VRAM is the graphics card’s fast memory for data the GPU needs to render images. There is no universal VRAM minimum for streaming with OBS: what you need depends mainly on the game and its resolution and graphics settings, plus OBS scenes, effects, and other GPU-heavy apps. A hardware encoder can take video-encoding work off the CPU, but OBS still uses the GPU to render and composite its scene.
What VRAM does
Video RAM, or VRAM, is memory on or associated with a graphics card. It holds graphics data—such as textures, shaders, and other assets—so the GPU can access it while producing images. NVIDIA’s 2023 explanation describes VRAM as high-speed memory on the graphics card; AMD’s VRAM overview also explains its role in storing graphics assets.
Capacity is only one part of a GPU’s capability. More VRAM does not automatically mean a faster GPU, better encoding, or smoother streams. The card also needs enough processing performance for the game and OBS’s rendering work.
How much VRAM do you need for OBS streaming?
OBS does not state a minimum VRAM capacity in its basic system requirements. Those requirements cover operating-system and graphics-API compatibility, and OBS cautions that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee successful streaming or recording. So there is no evidence-based, one-size-fits-all number to use as an OBS streaming threshold.

Streaming a camera or video source
For a stream built around a camera or other video capture, consider the GPU work involved in the capture resolution, scene layout, filters, transitions, and any other active graphics applications. A simple scene places different demands on the system than multiple scaled sources and effects. Choose a GPU that can render the intended scene smoothly; VRAM capacity is one factor, not a standalone pass-or-fail test.
Streaming a game from the same PC
When you game and stream on one computer, the game and OBS both need GPU resources. High resolutions, detailed textures, and demanding effects can increase graphics-memory use. OBS also renders and composites its scenes, so a game using most of the GPU can leave too little headroom for OBS even when the encoder is hardware-based.

AMD provides a workload-specific illustration, not a streaming recommendation: its Radeon RX 7700 XT product guidance lists 12 GB of video memory for a 1440p gaming target. Separately, AMD reports peak use of 11.7 GB on a 12 GB Radeon RX 6750 XT while running Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, maximum settings, and high ray tracing. That vendor test, published in 2023, describes one game and configuration; it is not a general VRAM requirement for games or streaming.
What a hardware encoder changes—and what it does not
Hardware encoding uses a dedicated component to encode video rather than relying on the CPU for that work. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync Video, subject to hardware and software compatibility. See the OBS hardware-encoding guide for supported options and conditions.

Encoding and scene rendering are different tasks. A hardware encoder can reduce the CPU’s encoding workload, but OBS still needs GPU resources to compose and render what will be sent to the encoder. It therefore does not eliminate the need for GPU headroom, nor does choosing NVENC, AMF, or Quick Sync determine how much VRAM your game and scene require.
Codec support and recommendations depend on the GPU generation and streaming platform. NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS guide, dated January 30, 2025, recommends H.264 NVENC for Twitch and suggests AV1 for YouTube on RTX 40-series GPUs, or HEVC otherwise. Treat those as dated, platform- and hardware-specific recommendations, and check current compatibility before choosing a codec.

How to choose a GPU for gaming and streaming
Compare the complete workload rather than shopping by VRAM capacity alone. Use these questions to narrow the choice:
- What will you play, and at what resolution and settings? Consider the game’s texture, ray-tracing, and other graphics demands at the settings you actually intend to use.
- Can the GPU render the workload? Assess graphics performance alongside memory capacity; extra VRAM cannot compensate for insufficient processing performance.
- How demanding is your OBS scene? Account for capture sources, filters, scaling, and other scene elements, as well as GPU-using apps running at the same time.
- Which encoder and codec are available? Check hardware and software compatibility for your GPU and the current requirements of the platform where you will stream.
- Is there headroom? Leave GPU capacity for the game, OBS rendering, and concurrent applications instead of planning for the GPU to be fully occupied by the game.
Use a manufacturer’s VRAM example only in context. For instance, AMD’s 12 GB RX 7700 XT guidance is for a 1440p gaming target; it should not be read as an OBS minimum or a promise that every 1440p stream needs 12 GB.

Diagnose GPU overload before buying more VRAM
If OBS performance suffers while a game runs, the bottleneck may be GPU workload rather than VRAM capacity alone. OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guide explains that OBS uses the GPU to render and composite scenes, and that an overloaded GPU can affect OBS. It recommends reducing GPU demand, including lowering game settings or frame rate.
- Reduce demanding game graphics settings or the game’s frame rate to free GPU capacity.
- Simplify OBS scenes or reduce the work done by sources and filters if the scene is complex.
- Close other applications that are using the GPU, then check whether OBS performance improves.
- If the issue persists, reassess the entire workload—GPU performance, VRAM, encoder compatibility, and scene complexity—rather than assuming that a higher VRAM figure alone will fix it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your question is about keeping a prerecorded YouTube channel live around the clock rather than streaming gameplay from your PC, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required, once per account.
