A good NHL backup goalie is ready to play well despite irregular starts, gives the starter useful rest, and provides dependable coverage when the team needs it. The role is not simply a matter of having a strong save percentage: preparation, workload, shot difficulty, and the team’s deployment plan all matter.

Why the backup role is difficult

Unlike a starter who may play frequently, a backup can go many days between starts and then face the speed and pressure of an NHL game with little time to find a rhythm. NHL.com reporting describes that gap as a challenge to timing and feel. Casey DeSmith told NHL.com, “The confidence issue, and if you have a bad one not getting right back in is the hardest part.” Eric Comrie described the difficulty as “finding that game rhythm.” Those comments reflect the players’ roles when the articles were published, not necessarily their current affiliations. What makes a backup effective

Preparation that carries over to games

Practice can be an imperfect stand-in for a game. Open, uncontested shots may not require the tracking, movement, or decisions a goalie needs when opponents screen, pass across the slot, or create unpredictable rebounds. NHL.com reporting describes ways teams try to make preparation more representative, including traffic, one-timers, competitive drills, video, and feedback from a goalie coach. A backup also needs to avoid building habits around easy practice shots that do not translate to game situations. NHL.com on the mental demands of the backup role

A repeatable technical foundation

Reliable positioning and puck tracking can help a goalie perform when game timing is rusty. Some coaches favor a technically sound, more conservative positional approach for backups, but that is a coaching view, not a rule that every goalie should use the same style. The relevant test is whether the goalie can read plays and execute sound technique under game conditions.

A mental reset between opportunities

A backup needs a routine that sustains focus without knowing exactly when the next start will come. Carter Hutton told NHL.com that a goalie can build a rhythm through practice, training, and preparation, adding: “Your head controls a lot of that; the way we think and prepare. Do we prepare to succeed or do we prepare to fail?” The quote describes Hutton’s role at the time of publication. NHL.com’s account of preparation and confidence

Useful coverage for the team

A capable second goalie lets a club rest or protect its starter and gives it coverage if that goalie is unavailable. Teams may share starts or split some back-to-backs, but the choice depends on factors such as the two goalies’ relative ability, rest, opponent, travel, schedule, and health. A backup’s contribution therefore includes the flexibility and recovery time provided to the team, not just personal statistics. Seattle Kraken’s overview of goalie workload

How to judge a backup’s performance

Start by understanding the goalie’s opportunity: check starts and minutes played, then consider shots faced and outcomes such as save percentage and goals-against average. A small sample can swing sharply when only a few goals separate a good-looking stretch from a poor one, so avoid treating a short run as a definitive verdict.

When available, measures such as goals saved above average per 60 minutes or quality-start percentage can add context. A 2025 retrospective study defines goals saved above average relative to a league-average save percentage on the same shot volume, standardized per 60 minutes in its analysis. It also uses a stated rule to classify quality starts. These are the study’s operational definitions, not universal NHL standards. Neither these measures nor standard box-score statistics fully capture shot type, distance, angle, rush chances, pre-shot passes, goalie movement, defensive errors, or the goalie’s read. Pair statistical comparisons with video and team context. Ekhtiari et al., 2025 retrospective cohort study NHL.com on evaluating goalies beyond statistics

How much should a backup play?

There is no single ideal backup workload established by the historical figures available here. In a 2019-era NHL.com analysis, Stanley Cup-winning goalies since 2009 averaged 44 regular-season games; the sample included Matt Murray’s 13 NHL games in 2016 and excluded his 31 AHL games. The same article reported an average of 46 regular-season starts among Cup-winning goalies since Martin Brodeur won in 2003. These historical comparisons describe particular samples and periods; they do not establish an ideal number of starts or prove that a workload causes playoff success. NHL.com’s historical workload analysis

The article also compared four goalies with 70 or more games in the preceding five regular seasons with 22 in the five full seasons before that. Those are period-specific counts from that analysis, not current league totals. Similarly, the Seattle Kraken’s workload article attributed a just-over-11-percent save-percentage reduction for goalies playing both nights of a back-to-back to Eric Tulsky’s 2013 analysis, while noting that later work by Andrew Thomas and Dom Luszczyszyn found a less significant effect. That estimate should not be treated as settled or current consensus. Seattle Kraken’s discussion of back-to-back workload
