An IT support technician helps people use workplace technology by diagnosing problems, restoring service, setting up devices and accounts, and explaining solutions. It can be an entry point into IT, but employers’ education and credential expectations vary by location and job. The practical first step is to compare local postings with the skills you can demonstrate.
What does an IT support technician do?
The title can also appear as help desk technician, service desk analyst, desktop support technician, IT support specialist, or computer user support specialist. The exact mix depends on the employer, but the role combines technical troubleshooting with customer service. Support may be delivered in person, over the phone, or electronically.
Typical responsibilities
- Receive user requests, ask questions to identify the problem, and record the issue in a tracking system.
- Diagnose and fix hardware, software, operating-system, account, printing, and network or communications issues, or assign the request to the team best equipped to handle it.
- Set up, install, maintain, or upgrade computers and related equipment such as printers and projectors.
- Manage user accounts and security as part of the employer’s processes.
- Show users how to use software and explain what happens next when an issue cannot be fixed immediately.
That means the job is not simply “fixing computers.” A technician also gathers accurate details, keeps a useful service record, judges when to escalate a fault, and communicates clearly with the person affected. The UK National Careers Service profile describes these duties; employers may divide them differently across a support team.

Technical knowledge helps a technician isolate faults, but understanding the user’s problem and communicating the resolution are just as important.
#1 Best Overall
Technical foundation
- Familiarity with computer operating systems, hardware, and common software.
- A methodical approach to fault-finding: establish what is happening, gather details, test likely causes, and determine whether the problem is resolved or needs escalation.
- Working knowledge of accounts, peripherals, and basic network or communications issues relevant to the employer’s environment.
Service and communication
- Active listening and clear verbal and written communication.
- Patience and customer-service judgment, especially when a user is frustrated or unfamiliar with the technology.
- Attention to detail when recording symptoms, steps taken, and outstanding work.
- Teamwork, since some problems need to be handed to another support group.
O*NET’s computer user support specialist profile emphasizes understanding and expressing information orally and in writing, alongside the technical work. Clear records and explanations are practical parts of the job, not extras.
How can you become an IT support technician?
There is no single route or credential that the cited career sources establish as mandatory everywhere. Requirements depend on the country, employer, and particular role. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says some user-support jobs may be open to candidates with a high school diploma and relevant IT certifications, while other positions may require more study. The UK National Careers Service lists college or university courses, apprenticeships, and trainee employment as possible routes.

Compare routes against the jobs you want
- Review local job postings. Note repeated requirements for education, operating systems, ticketing processes, hardware, networking, or a named credential. A requirement appearing in target employers’ listings is more useful to your decision than assuming one qualification is universal.
- Choose a learning route that fits your circumstances. College or university study, an apprenticeship, and learning while employed differ in cost, time, and the amount of supervised workplace experience they offer.
- Build demonstrable troubleshooting practice. Practice diagnosing common user problems and explaining the steps and outcome clearly. The sources identify practical fault-finding as central, but do not prescribe one universal project or checklist.
- Fill specific gaps with training. CompTIA A+ and Microsoft Learn are examples of industry-standard training named by the UK National Careers Service. Consider a course or certification when it addresses a gap or appears repeatedly in the postings you are targeting; neither source says CompTIA A+ is required for every support job.
When comparing options, weigh cost and time, hands-on practice, fit with local employers, and whether the training supports your intended direction—user support, networking, systems administration, or security. A credential can support an application, but it does not replace the ability to troubleshoot and communicate.

What do IT support technicians earn, and what is the outlook?
Pay and employment estimates depend on geography and occupational classification. The figures below are official sources’ estimates or guidance for their stated locations; they are not interchangeable or a prediction of an individual offer.
| Location and occupational category | Pay information | Outlook information |
|---|---|---|
| United States: computer user support specialists | Median annual wage of $61,860 in May 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. | Employment projected to decline 3% from 2025 to 2035. |
| United States: computer support specialists overall | Not stated here for this broader category. | About 48,700 openings per year on average are projected from 2025 to 2035, mostly because workers transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force. |
| Canada: related NOC 22221 category | National median wage of C$31.47 per hour shown by Job Bank Canada in 2026. | Not stated here. |
| United Kingdom: IT support technician profile | £24,000 a year for a starter to £36,000 for an experienced worker, according to the National Careers Service profile. | Not stated here. |
The U.S. figures come from the BLS computer support specialists outlook. A projected decline in one occupational category can coexist with annual openings across the broader category: openings include replacement hiring when workers transfer or leave the labor force. The Canadian figure is listed for a related classification in Job Bank Canada’s wage data; currency, geography, and occupational definitions differ from the U.S. figures. The UK range is profile guidance from the National Careers Service.

What are the working conditions and career paths?
Support work may take place in an office, at a client’s business, or in a contact centre. Some roles require evening or weekend shifts; the BLS notes that computer support may need 24-hour availability. Check the schedule and service coverage in an employer’s listing rather than assuming all support jobs follow the same hours.
With experience, a technician may move into senior support or management, or pursue further training toward network engineering, database administration, systems analysis, or IT security coordination. These are possible directions listed by the UK National Careers Service, not guaranteed promotions. The best next step depends on which work you enjoy and which skills your target roles require.
