A modern RPG feels like classic Final Fantasy less because it copies pixel art or menu windows than because it recreates a particular rhythm: a distinct party travels through a world, makes meaningful tactical choices, grows into new roles, and discovers stories along the way. There is no single template shared by every classic Final Fantasy, but developer interviews around Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined show how that feeling can be carried forward without simply reproducing the past.

There is no single classic Final Fantasy formula

The older Final Fantasy games differ in their casts, battle systems, worlds, and storytelling. So a modern game does not need to copy one specific entry to evoke the series. A better test is whether its systems create a journey shaped by party identity, deliberate decisions, meaningful growth, and exploration.

Octopath Traveler offers an unusually direct lineage example: producer Masashi Takahashi said the team intended it as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. That makes it a clear expression of one classic-RPG tradition, not a definition of every Final Fantasy game. The interview also discusses the ensemble cast and the game’s visual design.

A party makes the journey feel shared

Classic-style role-playing often depends on more than a protagonist: party members bring different personalities and battle functions, and their combination shapes how the player handles obstacles. In discussing Octopath Traveler, its developers described building an ensemble cast; the choice of eight characters also made it possible to form two groups of four. That is one way to create a broad group story, not a requirement that every modern RPG needs eight leads.

Square Enix: The Card Game CHOCOBO'S Crystal Hunt Deluxe
  • Number of Players: 2 - 4 Players
  • Playtime: Approximately 10 - 20 minutes
  • Package Size: L 5.83 in x W 4.13 in x D 1.18 in

When comparing games, look at whether party members feel meaningfully different in combat and whether their presence changes the journey beyond adding more dialogue. A distinct cast helps make travel feel like a shared adventure rather than movement between isolated fights.

Turn-based combat makes decisions visible

Command-based turns give players time to consider who should act, which resource to spend, and which threat to answer. Octopath Traveler‘s developers said turn-based combat was intended to welcome new or lapsed RPG players, while also adding strategic dimensions to the system. Their interview covers that rationale alongside the game’s character interactions.

Turn-based combat alone does not guarantee a classic feel. Encounters need to make the party’s abilities and choices matter: a decision should respond to the situation, and character roles should give players useful alternatives. A modern game can preserve deliberate planning while introducing mechanics that add fresh tactical questions.

Character identity should matter outside battle

Role-playing feels richer when a character’s identity changes what the player can do in the world, not just which attack appears in a battle menu. Octopath Traveler uses path actions to let characters engage with town residents in ways beyond ordinary conversation. Director Keisuke Miyauchi described the aim as helping players feel they were role-playing a particular character, such as a scholar.

This makes exploration and social interaction part of the character system. As you compare RPGs, ask whether different characters reveal distinct information or opportunities, or whether their identities matter only in combat and scripted scenes.

Exploration needs reasons to look around

A world feels like a place to explore when routes and settlements offer details worth noticing. In an interview about Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the development team described retaining the original game’s camera-spinning searches for hidden chests, pots, and barrels. It is a specific exploration behavior preserved for this remake, not a rule that every RPG needs hidden-object searches.

The broader point is that exploration should reward curiosity in ways that suit the game. Towns, paths, and environmental details can make a journey feel connected, while discovery gives players reasons to engage with the world between major story events. The remake’s developers also discuss its environments, interface, narrative pacing, and combat changes.

Nostalgia works best as a visual language, not a copy

Pixel art and familiar interface conventions can signal an older RPG, but they are surface cues. Octopath Traveler‘s developers described combining pixel characters and imagery with three-dimensional environments, depth, lighting, and shadows. Their approach uses recognizable retro forms while giving the presentation a modern sense of space.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined takes a different route: its developers described preserving the original’s atmosphere while streamlining redundant narrative sections, revising the UI, adding voice acting, and changing battle pacing. The producer’s stated concept was “nostalgic yet innovative.” That describes the team’s intent, not a guarantee that every change will suit every player.

Compare the design, not just the graphics

These two games illustrate different ways to carry classic-RPG qualities into modern releases. Neither is presented here as the definitive modern successor to Final Fantasy.

Example Classic-RPG connection Modernization described by developers What to compare
Octopath Traveler Producer Masashi Takahashi called it a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI; the team discussed its ensemble cast. Turn-based combat with added strategy, path actions, and pixel art combined with 3D depth, light, and shadow. Party structure, battle choices, town interactions, visual language.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined A remake designed to retain the original’s atmosphere and camera-based exploration behavior. Streamlined story sections, revised UI, retained camera searches, faster handling of weaker battles, and more deliberate tough encounters. Narrative pacing, exploration, interface, battle pacing.

When judging whether another RPG has that classic Final Fantasy feel, consider whether party members have distinct roles, turns reward planning, character growth changes available tactics, and exploration uncovers stories or secrets. Also notice which conveniences make the experience smoother and whether they preserve the journey’s rhythm. Those design choices matter more than a retro-looking screenshot alone.

The examples here are grounded in developers’ descriptions of their intentions and features; they are not a controlled measure of how every player experiences nostalgia. A Square Enix interview about Octopath Traveler 0 provides another current example of developers discussing party-scale combat, character-specific abilities, town building, and keeping characters useful through the endgame.
