An RPG makes character creation or development and the enactment of a role in a fictional world central to play. Rules and player choices shape what the character can do. A CRPG is a computer role-playing game; an action RPG describes a style of play built around real-time decisions and direct control. Those labels can overlap: an action RPG can also be a CRPG.
What makes a game an RPG?
There is no single feature that settles every genre debate. RPG is a category that different communities use in different ways, and its forms have developed distinct traditions. José P. Zagal and Sebastian Deterding’s scholarly chapter, “Definitions of Role-Playing Games” (2018), identifies recurring traits rather than a universal checklist.
In practice, look for a combination of these elements:
- A character and a role: The player creates, selects, or develops a character and acts through that character in a fictional world.
- Rules that shape action: Systems govern what the character can do and how actions or conflicts are resolved.
- Player-directed choices or goals: The player makes decisions that shape the character’s actions, aims, or path through the experience.
- Development over time: Characters often gain abilities, change through play, or become more capable, though a level system is not required.
These traits can appear in different combinations and receive different emphasis. Statistics, combat, branching story choices, and character progression are common, but none is a universal pass/fail test. An RPG does not have to be fantasy-themed, turn-based, dialogue-heavy, or built around a party.

The category also reaches beyond computer games. Zagal and Deterding describe tabletop role-playing, live-action role-playing, computer RPGs, and multiplayer online RPGs as commonly recognized forms that share historical roots but have developed different styles and communities.
What is a CRPG?
CRPG means computer role-playing game. It identifies a computer-mediated form within the broader RPG family—not a fixed set of mechanics. The label alone does not tell you whether a game uses a particular camera angle, party size, combat system, or level of real-time control.

As a result, “CRPG” and “action RPG” are not opposing labels. The first names a broad form; the second describes an emphasis in how play is controlled and paced. A computer RPG can use real-time, direct-control combat and also fit the action-RPG description.
What distinguishes an action RPG?
Action RPGs generally put real-time decisions and direct control in the foreground. Instead of separating the player from the character with a menu or tactical interface for each action, they ask the player to act continuously through the character. Combat is often prominent, and the player may mainly control one character rather than manage a party.

These are tendencies, not requirements. Real-time control does not mean character statistics stop mattering, nor does the label guarantee that every challenge is decided by reflexes. Xbox Wire Staff’s 2015 overview of action RPGs notes that the boundary from traditional RPGs is difficult to draw precisely.
Compare the play, not just the labels
When a game sits near the genre boundary, consider how several systems work together rather than treating one visible feature as decisive.

No single row decides the genre. A game may have real-time combat yet place substantial weight on character builds and role development, or offer tactical choices while keeping character progression relatively simple.

The history helps explain why the labels do not form a tidy either-or split. Zagal and Deterding trace RPGs to a shared historical ancestor in tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, while noting that later forms developed in different communities.

Xbox Wire’s historical overview points to Rogue and Dragon Slayer as influential 1980s examples in the development of action-RPG conventions. It describes Diablo (1997) as a PC action RPG emphasizing combat, randomized dungeons, and loot. It also uses Dark Souls to illustrate how intricate combat, detailed character customization, and action-based controls can coexist. These examples show tendencies and evolution; they are not a definitive list of what qualifies.
Why players disagree about what counts
People may use “RPG” to emphasize different parts of the experience: taking on a role, building a character, making consequential choices, or engaging with a particular tradition of rules and combat. Because the category is used across varied forms, disagreement does not automatically mean one side is using the term incorrectly. It is more useful to explain which features a game emphasizes than to insist that one feature settles the debate.
