Depending on the platform, it may handle claim intake and review, forms and regulatory filings, payments, case workflows, analytics, or connected policy and billing processes. The category has no single standard feature set: some systems focus on claims administration, while insurance suites combine claims with other functions.
Who uses workers’ compensation claims software?
The system’s intended users shape what it does. Employers may use it to coordinate workplace injury claims and related return-to-work processes. Insurers and TPAs may need tools to administer claims across a portfolio, while public agencies may use software to receive and process claims under a government program.
For example, Tyler describes an agency-focused system that supports claim submission, supervisor review, recording Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs findings, and tracking compensation paid. Insurity, by contrast, describes an insurance platform spanning policy, claims, billing, and analytics. These examples illustrate different product scopes rather than a universal design.
Claims administration can also involve people outside the organization processing a claim. South Carolina’s Workers’ Compensation Commission reported on a claims application that lets associated stakeholders view, download, and print claim documents, alongside a portal for uploading forms and making electronic payments.

What does the software do?
Capture and review claims
Claim intake features record a reported injury and route it for review. Tyler’s product description, for example, names claim submission and supervisor review. Buyers should check which information can be captured, who can review it, and how the system routes exceptions or incomplete submissions.
Manage case activities and decisions
Workflow tools can organize activities, referrals, approvals, reserves, and payments. Insuresoft describes configurable support for these processes. Configurability matters when the organization has different claim types, approval rules, or responsibilities across teams.

Prepare forms and support compliance work
Some platforms use claim data to select and populate forms. Origami Risk describes state and federal form selection, indemnity calculations, and average-weekly-wage calculations. In a June 16, 2025 sell sheet, the vendor says its library contains “over 8,000 state and federal forms”; that is the vendor’s product claim, not an independently audited count. Buyers should verify that the system supports the forms and rules for the jurisdictions and programs they handle, and how updates are maintained.
Submit electronic reports
Electronic data interchange (EDI) can support required reporting to state systems. Origami Risk describes EDI submissions, while Riskonnect identifies First Report of Injury (FROI) and Subsequent Report of Injury (SROI) electronic filings for state requirements. Confirm the relevant filing types, jurisdictions, and exception-handling process rather than assuming that a product’s general EDI capability covers every requirement.

Coordinate return to work and claim closure
Insuresoft describes support for return-to-work processes. North Carolina’s workers’ compensation training program covers return to work, claim closure, and litigated claims. Software can organize tasks and records around these activities, but it does not replace jurisdiction-specific claims expertise or determine what a particular case requires.
Connect claims with policy, billing, and stakeholders
An insurance suite may link claims to policy and billing records; Insurity describes a platform that also includes analytics. Other systems emphasize stakeholder portals, such as the document and payment functions reported by South Carolina’s commission. Integration can reduce duplicated entry, but the actual data shared and the users permitted to access it depend on the system and its configuration.

How to compare systems for your organization
Start with the organization’s role and the claims it handles. A public agency processing program claims, an employer coordinating workplace cases, and an insurer administering claims across policyholders may need different workflows. Compare products against the work your team actually performs, not feature labels alone.
| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Role and claim types | Does the system fit your work as an employer, insurer, TPA, or public agency, and the claim types you administer? |
| Lifecycle coverage | Which stages are supported, from intake and review through reporting, payment, return to work, and closure? |
| Jurisdictions and programs | Can workflows and requirements be configured for every state or program you serve? |
| Forms and EDI | Are the required current forms and filing types supported? How are regulatory changes handled, and what happens when a submission is rejected? |
| Policy and billing integration | Does the platform need to connect claims with policy or billing records, and are those functions included or integrated separately? |
| Portals and access | Can external stakeholders access the documents or functions they need, with access limited by role? |
| Approvals and payments | Can the organization configure its approval steps, reserve practices, and payment workflows? |
| Analytics and reporting | Can users produce the reports needed for internal oversight, program administration, and required reporting? |
| Deployment and integrations | Which deployment options and integrations are available, and what systems must exchange data with the claims platform? |
| Implementation and maintenance | What data must be migrated, how much workflow configuration is needed, and who maintains forms and regulatory updates? |
What to verify before choosing a platform
- Map real workflows and jurisdictions. Document claim types, review and approval roles, reporting obligations, forms, and return-to-work or closure processes in each jurisdiction you serve.
- Test required forms and exchanges. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the actual forms and FROI or SROI filings you need, including validation, rejected submissions, corrections, and update procedures.
- Identify integrations and migration needs. List systems that must connect, such as policy, billing, payment, or document services, and determine what historical claim data must move.
- Request demonstrations using your scenarios. Have the vendor show role-based access, audit trails, approvals, stakeholder access, and reporting using representative cases—not only a generic product tour.
- Clarify change management. Establish how configuration, regulatory changes, user training, and ongoing system administration will be handled.
Vendor descriptions establish what their products are designed to offer, but they do not provide an independent comparison of cost, implementation time, security certifications, or customer outcomes across platforms. Treat capability statements as starting points for demonstrations and verification, not as evidence of a universal product ranking.
