Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVisual search lets you search with an image, camera view, or selected part of your screen instead of relying only on typed keywords. Point a phone at a plant, upload a photo of a jacket, select text in a screenshot, or crop one object from a webpage, and a visual-search system analyzes what it sees.
Results can include an identification, translation, product information, visually similar images, recipes, places, or related web content. Google Lens, Pinterest Lens, and Microsoft Bing Visual Search are examples. Website owners can improve image discovery with clear image markup, descriptive filenames and alt text, relevant surrounding content, crawlable URLs, and suitable structured data.
What is visual search?
Visual search is a search method that uses visual input—such as a photograph, uploaded file, live camera view, or selected screen area—as the query. Image-recognition and computer-vision systems examine the input, identify objects or text, compare visual features with indexed content, and return relevant results.
It is broader than traditional reverse-image search. A reverse-image tool primarily looks for copies or related versions of an existing image. Visual search can interpret what an image contains even when the exact image has never appeared online.

For example, Google Lens can:
- Copy and translate text in an image.
- Identify plants, animals, places, menus, products, and other objects.
- Find visually similar images and related web content.
- Return product information or shopping results for items such as jeans and sneakers.
- Compare possible interpretations and rank likely matches.
Lens compares objects with other images, ranks results by similarity and relevance, and can use words, language, and metadata from the page hosting an image. The same photograph may produce different results depending on the crop, accompanying text, or selected object.
How visual search works
- Capture or provide an image. Take a photograph, upload a file, paste an image, or select a region of a webpage.
- Detect visual elements. The system examines objects, text, colors, shapes, and other features. It may recognize several objects in one image.
- Interpret the query. Computer-vision models estimate what the image contains, such as a shoe, a dog, a street sign, or an ingredient.
- Compare against indexed information. The service matches visual signals against images, products, entities, pages, and other information in its index.
- Rank and refine the results. Results are ranked by similarity and relevance. Cropping, object selection, suggested words, or a typed follow-up can narrow the search.
The system makes an estimate, not a proven identification. A blurry photo, unusual object, poor lighting, or misleading background can produce an incorrect answer. Treat results involving health, poisonous plants, expensive purchases, or safety decisions as leads that require verification.

Google Lens in Chrome on a desktop
Chrome provides several ways to search visible webpage content with Lens. Google must be your default search engine for the documented workflow.
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Select More (the three-dot menu) at the top right.
- Select Search this tab with Google Lens.
- Alternatively, right-click the page and select Search this tab with Google Lens.
- Select an area of the page or an image. Results appear in Chrome’s side panel.
To search one image directly, right-click it and choose Search with Google Lens. Chrome also offers Search with Google Lens when you right-click outside an image, allowing you to select part of the page. Select a result to open it in a new tab. You can pin the Lens command to the toolbar.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Close the side panel by selecting elsewhere on the live page, pressing Esc, or selecting Close in the panel.
Google Lens history and privacy
Visual Search History is an optional setting that is off by default. When enabled, images used with eligible Google services can be saved to Web & App Activity.
To review the setting, use this path:
Google Account → Data & privacy → Web & App Activity → Manage all Web & App Activity
Eligible sources listed by Google include Lens in the Google app on Android, iPhone, and iPad; the Lens app; Android’s Quick Search Box and All Apps Tray; and Circle to Search on Android. Availability can vary by account type, locale, app, and device version.

Pinterest Lens
On the Pinterest website, sign in, select the Lens icon in the search bar, upload an image, and select the upload/search control. Pinterest also lets you choose previously uploaded images.
In the mobile app, sign in and tap the camera icon in the search bar. Tap the shutter button to take a photograph or choose a photo from your camera roll. Pinterest may request camera and photo permissions.
For a clearer live capture, hold the phone steady. If the scene is dark, tap the lightning-bolt icon in the upper-right corner to enable the flash.

