For Kotlin Multiplatform teams, the release also added shared web source sets and separated Wasm tooling packages from project dependencies. These are meaningful maturity and workflow changes—not a guarantee that every Wasm app or library is production-ready.
What Kotlin/Wasm Beta means
Kotlin/Wasm reached Beta in Kotlin 2.2.20. JetBrains describes the milestone as bringing greater stability, alongside changes to npm dependencies, JavaScript interop, debugging, and more. Beta is a maturity milestone; it does not establish that every application, browser combination, or ecosystem library is ready for production. See the Kotlin 2.2.20 release notes and the JetBrains release announcement.
This release built on earlier work rather than introducing Wasm-specific build infrastructure for the first time. Kotlin 2.2.0 had already separated Wasm build infrastructure from JavaScript and added a build/wasm area and Wasm-specific npm tasks. Version 2.2.20 advanced the target’s maturity and refined its tooling workflow. See What’s new in Kotlin 2.2.0.
Share code between JavaScript and Wasm targets
With Kotlin Multiplatform’s default hierarchy template, the new webMain and webTest source sets sit above both js and wasmJs. That lets a project put code common to its browser targets in webMain, with shared tests in webTest, while keeping target-specific code in the corresponding source sets.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is useful for libraries that publish to both targets and for Compose Multiplatform web applications that want a JavaScript fallback for broader browser coverage. The shared layer does not remove the need to check target-specific APIs or compatibility: code in a common source set must work for both targets. The release notes’ shared web source-set section also warns that existing custom shared source sets or a target renamed to js("web") can conflict with the default hierarchy. Review the source-set layout before adopting the template.
Wasm npm dependencies are separated from project dependencies
For the wasm-js target, Kotlin 2.2.20 moves Kotlin tooling’s npm dependencies outside the project directory. The project’s own dependencies remain in build/wasm/node_modules, and its lockfile tracks user-defined dependencies. This separation is enabled by default for wasm-js; Kotlin/JS retains its previous dependency behavior in this release.

For teams, the practical distinction is between packages needed by Kotlin’s tooling and packages the application declares. When investigating dependency changes, inspect the project lockfile and Wasm build output rather than assuming that Kotlin/JS and Kotlin/Wasm now use identical npm layouts. Details are in the Kotlin 2.2.20 release notes.
JavaScript exception handling depends on browser support
Kotlin 2.2.20 improves exception interop between JavaScript and Kotlin/Wasm when the browser supports WebAssembly.JSTag. JavaScript exceptions crossing into Kotlin can provide more information on the Kotlin side, and JavaScript can catch Kotlin exceptions as JavaScript errors. The release notes specify these browser versions for the improved behavior:

| Browser | Version for the described exception behavior |
|---|---|
| Chrome | 115 or later |
| Firefox | 129 or later |
| Safari | 18.4 or later |
These are thresholds for this specific interop improvement, not the general minimum browser versions for running Kotlin/Wasm. Older browsers retain the prior exception-handling behavior. See the release notes.
Browser debugging serves source files in development
Gradle tasks matching *DevRun now serve source files automatically, allowing developers to set breakpoints, inspect variables, and step through Kotlin code in a browser. This is a development convenience with an important security boundary: the served sources are exposed. Kotlin advises against running these tasks in cloud or production environments. Use them for local development instead. The warning is in the Kotlin 2.2.20 release notes.

Check the Kotlin/Wasm compatibility baseline separately
The browser thresholds for JavaScript exception interop do not describe overall Kotlin/Wasm browser compatibility. Kotlin’s configuration documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, lists default operation for Chrome 119 or later, Firefox 120 or later, and Safari/WebKit 18.2 or later. It also says the toolchain uses WasmGC; wasmJs defaults to the legacy exception-handling proposal, while wasmWasi defaults to the new proposal. Browser and proposal support can change, so check the current Kotlin/Wasm supported versions and configuration page against the browsers your users actually need.
Review uses of KClass.qualifiedName
Kotlin/Wasm does not store class fully qualified names by default. In 2.2.20, using KClass::qualifiedName reports a compile-time error unless class FQNs are enabled with -Xwasm-kclass-fqn. Enabling that compiler option increases application size, so check whether the feature is genuinely needed before turning it on. The behavior and trade-off are documented in the release notes.

What to check before upgrading a web project
- Source-set hierarchy: confirm the default hierarchy fits your existing custom source sets and target names before relying on
webMainorwebTest. - Browser coverage: compare your supported browser versions with Kotlin’s current Wasm baseline; treat the newer exception behavior as a separate, narrower capability.
- Dependency workflow: for
wasm-js, account for tooling packages being outside the project and user dependencies remaining in the project lockfile. Do not assume this 2.2.20 change applies to Kotlin/JS. - Development task safety: keep
*DevRuntasks in local development because they serve source files. - Reflection and size: locate
KClass::qualifiedNameusage and enable-Xwasm-kclass-fqnonly if the application needs fully qualified names.
Kotlin 2.2.20’s documented changes do not establish a universal Kotlin/Wasm performance advantage over Kotlin/JS; the release material provides no benchmark comparison.
