Xbox Helix is the working name used for Microsoft’s announced next-generation Xbox console, officially referred to in its announcements as Project Helix. Microsoft says it is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games. The company has also confirmed a custom AMD-based system-on-chip (SoC) and co-design for the next generation of DirectX. Those statements describe the project’s intended direction, not a complete product specification: price, release date, final name, performance figures and the full compatibility picture have not been announced in the cited material.
What is Xbox Helix?
Project Helix is Microsoft’s announced next-generation first-party Xbox console. Xbox Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald introduced its intended platform scope on March 11, 2026: it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Microsoft’s later developer-facing description adds that the device is powered by a custom AMD-based SoC and is co-designed for the next generation of DirectX.
Microsoft’s wording establishes an ambition to bring Xbox and PC games into the same next-generation console platform. It does not establish that every PC game, every Xbox title, or every storefront will be supported. The details of how games will be installed, launched, purchased or optimized have not been provided in the cited announcements.
What Microsoft has confirmed about Project Helix
- It is a next-generation Xbox console. Xbox describes Project Helix as its next-generation console, rather than a confirmed retail product name. Xbox Wire’s March 11, 2026 announcement identifies it as part of the company’s next-generation hardware work.
- Its stated game scope includes Xbox console and PC games. Ronald wrote that Project Helix is “designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” This is a stated design goal, not a complete compatibility list. Xbox’s March 2026 update also restated this scope.
- It uses a custom AMD-based SoC. Microsoft Game Dev described the system as powered by a custom AMD-based SoC. The announcement does not specify the chip’s CPU or GPU configuration, memory, storage, power use or measured performance.
- It is co-designed for next-generation DirectX. Microsoft says the work is intended to create developer opportunities around performance, rendering and simulation. No consumer-facing feature list or benchmark accompanies that description.
- It is part of a broader Xbox strategy. In its April 23, 2026 statement, Xbox described console as foundational while also discussing cloud as a way to bring the experience to other devices. That company-wide context is not confirmation that a particular cloud feature will be built into Project Helix. See Xbox’s “We Are XBOX” statement.
How could Xbox Helix differ from current Xbox devices?
The clearest announced difference is the named platform scope: Microsoft explicitly includes PC games alongside Xbox console games. That could make Project Helix more PC-connected than a conventional console platform, but Microsoft has not explained whether that means access to particular PC storefronts, a desktop-style interface, a specific operating mode, or any particular game catalog.

The hardware information is also new in broad terms, but too limited for a performance comparison. A custom AMD SoC and next-generation DirectX co-design describe the foundation and development approach; they do not show how Helix will perform against Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation consoles, gaming PCs or handhelds. Microsoft’s phrase “leading performance” is an aspiration in its announcement, not a published test result.

- A complete hardware specification or independently measured performance.
- How Xbox console and PC game support will work in practice, including supported storefronts and the size of the compatible catalog.
- The scope of compatibility with previous Xbox games.
- Compatibility with current Xbox controllers or other accessories.
These are unanswered questions in the cited announcements, not evidence that any particular feature will or will not be included.
Does the Xbox Wireless Controller work with Project Helix?
Microsoft has not confirmed Project Helix accessory compatibility in the cited material. Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Games Showcase recap announced an Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition as a separate product, but did not say that it works with Project Helix. Its existence should not be treated as a compatibility announcement.

What to watch for before treating Helix as a buying option
For a meaningful comparison with current consoles or gaming PCs, look for Microsoft to publish a final specification and explain the practical details behind its game-support claim. The most useful announcements will cover:
- Price, release timing, final retail name and which regions will receive the console.
- Hardware specifications and performance measurements that can be compared on a like-for-like basis.
- How Xbox and PC games are accessed, and which titles and storefronts are supported.
- Compatibility with existing Xbox libraries, controllers and other accessories.
Until those details are available, Project Helix is best understood by its confirmed direction: a next-generation Xbox console intended to play Xbox console and PC games, built around a custom AMD-based SoC and next-generation DirectX co-design.
