the official accessibility information for the specific version you plan to play.