Pinterest also supports object-level search inside a Pin. Open a Pin in closeup and tap the image, tap the magnifying-glass-and-sparkle icon, or press and hold the Pin and drag until that icon is selected. Searchable or shoppable objects may glow. Tap an object, pinch to zoom, or adjust the cropper corners. Suggested keywords can further refine results.
Pinterest says visual-search features work in its Android and iOS apps but are not available on ads or collage Pins.
Benefits of visual search
It works when you do not know the right words
Describing a chair, clothing style, plant, building, or cable connector in text can be difficult. A photograph supplies details that may be hard to name, allowing the system to suggest the vocabulary you need.
It makes shopping faster
A photo of shoes or furniture can lead to matching products, similar designs, retailers, and—where available—product information such as user ratings. This is useful when a product has no visible model number or when you want a similar alternative.

It handles text in the real world
Lens can copy or translate text from a sign, document, label, menu, or screenshot, which can be faster than manually retyping it.
It supports discovery and learning
Visual search can identify a place, suggest recipes from ingredients, recognize an animal, or show related content. Pinterest describes finding recipes from photographed ingredients and products based on street-style images.
It improves accessibility and convenience
People who have difficulty typing, spelling an unfamiliar term, or recognizing an object can use a camera or image as the starting point. Visual input can also be convenient on mobile devices when typing a detailed description is cumbersome.
How to get better visual-search results
- Crop to the important object. Remove unrelated people, backgrounds, labels, and neighboring products. A crop of one sneaker can be more precise than a full outfit photograph.
- Use a sharp, well-lit image. Clear focus and sufficient light help recognition. Avoid reflections, motion blur, and extreme shadows.
- Capture useful identifying details. Include logos, model numbers, distinctive stitching, leaf shapes, or the entire sign when those details matter.
- Try more than one crop. Search the whole image first, then search a specific object or detail. Different crops can prompt different interpretations.
- Add words after the image search. Add a term such as “manual,” “replacement,” “price,” “winter,” or a location to turn a broad visual match into a more specific query.
- Check multiple results. Similar appearance does not guarantee an identical material, model, species, or place. Compare product details and consult an authoritative source.
- Choose a service for your task. Lens can help with identification and text; Pinterest is useful for visual discovery; developers can use Bing Visual Search API for application features.
Visual-search optimization for websites
No single tag guarantees visual-search visibility. Search engines can use computer vision alongside filenames, alt text, page content, captions, image titles, placement, links, and technical accessibility to understand images.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Embed important images with a standard <img> element. Google can discover images in an image element’s src, including an image inside picture, but does not index CSS background images. For example, use an image element with a descriptive alt attribute.
Provide responsive-image fallbacks
Use srcset or picture for responsive delivery, but retain a normal fallback src URL. Google recommends a fallback because some browsers and crawlers may not fully understand responsive attributes.
Write descriptive filenames and alt text
my-new-black-kitten.jpg gives more context than IMG00023.JPG. Keep filenames short and accurate, and match the extension to the actual file type.
Alt text should describe the image in its page context. For example, “Blue ceramic travel mug with a leakproof lid” is more useful than “image1.jpg” or a string of repeated mug-related keywords.

Google uses alt text alongside computer vision and page content. Repeating keywords is not an optimization shortcut; Google warns that keyword-stuffed alt text harms user experience and may make a page look spammy.
Place images beside relevant content
Put an image near an accurate heading, paragraph, caption, and—where useful—an image title. A product photograph on a page that describes its model, dimensions, material, and use gives search engines more context than the same photograph on an unrelated page.
Make image URLs discoverable
Important pages should be accessible without a login. Do not block pages or images with robots.txt, a robots meta tag, or noindex. Check that Googlebot can reach both the page and the image URL.
An image sitemap is useful when image URLs might otherwise go undiscovered. It can include image URLs hosted on another domain, such as a CDN.
Use suitable formats and representative images
Google Search supports images referenced through an image src in BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF formats. Use a filename extension that matches the actual file type.
For a page’s representative image, Google recommends a relevant, high-resolution image. Avoid a generic logo, an image dominated by text, or an extreme aspect ratio as the primary image.
Add image references and structured data where appropriate
For social sharing and page representation, provide a relevant image reference such as og:image. Where a supported structured-data type applies, include its required image property. Structured data can make an image eligible for certain rich results or badges, but does not guarantee them.
Google’s documented workflow is to add required properties, follow the relevant guidelines, validate with the Rich Results Test, test sample pages with URL Inspection, deploy, request recrawling if appropriate, and submit or update a sitemap. Discovery and crawling can take several days.

