It operates the selected gadget. The left stick moves the character; the right stick supplies the action—swinging a tool, manipulating radar, or rotating the Dash Hoop. That made the controller’s two sticks part of the game’s central activity: chasing and catching monkeys.
How the two sticks worked
Ape Escape gave each analog stick a distinct job. The left stick moved the character through the 3D levels, while the right stick directly controlled whichever gadget was selected. The right stick was therefore an action control, not simply a camera or aiming stick.
The game’s gadgets included the Stun Club, Time Net, Monkey Radar, Slingback Shooter, Dash Hoop, Sky Flyer, R.C. Car, and Magic Punch. Their differing functions meant players had to adapt how they used the right stick as they switched tools.
Why the right stick felt unusual
Many games use a second stick to look around, aim, or move a cursor. Ape Escape instead made its movement drive a gadget’s action. A directional input could make the Stun Club swing in that direction; other tools called for different motions or interactions. Players learned physical gestures associated with the equipment rather than relying on one universal camera-control pattern.

That variety took experimentation. In a Time Extension development interview, Kanetaka recalled that the team struggled to decide how players should control gadgets. The Stun Club’s directional swing—an idea inspired by a programmer’s concept for the Slingback Shooter—helped solve that design problem. The Dash Hoop nearly was removed because the team had not found a useful ability for it; the proposal to make it increase speed at the cost of control gave it a role.
How the controller changed the game’s design
The two-stick scheme grew out of the hardware opportunity. Shuhei Yoshida recalled that the team initially wanted to make a 3D open-field game about capturing monkeys. After Sony’s hardware team showed them a new controller with two analog sticks, the developers reconsidered how the game should work. Kanetaka’s account likewise describes an initially more conventional control plan that changed after the team saw the new controller.

Yoshida said he pushed for a game that required both sticks, even when colleagues worried that this would exclude players with a regular controller: “We are making a game only playable with the two analog sticks, the DualShock controller”. The commitment made the input scheme more than a convenient option: the gadgets and the act of catching monkeys were designed around it.
Dual Analog and DualShock are not the same milestone
The names need a little care when describing the original game’s controls. PlayStation’s controller timeline dates the Dual Analog controller to April 1997. It dates the DualShock to November 1997, when the controller added two vibration motors and analog sticks with rubber grips and longer stems. The distinction matters because the game’s defining idea was the two-stick layout, while “DualShock” refers to the later controller name often attached to its legacy.

PlayStation’s retrospective describes Ape Escape as requiring the new two-stick control scheme and credits it with helping popularize the left-stick movement/right-stick aiming pattern. The game’s own use of the second stick went further than that familiar shorthand: it made the stick operate a range of tools. A PSX Data Center entry for the NTSC-U PlayStation release also describes the stick assignments and gadget actions.

Ape Escape made the controller feel like part of the game’s world. Instead of treating the right stick as a general-purpose view control, it connected stick movement to the selected gadget, so changing tools also changed the player’s physical interaction with the game. That close link between input and objective is what made the original’s controls stand out—and why its two-stick design remains central to how the game is remembered.
