Míša Hejná, Anna Bothe Jespersen, and Susan Yi Sencindiver published “The Age Chameleon: Social and Biological Effects on Madonna’s Ageing Voice” in the Nordic Journal of English Studies, volume 25, issue 2, in 2026. The peer-reviewed study analyzed Madonna’s interview speech, measuring fundamental frequency (f0)—a key acoustic correlate of pitch—and the first two vowel formants, F1 and F2, which help describe vowel quality.

The University of Copenhagen’s October 6, 2026 account says the interviews span the 1980s through 2021. The authors’ central conclusion is that Madonna is difficult to classify by age profile. They interpret variation in her pitch and vowel quality as potentially indexing “age non-specificity, or agelessness.” That is a linguistic interpretation of one performer’s voice, not a test of biological age.
What the study reports about pitch
The account of the study describes several rises and falls rather than a steady shift in one direction. Some of the lowest pitch values appeared in the 1980s; her voice generally became higher after the late 1990s. The researchers also observed a pitch drop around 2013, followed by a rise in later years.

These are descriptions of measurements from Madonna’s interviews. The reported pattern is not a numerical estimate of how women’s voices typically change with age, and the available account does not give a pitch effect size.
What it reports about vowels
The researchers examined vowels in words including “trap,” “dress,” “kit,” “lot,” and “thought.” The University of Copenhagen account says some vowel sounds were produced farther forward in the mouth, with greater distinction between categories. The authors describe the resulting pronunciation patterns as difficult to assign to expected age or geographic patterns, and suggest they may contribute to an age-nonspecific performer image.

What might explain the changes—and what remains uncertain
Anna Bothe Jespersen said the rise in pitch after 2013 could reflect conscious voice modification; hormone therapy could also have played a role. These are possibilities, not demonstrated causes. Neither explanation, according to the account, fully explains the broader pattern, and the study should not be used to infer Madonna’s medical history.
The accessible journal record and institutional account do not state the number of interviews or samples, how interviews were selected, the recording conditions, or detailed acoustic-analysis procedures. They also provide no named statistic or numerical effect size. Those omissions limit how precisely readers can assess the measurements from the public materials.

- It is a case study: the analysis concerns one public figure, not a representative sample of women or a general model of vocal aging.
- “Younger” is not a clinical measurement: the authors’ interpretation concerns how the voice may be perceived or socially indexed, not proof of a younger biological voice.
- Pitch and vowels are distinct evidence: the study considers both pitch variation and vowel quality; neither alone establishes a speaker’s age.
