PC sim racers keep returning to the original Assetto Corsa because it combines detailed driving and tire simulation with licensed cars and circuits, varied ways to race, and extensive PC customization. Its Steam review score is strong, but that score does not prove which features caused its popularity.
Why do people still play Assetto Corsa?
The original Assetto Corsa launched on PC on 19 December 2014. Its enduring appeal is easier to understand as a combination of features than as a single claim that it is the most realistic or best simulator. Kunos Simulazioni and publisher 505 Games describe a game built around driving detail, real-world content, flexibility, and room for players to shape their experience.
Those qualities suit different kinds of sim racers: someone can practice alone, chase a lap time, compete online, or customize cars and tracks. The official sources establish those options; they do not measure how much each one contributes to the game’s popularity.
What makes the driving feel sim-focused?
The official Steam description calls out specific tire behavior: flat spots, heat cycles, graining, and blistering. It also describes aerodynamic simulation and says development drew on practical motorsport knowledge, with cooperation from real-world drivers and racing teams. These details help explain the game’s simulation focus without establishing an independent ranking of its physics against other titles.

- Assetto Corsa features an advanced DirectX 11 graphics engine that recreates an immersive environment, dynamic lighthing and realistic materials and surfaces.
- Extremely detailed with single player and multiplayer options, exclusive licensed cars reproduced with the best accuracy possible, thanks to the official cooperation of Car Manufacturers.
- ASSETTO CORSA has been developed at the KUNOS Simulazioni R&D office, located just inside the international racing circuit of Vallelunga, allowing the team to develop the game with the cooperation of real world racing drivers and racing teams.
That focus gives players more to consider than simply steering around a circuit. Tire condition and vehicle behavior are part of the simulation described by the developer, making the game appealing to players interested in the detail of driving as well as the result of a lap. The Steam product listing provides the official feature description.
Which cars and circuits are included?
The official listing names manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Lamborghini, McLaren, and Lotus. It also says circuits were developed using laser scanning, with examples including Monza, Silverstone, Imola, Mugello, Spa, and Brands Hatch. Familiar cars and recognizable tracks give players a wide range of real-world machinery and venues to drive.

A dated 2018 announcement for the Ultimate Edition described that package as containing 178 cars and 40 track configurations across 19 circuits. Those numbers describe the edition as presented in that announcement, not a freshly verified inventory of the current store listing. The 2018 Ultimate Edition announcement gives the package figures.
How can players race or practice?
Assetto Corsa is not limited to a single career path or race format. The official listing includes career, events, challenges, custom championships, and online multiplayer, alongside practice, hot laps, time attack, drift, and drag racing. That variety lets players use the same game for structured progression, repeated lap practice, competitive sessions, or different driving disciplines.

- Assetto Corsa Competizione is designed to faithfully recreate the performance and the driving experience of real Blancpain GT Series cars through a sophisticated mathematical model that accurately replicates tyre grip, aerodynamic impact, engine parameters, suspensions and electronics systems that determine vehicle balance, as well as the influence of mechanical damage on the car's drivability.
- Unreal Engine 4 guarantees photorealistic rendering and an accurate representation of scenarios, car materials and weather conditions. Thanks to the multi-channel audio sampling of real GT cars, the game conveys captivating and immersive acoustic surroundings and realistic environmental effects.
- Even the secondary details are faithfully reproduced to make you feel the thrill of being in the cockpit of a real racing car. Doors, windshield wipers, headlights, racing lights, racing equipment and control devices such as ABS, traction control, engine ignition and ECU mapping, are all under the driver’s management to assure the best performance and offer the player total control of the car.
- Thanks to Laserscan technology, every official circuit is recreated with the utmost accuracy: all curbs and details perfectly fit their real counterparts to grant a gaming experience as faithful to reality as possible.
- A well-structured ranking system will evaluate individual performance and driving behaviour to reward the most virtuous drivers and promote fair play in online competitions. The matchmaking function makes sure that you can compete with opponents of similar skill level and easily find online races to join, while the leaderboards will allow you to compare single-lap performance with virtual pilots from around the world with the same car, circuit and weather conditions.
The listing also describes four driving-assist profiles, including a customizable profile. That gives players a way to adjust assistance rather than treating one setup as mandatory for everyone.
Why does modding matter on PC?
The official PC listing explicitly presents customization and modification as part of the game. It says players can reproduce and share cars and tracks, and use editing tools developed and used by the game’s developers. That makes extensibility a documented part of the PC proposition, not just an activity players have added around it.

- As with its predecessor, Assetto Corsa EVO will include cars from different classes spanning across years of motoring history. From road cars, classics, hypercars, and race cars. The most iconic representation of the automotive and motorsport world. Each vehicle is reproduced through Kunos in-house physics and graphic engine simulating mechanical, electronic, and aerodynamic performance, combined with the fidelity of the circuits created using Laserscan technology
- In Early Access 1 you will be able to experience a range of vehicles, tracks and game modes that will evolve on the road to our full 1.0 launch.
This does not mean every mod is official, supported, or equally reliable. It means the game is designed to allow players to modify and share content, offering another reason it can remain interesting beyond its included cars, tracks, and modes. The official listing describes the customization and editing-tool support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you play without a racing wheel?
Yes. The official PC page lists keyboard, gamepad, joystick, and steering-wheel support, including professional devices. It also lists VR, triple monitors, and TrackIR among display and tracking options. A wheel can be a natural choice for sim racing, but the listed input options do not make one a requirement.

- The Monte Carlo Rally is famous for unpredictable weather, featuring snow, ice, and dry asphalt. It tests drivers' skills and adaptability, making it one of the most challenging rallies in the world.
- This iconic location is being delivered as two fully laser-scanned stages, Col de Turini and Sisteron including fully dynamic weather conditions.
Hardware support is stated broadly; the listing does not establish compatibility for every individual device. Check the game’s current store information and the device maker’s documentation for a specific setup. See the official hardware listing on Steam.
What do Steam reviews say?
When the Steam listing was accessed on 7 October 2026, it showed 93% positive English-language reviews among 60,331 reviews, and 92% positive recent reviews among 868 reviews. These are dynamic store-page figures, not independently audited survey results; they can change, and they do not establish why reviewers liked the game.
The figures are a useful snapshot of player reception, not proof that Assetto Corsa is objectively the most realistic, most played, or best simulator. The original game is also distinct from Assetto Corsa Competizione and Assetto Corsa EVO, which are separate products.
