A phone charges as quickly as its supported charging mode allows, provided the adapter can supply that mode and the cable and connectors can carry it. “Plug” here means the wall adapter. The limiting part can be the phone, adapter, cable, or even the charging conditions.
How the phone, adapter, and cable work together
Think of charging as a chain: wall adapter → cable → phone. The adapter and phone must agree on a charging protocol, while the cable must have the right connectors and an adequate rating. The phone controls how much power it accepts, so the adapter’s advertised maximum is not a promise that your handset will draw that amount.
For example, Xiaomi says the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G can use an adapter rated up to 120W with its 6A cable, but a phone that supports 67W will adjust to 67W rather than taking 120W. Google likewise notes that higher-wattage chargers usually charge faster only when the phone supports the higher speed. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G charging FAQ and Google’s Pixel charging guidance explain these model-specific limits.
When the adapter is the bottleneck
A low-output adapter, or one that lacks the phone’s fast-charging protocol, may charge more slowly even if the cable is suitable. Huawei’s Mate 30 guidance gives a specific example: that phone’s stated maximum is 40W (10V × 4A), which a 5V/2A third-party charger cannot provide. Huawei also says an adapter without the phone’s fast-charging protocol may not reach its maximum supported power. These figures apply to Huawei’s example, not all phones. Huawei’s charging guidance describes the requirement.

Check the adapter’s output and supported protocol for your exact phone model, not just its largest wattage printed on the box. Also check whether using multiple ports changes the power available to the phone: Apple says a multiport adapter or hub may reduce output to an iPhone. Apple’s UK guidance on charging iPhone covers this behavior.
When the cable is the bottleneck
A cable can hold charging back if it is damaged, uses the wrong connector path, or does not support the current required by the phone’s fast-charging tier. Huawei recommends using a cable rated for at least the device’s charging current. Samsung’s specific guidance says to use a 5A USB-C cable for its listed 45W–60W “Super Fast Charging 2.0” tier and warns that a 3A cable will not work well for that tier. This is Samsung’s recommendation for supported Galaxy devices, not a universal requirement. Samsung’s Galaxy fast-charging guidance includes its adapter and cable advice.

Connector type matters too. Google says USB-A-to-USB-C charging is slower for Pixel phones than USB-C charging. Apple’s UK guidance recommends USB-C PD with a USB-C cable for iPhone 15 models and later, and USB-C-to-Lightning for iPhone 14 models and earlier; it also says USB-A charging limits iPhone 15-and-later models to 7.5W. These are brand- and model-specific examples, so check the official specifications for your handset before choosing a cable. Google Pixel charging guidance and Apple’s UK iPhone charging guidance list their respective recommendations.
Why a phone may charge slowly even with compatible equipment
Charging speed is not fixed throughout a session. The phone manages power, and conditions can reduce the rate. Apple says processor-intensive use, such as demanding activity while charging, can slow charging; charging may also pause in extreme temperatures. Remaining battery level and environment can affect behavior too, as Xiaomi notes for the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G. Apple’s guidance and Xiaomi’s FAQ describe these factors.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
How to find the limiting part
- Look up the exact phone model. Find its official maximum charging rate and supported protocol. Do not infer the phone’s limit from the adapter’s wattage.
- Check the adapter. Confirm it supplies a compatible charging mode and enough output. If it has multiple ports, check whether using another port reduces the output available to the phone.
- Check the cable and connector path. Match the connectors and any stated cable-current requirement to the phone and adapter. If the cable is damaged or suspect, try a reputable replacement that meets the phone maker’s guidance.
- Reduce avoidable slowdowns. Stop demanding tasks while checking charging speed and let a hot phone cool before charging.
These checks identify likely compatibility or operating-condition limits; they do not establish a guaranteed charge time. USB-IF announced USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1 in 2021 with support for up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable, up from the earlier 100W limit. That is a standard-level ceiling, not a claim that phones charge at 240W. USB-IF’s USB Power Delivery announcement explains the revision.
