A Soulslike is not simply an action game that is difficult. It is a family of games where deliberate combat, attentive exploration, and setbacks that reward learning work together. Stamina systems, dropped currency, checkpoints, and challenging bosses are common, but none is a universal requirement.
What makes an action RPG a Soulslike?
“Soulslike” has no formal checklist. It is best treated as a family-resemblance label for games that often combine precise combat, demanding but learnable encounters, exploratory worlds, and consequences for mistakes. A 2024 scholarly review describes recurring mechanics while noting that some scholarship treats Souls as an aesthetic category rather than a conventional genre: The Soulsification of video games.
The useful distinction is how a game makes challenge work. Players are expected to observe, learn, adapt, and make progress—not merely endure difficulty. Hidetaka Miyazaki has described FromSoftware’s intent as encouraging players to study what is happening, memorize patterns, and learn from mistakes rather than experience difficulty as unfair punishment. See his PlayStation Blog interview.
How does Soulslike combat work?
Combat often rewards patience and observation. Players read enemy movements, choose when to attack or defend, and manage stamina or another limited resource. Depending on the game, the balance may involve dodging, blocking, parrying, positioning, or choosing when to take an aggressive risk.

Steelrising’s developers, for example, describe timing, studying opponents, avoiding being surrounded, and finding weaknesses as important to combat. Aggressive play also builds heat, which can temporarily incapacitate the player. Their combat-system feature illustrates how individual games can adapt the familiar pattern rather than copy one fixed formula.
Bosses and difficult enemies commonly test whether players can recognize a cue and change their timing, position, or strategy. The expected loop is not simply to repeat an attempt unchanged; it is to carry information from one encounter into the next. In a June 24, 2024 interview, Miyazaki described the design goal this way: “When players are killed, and they can understand why they were killed in an instance, and it feels justified – ‘Okay, yeah, that makes sense’ – that’s the game design we’re trying to achieve.” Game Informer interview.

How does exploration shape a Soulslike?
Exploration often asks players to read the world: notice a hidden route, find a shortcut, or infer something about a place from its design and objects rather than receive every answer through direct exposition. Interconnected spaces and environmental storytelling are common reference points, but the exact layout varies.
Miyazaki has explained that maps and level design can guide players as they assemble a partial understanding of the lore, surroundings, and enemies. As he put it, “So, the map and level design are supposed to serve as this guide in a way to help players pick up more information and piece together what they think that world is.” Game Informer interview, June 24, 2024.

That discovery loop does not require an open world. A game may use tightly connected corridors and regions, or offer broader areas where players can explore and return to a difficult challenge later. Miyazaki discussed that freedom as one approach in his Elden Ring interview with PlayStation; open-world design is a variation, not a genre prerequisite.
Is every difficult action RPG a Soulslike?
No. Difficulty alone is a weak test. A demanding game fits the label more plausibly when its combat, exploration, and failure systems combine to encourage observation and adaptation. If challenge is present without that broader design relationship, calling the game a Soulslike may obscure more than it explains.

Accessibility options also do not automatically disqualify a game. Steelrising’s developers describe its assist mode as a way for more players to engage with the game while retaining its combat focus. The useful question is not whether every player faces identical friction, but whether the game’s underlying design still centers on learning its encounters and navigating its world.
Are stamina, checkpoints, and dropped currency required?
No single feature is mandatory. A 2024 review identifies demanding combat, death-related consequences such as dropped currency in some games, checkpoints, interconnected levels, pattern-learning boss encounters, and environmental storytelling as recurring features. They are useful reference points, not a contract every title must satisfy: The Soulsification of video games.

In particular, stamina bars and bonfire-like checkpoints are familiar conventions, not universal rules. The more revealing question is what the systems do together: do they make combat decisions consequential, structure recovery and return, or encourage players to study their surroundings?

Use these questions to describe a game’s design rather than treating the label as a pass-or-fail test:
- Combat rhythm: What does the game reward—careful timing, resource management, blocking, dodging, parrying, or aggression?
- Failure and recovery: What happens after death, and can a player understand what to change on the next attempt?
- World structure: Are areas interconnected, open, or divided into discrete regions? How much route-finding and optional discovery do they invite?
- Progression and builds: How much do stats, equipment, and build choices change the approach to a fight?
- Assistance and access: Are summons, assist settings, targeting aids, or other options available to adjust friction while retaining the game’s combat focus?
Sands of Aura shows how a game can vary the formula: its developer feature describes reactive combat, buildcrafting, travel through a sandsea, and a compass intended to help players stay oriented without replacing discovery with a full minimap. Programmer John Sadler described the build goal as giving players “enormous flexibility to create wildly different, deeply customizable builds that synergize in unexpected and sometimes absurdly powerful ways.” Xbox Wire feature, February 27, 2026.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is another useful boundary case. Game Informer highlights its exploration, skill-based third-person combat, and challenging bosses, while noting that it lacks some RPG elements such as custom characters and robust stat upgrades. That variation shows why the label is often applied to a design family rather than a strict RPG checklist. Game Informer, “The Soul of Soulslike,” July 3, 2026.
