A video game adaptation works when it carries the qualities that make its source compelling into a different medium—not when it copies every plot beat. Film and television cannot give viewers the same control as a game, so strong adaptations preserve what matters, such as the emotional relationships, world, mood, or feeling of play, while reshaping the story for a guided audience.
Start with what the game gives you
There is no single adaptation formula. A game may offer a complete narrative with memorable characters, a distinctive setting, a satisfying gameplay loop, or a connection to real events. The screen story should be built around the source’s strongest material rather than forcing every game into the same mold.
Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, described the principle in a 2022 Sony Interactive Entertainment interview: “There’s not one size that fits all in terms of a method of adapting video games to film or TV.” Sony’s account of PlayStation Productions contrasts two very different starting points:
- A story-rich game: The Last of Us already had a developed world, characters, and narrative to draw on.
- A game without an established story: Gran Turismo centered its film on Jann Mardenborough’s real-life path from playing the game to becoming a professional racing driver.
The practical question is not simply “What happens in the game?” It is “What makes this particular game engaging, and what can film or television do with that?”

Preserve the core, not every detail
Faithfulness is a matter of judgment. A screen version can retain a game’s central relationships and emotional stakes while changing its sequence of events, point of view, or supporting material. Qizilbash put it this way: “It’s all about using the source material as inspiration versus as a rule book.”
For The Last of Us, Sony says the adaptation involved choosing what to leave out as well as what to add, including more room for side characters. The show’s first season adapted the entire first game, while creator Neil Druckmann has distinguished that from later story material that could not all fit into one season. PlayStation’s production discussion offers more detail on how the game and series were approached.

This is why a scene-for-scene copy is not a useful definition of success. A player may spend hours exploring, repeating challenges, or choosing how to proceed. A film or series must shape those experiences into a sequence viewers can follow without taking control themselves.
Translate the player’s experience for a guided audience
Games create involvement through agency: the player makes choices, learns rules, and acts within the world. On screen, the audience is guided through events instead. The adaptation has to find cinematic or dramatic equivalents for the feelings that gameplay produced.

The Royal Television Society’s 2025 feature on The Last of Us and Fallout quotes producer Bronagh Monahan on finding “the emotional core and the unique mood” and translating those into a story that works for television. Monahan also cautions: “Respect the source material but don’t treat it as gospel.” The Royal Television Society’s feature also discusses how the move from player agency to a guided story changes the audience’s experience.
Some adaptations translate a recognizable story; others translate a game’s structure or atmosphere. The BFI’s 2026 overview describes Exit 8 as turning a looping search for anomalies and rule-following into a claustrophobic cinematic experience. In a different mode, The Super Mario Bros. film can draw on the platform game’s kinetic joy and playfulness without needing to impose a complex dramatic premise. The BFI’s overview of video game adaptations explores these approaches.

Turing went on to assist with the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the UK government in 1952 for homosexual a
Choose the right adaptation strategy
Several approaches can work, depending on the source. The important thing is to match the strategy to what the game actually provides.
| Strategy | What carries over | Example | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close adaptation | Central relationships, story, and world | The Last of Us | The game already offered a strong narrative foundation; television could deepen selected characters and reshape events for the new format. |
| New story in an established world | Setting, tone, and recognizable details | Fallout | A series can expand a game universe without retelling one game’s plot. |
| Gameplay translated into screen structure | Rules, repetition, tension, or the sensation of play | Exit 8 | Repetition and anomaly-spotting can create suspense and claustrophobia on screen. |
| Real-world story connected to the game | The game’s role in a person’s real-life journey | Gran Turismo | Jann Mardenborough’s path from player to professional driver supplied a narrative where the game itself did not have an established fictional story. |
| Tone- and energy-led adaptation | Visual identity, momentum, and playful spirit | The Super Mario Bros. film | A light, kinetic game can inspire an entertaining film without being burdened with an unrelated serious tone. |
Creative understanding helps, but does not guarantee success
People involved in these adaptations often point to creators who understand or respect the game as an important ingredient. Sony says finding a showrunner who loved and respected the The Last of Us property mattered; industry voices in the RTS feature similarly emphasize familiarity with the source. These are informed practitioner explanations, not controlled evidence that a particular creative background guarantees a good adaptation.

Understanding the game is useful because it helps a team distinguish essential qualities from details that can change. The work still depends on how well the finished film or series tells its own story.
Judge success by the outcome you mean
“Success” can refer to artistic quality, audience response, commercial reach, or whether viewers return to the game. These are different measures, and one does not prove another. For example, Sony reported in 2022 that The Last of Us averaged 30.4 million viewers across its first six episodes; that is a historical company-reported figure, not a current audience total. Sony’s 2022 article also reported that the Uncharted film had exceeded $400 million in worldwide box office at the time.
Sensor Tower’s report page describes changes in engagement and sales after releases including Fallout and Minecraft. Those analytics can indicate renewed activity around games, but they do not establish artistic quality or prove that an adaptation caused every change reported. Sensor Tower’s report is useful for that separate commercial question.
A more helpful evaluation asks what the adaptation set out to preserve, whether its changes suit the screen, and whether its chosen approach serves the audience. A close retelling, a new story in a familiar world, and a film built around the feeling of play can all work—if each understands the particular game it is adapting.
