A semantic CSS class name tells a developer what an element represents or does—not merely what it currently looks like. Aim for a name that is brief, understandable, and consistent with your project’s conventions. There is no single required syntax: the right choice depends on the component structure and the tools your codebase uses.
What a semantic class name communicates
A useful class name gives a reader a quick clue about the element’s role, purpose, or place in a component. Google’s HTML/CSS Style Guide puts the balance simply: “Try to convey what a class is about while being as brief as possible.” Google HTML/CSS Style Guide
For example, in a search component, search-form identifies the component’s purpose. A submit button named search-form__submit also makes its relationship to that component visible. By contrast, blue-button describes a visual choice that could change during a redesign without changing the button’s role.
Prefer purpose over appearance, but name state clearly
Names based on a component’s purpose tend to remain meaningful when its styling changes. BEM’s quick-start documentation expresses the distinction this way: an element name should describe its purpose—“What is this?”—rather than its state or appearance—“What type, or what does it look like?” BEM quick start

That does not mean every class must describe a component or content role. A state class such as is-disabled can be clear when it explicitly marks state and the codebase applies state names consistently. The key is not to confuse a temporary presentation detail with the element’s enduring purpose.
Make ownership and scope understandable
A name can identify both what an element is and which component it belongs to. BEM makes those relationships explicit with blocks, elements, and modifiers. Its documented form is block-name__elem-name_mod-name_mod-val: hyphens separate words, a double underscore separates an element from its block, and a single underscore introduces a modifier. In this system, a block is a standalone component, an element is a part tied to that block, and a modifier expresses a variation. BEM advises against encoding deep DOM nesting through repeated element nesting: names should communicate useful relationships, not mechanically mirror every level of markup. Its naming-convention documentation says the primary purpose is “to give names meaning so that they are as informative as possible for the developer.”
Structured names are one option, not a universal requirement. A project with local CSS scoping may already make ownership clear without repeating the component name in every class. Choose names that make sense alongside the boundaries your architecture provides.

Choose a convention that fits the codebase
Consistency matters more than adopting a particular separator or capitalization style. BEM uses structured names; CSS Modules recommends camelCase for local names because they work naturally with JavaScript dot notation. Kebab-case can still be accessed with bracket notation, but it may be less convenient in that context. CSS Modules naming
Before settling on a name, check whether a teammate can infer its role, whether its owner is clear, and whether the spelling works in the project’s templates and scripts. - Readability: Can someone infer the class’s role without searching through the stylesheet?
- Ownership: Is the component relationship apparent, or does the project’s scoping system already establish it?
- Collision risk: Could a generic name mean different things in different parts of the application?
- Tooling fit: Does the spelling work naturally in the project’s templates and JavaScript?
- Consistency: Can the team apply the convention without creating unnecessarily long or deeply nested names?
BEM recommends class selectors and cautions that combining a tag and class in a selector increases specificity, which can make overrides harder. That is guidance from BEM’s methodology, not a universal rule for every project. BEM CSS methodology

A semantic class name does not give an HTML element native document meaning. Choose an HTML element for its actual semantic role, then use classes to identify project-specific components, roles, or states. Naming a <div> navigation, for example, does not turn it into a native navigation element.

A quick test for a class name
- Name the role: Describe what the element is or does, such as
search-form. - Show ownership when useful: If the relationship is otherwise unclear, use a convention such as BEM’s
search-form__submit. - Separate role from presentation: Prefer a purpose-based name over a color or size that could change, unless the class intentionally represents a state or visual utility.
- Check the project convention: Match its casing, separators, scoping approach, and tooling.
- Trim excess: Keep the name informative but avoid encoding details that are already clear from the component or markup.
