Visible light communication (VLC) sends data by varying visible light and receiving those variations with an optical detector. In a common setup, an LED carries a rapidly changing signal while providing illumination; a photodetector converts the received light changes into an electrical signal that can be decoded.
How visible light communication works
A basic VLC link has a transmitter, a path the light travels, and a receiver. The transmitter’s electronics encode information by changing the LED’s light output—typically by varying its drive current. A photodetector at the receiving end senses the changes, and signal-processing electronics recover the data. The modulation is designed to be too fast or subtle for people to notice as flicker during ordinary use. IEEE describes VLC as communication using visible light, approximately 380–700 nm; a 2019 IEEE survey gives an approximate range of 380–750 nm. The three parts of a link
- Optical source and transmitter: commonly an LED and electronics that encode information in its emitted light.
- Light channel: the room or other environment between the source and receiver.
- Receiver: usually a photodetector and electronics that turn light variations into decoded data.
VLC, optical wireless communication, and Li-Fi
These terms overlap, but they are not interchangeable in every technical or standards context.
- VLC refers to communication carried by visible light.
- Optical wireless communication (OWC) is the broader category, covering wireless optical links in visible and non-visible bands.
- Li-Fi commonly describes networked, bidirectional optical wireless access related to VLC. Its scope can include near-infrared, so it should not be defined as visible-light-only in every context.
The standards distinction matters: IEEE associates short-range VLC physical- and MAC-layer standardization with IEEE 802.15.7. Its Li-Fi overview describes IEEE 802.11bb-2023 as an 802.11-family light-communications amendment using 800–1000 nm near-infrared—not the visible band. IEEE Technology Navigator: Light fidelity.

Where VLC is used or studied
IEEE identifies indoor networking and combined lighting-and-data systems, vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure signaling, and underwater optical communication as application areas. These are areas of use and research; the cited overviews do not establish that every scenario is widely deployed commercially. What affects a VLC connection
Light’s path and the receiver’s ability to see it shape the link. A direct line of sight is often important, and an opaque object can block the signal. Reflections may create extra paths, contributing to multipath dispersion. Sunlight and other lamps can also add noise at the receiver. The source’s radiation pattern and the receiver’s field of view affect which paths work.

These constraints can make coverage more localized than radio-based networking: a user moving out of the optical path may lose the link. Confining light to an area can also support spatial reuse, but it does not make VLC a universal replacement for radio networking. Performance depends on the specific source, receiver, channel, and application.

VLC describes the transmission method, not a promise that any LED lamp provides internet access. A working system needs a compatible optical transmitter and receiver, as well as the electronics and networking needed to encode, decode, and route data. In educational experiments, an LED transmitter and photodetector receiver are useful component concepts; that does not establish that a particular electronics kit is compatible or ready to provide network access.