If you publish licensed photography, Google supports licensing information through structured data or IPTC photo metadata. Structured data must be added on every page instance where the image appears; IPTC metadata only needs to be embedded in the image once. If the two methods conflict, Google uses the structured-data information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For developers: Bing Visual Search API
Microsoft’s Bing Visual Search API v7 accepts an image and can return visually similar images, shopping sources, recognized text, entities, and related topical content. Its documented endpoint is POST https://api.bing.microsoft.com/v7.0/images/visualsearch, and the request must use HTTPS.
The endpoint documentation states that the maximum URL length is 2,048 characters and recommends keeping query parameters below 1,500 characters; exceeding the URL limit returns 404 Not found. The documentation is marked July 15, 2020 and warns that URL formats and parameters may change, so applications should not depend on undocumented URL behavior.
Common visual-search mistakes
| Mistake | What happens | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Searching a cluttered photo | The service may choose the wrong object or return broad matches. | Crop tightly around one subject. |
| Trusting the first identification | A similar-looking species, product, or place may be accepted as fact. | Compare several results and verify with a reliable source. |
| Using a CSS background image for important content | Users see it, but Google may not index it. | Use an HTML image element. |
| Stuffing alt text with keywords | The text is less useful to people and may look spammy. | Describe the image naturally and specifically. |
| Blocking image URLs | Crawlers may not discover or validate the image. | Review robots rules, noindex directives, login requirements, and hosting access. |
| Assuming history controls Lens | Turning off Visual Search History is mistaken for disabling Lens. | Remember that the setting controls saving activity, not Lens availability. |
FAQ
Is visual search the same as reverse-image search?
No. Reverse-image search looks for copies or related versions of an existing image. Visual search can also identify objects, read and translate text, find products, suggest recipes, recognize places, and search for an object within a larger image.
How do I use Google Lens in Chrome?
In Chrome, open a page, select More → Search this tab with Google Lens, or right-click the page and select Search this tab with Google Lens. To search one image, right-click it and choose Search with Google Lens. Google must be Chrome’s default search engine for the documented workflow.
Does turning off Google Visual Search History disable Google Lens?
No. Turning off Visual Search History stops eligible images from being saved to Web & App Activity, but it does not disable Lens, turn off Web & App Activity generally, or automatically remove images already saved.
Why is Google not finding an image on my website?
Check that the image is referenced by an HTML image element, has a reachable URL, and is not blocked by robots.txt, a robots meta tag, noindex, a login requirement, or inaccessible hosting. Descriptive filenames, useful alt text, relevant surrounding content, and a sitemap when necessary can also help discovery.
Can visual search identify a product exactly?
Sometimes, but not reliably in every case. It may find the same product, similar products, shopping sources, or a likely category. Verify the model and product details before buying.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Pinterest says visual-search features are not available on ads or collage Pins. On mobile, check that the app has the required camera or photo permission and that the image is clear enough to analyze.
The Bottom Line
Visual search turns an image, camera view, or screen selection into a search query. Google Lens can help with identification, text, translation, products, and places; Pinterest Lens focuses on visual discovery and shopping ideas; and Bing Visual Search provides an API for applications.
For better results, use a clear image, crop to the relevant object, refine the result with words, and verify important answers. For website owners, use HTML image elements, descriptive filenames and contextual alt text, responsive-image fallbacks, accessible URLs, and structured data only when it accurately describes the page.
