1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPhotonic computing can speed up selected AI operations, especially matrix calculations, by using light to carry and transform signals. But an optical core is only one part of an AI system: data must reach it, results must be detected, and electronics often still handle memory, control, nonlinear operations, and readout. Power use, useful precision, and total speed therefore depend on the complete architecture—not just how quickly light performs a calculation.
What limits photonic computing for AI?
The central limitation is system integration. Light can perform some linear operations in parallel, but a working AI processor must also prepare and supply inputs and weights, carry out nonlinear operations, manage noise and calibration, and return usable results. Every handoff between optical and electronic components can add energy use, delay, or complexity.
That makes photonics best understood as a possible accelerator for selected operations, not as evidence that an entire AI system can run optically or will automatically outperform an electronic one. The relevant comparison is end to end, for a specific architecture and workload.
Why do photonic AI chips still need electronics?
Many AI workloads rely heavily on linear algebra, such as matrix-vector multiplication. Photonic hardware can use light to carry signals through operations of this kind. Electronics commonly remain responsible for some combination of data preparation, control, memory, nonlinear functions, and output processing.

The optical-electrical boundary depends on the design. Farmakidis, Dong, and Bhaskaran’s 2024 review groups integrated photonic neuromorphic approaches into three broad categories:
- Incoherent electro-optic processors: combine optical processing with electronic functions.
- Coherent electro-optic processors: also combine optical and electronic processing, with different architectural choices.
- All-optical neural networks: aim to keep more of the computation in the optical domain.
These categories do not have identical conversion, precision, or integration costs. The review describes potential advantages of up to two orders of magnitude in throughput, power efficiency, and compute density for coherent and incoherent approaches compared with an example electronic platform. That is a future projection, not a result establishing a general advantage in deployed AI systems.
A concrete hybrid design
Kalinin and colleagues’ 2025 Nature paper describes an analog optical computer that combines 3D optics and analog electronics. In that particular system, optics perform matrix-vector multiplications; analog electronics handle nonlinear operations, subtraction, and annealing; and the system reads out digitally after its analog iterations. This is one specific architecture, not a template for every photonic processor.

Does photonic computing use less power?
It may reduce the energy or time required for particular operations, but the optical calculation alone does not establish the power consumption of the complete system. A fair accounting needs to include the components and work required to get a result, not just the optical core.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Light sources, such as lasers, and the modulators that encode signals.
- Photodetectors and any digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital conversion used.
- Analog and digital electronics, memory, and movement of data to and from the compute element.
- Control, calibration, thermal tuning or cooling, and the host system.
The cited reviews and demonstration establish that conversion and integration matter, but they do not provide a single comparable, independent end-to-end energy figure for photonic and electronic accelerators running the same production AI workload. A component-level result or projection should not be treated as a universal system-efficiency measurement.
For example, Kalinin and colleagues project about 500 tera-operations per second per watt at 8-bit precision for their analog optical computer, and describe that projection as more than 100 times the efficiency of leading GPUs. It is a projection from that paper, not a measured general-purpose deployment comparison; it should not be read as a guaranteed power saving for an AI workload.

How accurate is optical computing?
Light carries analog signals, but analog does not mean unlimited useful precision. Noise, device variation, signal levels, calibration, conversion, and the sensitivity of a particular computation all affect the accuracy a system can deliver. Precision also cannot be reduced to an ADC bit count alone: optical nonlinearities, amplification, and time-domain processing create additional engineering challenges identified in the 2024 review.
In its small-scale inference demonstration, the 2025 Nature paper reports 9-bit precision. The authors use an iterative fixed-point scheme to improve robustness against analog noise. That is a result for one design, not a field-wide precision ceiling or a guarantee of accuracy across models and tasks.
When evaluating a precision claim, check whether it refers to nominal device precision or application-level numerical accuracy, how it was measured, what calibration it requires, and whether it holds across the workload being discussed.

Does optical computing solve the AI data-movement problem?
No. Photonics can support high-bandwidth optical links and accelerate selected on-chip operations, but those are separate capabilities. An AI system still has to move inputs and weights to the compute element, manage intermediate values, and return outputs. A hybrid design also has to encode signals into light and detect or convert optical results where required.
If a workload is limited by memory access or the rate at which data can be supplied, faster optical arithmetic may not improve total performance. A fast core can sit idle while it waits for data, or its advantage can be reduced by conversion and readout.
The 2025 review by Wan and colleagues discusses optical-link development using measures such as bandwidth density and energy per bit. Those measures describe links; they do not by themselves demonstrate the end-to-end efficiency of an optical AI compute core.

What makes photonic systems hard to integrate and scale?
A scalable processor must bring photonic devices and electronics together densely and reliably. The 2025 integration review covers lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers, modulators, photodetectors, waveguides, chip-fibre couplers, multi-material integration, and electronics co-design. It identifies thermal pathways and manufacturing yield as near-term bottlenecks and describes trade-offs among bandwidth density, thermal design, yield, and cost.
Consequently, a successful component or optical link does not by itself establish that a high-density, affordable photonic AI accelerator can be manufactured at scale. Integration, heat management, and production yield all affect whether a promising design can become a practical system.
What has a photonic AI computer demonstrated so far?
Kalinin and colleagues’ paper, “Analog optical computer for AI inference and combinatorial optimization,” was published in Nature on 3 September 2025. Its reported results need to be separated by what was physically demonstrated and what was modeled or projected.
- Physical inference hardware: supports inference for models with up to 4,096 weights through decomposition, and reports 9-bit precision.
- Physical optimization platform: solves optimization instances with up to 64 variables.
- Digital twin: demonstrates larger problem instances in a model of the system; these are not physical-hardware results.
- Performance projection: the paper discusses larger-scale performance estimates, including the power-efficiency figure described above; these are not measurements of a general-purpose deployed system.
The demonstration shows a particular hybrid analog optical system operating at a small scale. It does not establish that photonic hardware is universally more accurate, more efficient, or faster than electronic accelerators across AI workloads.
How to compare photonic and electronic AI systems
Before treating an optical-throughput or efficiency claim as an AI-system result, look for the following details:
- Architecture: which operations are optical, which are electronic, and where conversion occurs.
- Workload: the supported model or task, including how weights or computations are represented.
- Energy boundary: whether the figure includes light sources, conversion, electronics, memory movement, control, and thermal management.
- Accuracy: what precision means in the report, how it was measured, and the task-level result.
- Performance: measured throughput and latency for the full operation, rather than optical-core throughput alone.
- Practical scale: data movement, manufacturing yield, thermal requirements, and cost.
No cited source establishes one photonic architecture as superior across workloads. Until comparable end-to-end measurements exist for the specific systems and tasks being considered, optical computation should be assessed as one part of a processor design—not as a stand-alone efficiency claim.
