VMMQ means Virtual Machine Multiple Queues. It is a network-interface-card (NIC) feature that extends Receive Side Scaling (RSS) to virtual ports, helping distribute incoming virtual-machine network traffic across multiple queues and processors while offloading packet distribution to supported NIC hardware.

How VMMQ works

RSS spreads receive-side network processing across multiple processors or CPU cores instead of concentrating it on one. VMMQ extends RSS to virtual ports connected to a physical network port. When the NIC, driver, and system support the feature, the adapter can handle packet distribution for those virtual ports rather than leaving all of that work to the host.

Microsoft describes VMMQ as an NIC-side offload of the packet-distribution function performed by virtual RSS (vRSS) in Hyper-V synthetic networking. That describes the design, not a guaranteed performance result for every workload. Microsoft’s Windows Server 2019 explanation

Intel likewise describes VMMQ as enabling RSS for virtual ports attached to a physical port. Intel notes that RSS has no effect on a system with only one processing unit, so the number of available processors can matter to the feature’s usefulness. Intel Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide

Cable Matters USB C to 10Gb Ethernet Adapter, Low-Heat and Silent
  • 10GbE Performance & USB-C Requirements: Upgrade to fast wired networking with this USB C to 10Gb Ethernet adapter, supporting 10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100M auto-negotiation for broad compatibility. Great for NAS access, large backups, content workflows, and low-latency gaming. Note: 10GbE is the theoretical link rate; real-world Windows throughput is typically ~7Gbps depending on setup. For best results, use a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) USB-C port or higher.
  • Real-World macOS Speed: Compatible with Thunderbolt 3/4/5 and USB4 ports. On Macs, macOS may report a 5Gb link rate, while typical real-world throughput is ~5Gbps depending on the Mac model, network equipment, cabling, and test method. We continuously validate macOS performance and publish the latest notes and updates on our support page.
  • Stable Performance with Advanced Chipset: Powered by the Realtek RTL8159 USB 10G controller for efficient power use and minimal heat in typical operation. Designed to address the heat concerns common with some 10GbE adapters, this 10Gb Ethernet to USB C adapter delivers cool and reliable performance in a compact design.
  • Premium & Durable Design: Built to last with a rugged aluminum housing plus integrated thermal silicone and a heat sink to help dissipate heat and withstand daily wear, scuffs, and impacts. The braided USB-C pigtail cable adds strength and flexibility to help prevent fraying and reduce port strain—ideal for travel kits, mobile workstations, and tight dock setups.
  • Easy Setup & Wide Compatibility: Plug-and-play on the latest macOS and Windows. Some older OS releases may limit performance; if speed is reduced on Windows or certain Linux kernels, install the latest Realtek RTL8159 USB 10G driver (macOS typically needs no manual driver—keep macOS updated). Works with USB-C, USB4, and Thunderbolt 5/4/3 devices including MacBook, iMac, Dell XPS, Surface, iPad Pro, and more. Not for Android / Xbox One S.

What VMMQ can and cannot promise

VMMQ is intended to improve receive-processing scalability and reduce some host CPU work by moving packet distribution onto the NIC. Whether it improves performance depends on the adapter, driver, Windows configuration, available queues, processor resources, and workload. The cited documentation does not establish a universal throughput increase that applies to all systems.

Compare performance only with results that identify the tested NIC and firmware, driver, Windows release, workload, and test conditions. A capability statement or a result from one older technical article is not a general benchmark for your server.

TP-Link 10GB PCIe Network Card (TX401)-PCIe to 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
  • 10 Gbps PCIe Network Card: With the latest 10GBase-T Technology, TX401 delivers extreme speeds of up to 10 Gbps, which is 10× faster than typical Gigabit adapters, guaranteeing smooth data transmissions for both internet access and local data transmissions[1]
  • Versatile Compatibility: With extreme speed and ultra-low latency, 10GBase-T is backwards compatible with multiple data rates (10 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, 1 Gbps, 100 Mbps), automatically negotiating between higher and lower speed connections
  • QoS: Quality of Service technology delivers prioritized performance for gamers and ensures to avoid network congestion for PC gaming
  • Free CAT6A Ethernet Cable: To maximize TX401's performance, a 1.5 m CAT6A Ethernet Cable is included—rated for up to 10 Gbps while a regular cable is only rated for 1 Gbps
  • Low-Profile and Full-Height Brackets: In addition to the standard bracket, a low-profile bracket is provided for mini tower computer cases

Compatibility depends on the NIC and its configuration

VMMQ is not a universal Windows switch that works identically on every server adapter. Confirm support in the documentation for the exact NIC, driver, firmware, server platform, and Windows Server version you use.

  • NVIDIA WinOF-2: NVIDIA documents support for Windows Server 2016 and later in Ethernet mode, not IP over InfiniBand (IPoIB), for the ConnectX-4, ConnectX-4 Lx, and ConnectX-5 families. These are requirements in NVIDIA’s WinOF-2 documentation, not a general compatibility list for other vendors. NVIDIA WinOF-2 virtualization documentation
  • Cisco UCS VIC 1400: Cisco’s guidance says VMMQ is not enabled by default for Windows Server 2016 in its documented configuration, while its Windows Server 2019 setup supports it by default. Cisco also describes configuration through UCS Manager or IMC policies. These defaults and steps apply to Cisco’s documented UCS setup, not to Windows Server generally. When evaluating or configuring a system, check whether it uses Ethernet or another network mode, how many virtual ports share the adapter, what queue resources are available, and whether teaming, virtual-switch settings, or vendor policies affect the feature.

Enabling VMMQ on a Hyper-V adapter

Commands and prerequisites vary by NIC and driver. In NVIDIA’s WinOF-2 guidance, vRSS must be enabled before VMMQ. For a Hyper-V virtual network adapter, NVIDIA documents this PowerShell command:

Set-VMNetworkAdapter -Name "Virtual Adapter Name" -VmmqEnabled $true

Replace Virtual Adapter Name with the adapter’s actual name. NVIDIA also documents -VmmqQueuePairs <number> for requesting a number of queue pairs per virtual port. A request is not a guarantee: the operating system may grant fewer queue pairs because of resource availability or other factors. Follow the instructions for your exact adapter and driver rather than applying a vendor-specific command as a universal procedure. NVIDIA WinOF-2 virtualization documentation

What to verify when troubleshooting or comparing systems

  • Confirm that the exact NIC model, driver, and firmware support VMMQ.
  • Check the Windows Server release and the vendor’s guidance on whether VMMQ is enabled by default.
  • Verify the network mode; NVIDIA’s cited support statement applies to Ethernet, not IPoIB.
  • Check whether vRSS is enabled when required by the adapter vendor.
  • Review available queue resources, virtual-port count, adapter teaming, virtual-switch configuration, and any vendor-specific multi-queue policies.
  • If performance is the concern, measure the actual workload and CPU use on the target system; do not assume that enabling VMMQ guarantees higher throughput.
