Ultra HD Blu-ray is a physical disc format for playing Ultra HD video and audio at home. It supports video up to 3840 × 2160 pixels—commonly marketed as 4K UHD—along with HDR and immersive audio. It is distinct from both a 4K television and streamed 4K video: you need a compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray player and a UHD Blu-ray disc to play it.
What does Ultra HD Blu-ray mean?
Ultra HD Blu-ray, also called UHD Blu-ray, is the Blu-ray Disc Association’s optical-disc format for Ultra High Definition entertainment. The format specifies how compatible discs store video and audio and how compatible players reproduce them. The Association announced the Ultra HD format in 2014; its About Us page describes its role in developing Blu-ray Disc specifications.
“4K UHD” is common marketing language for UHD content. In this format, 4K refers to the maximum supported pixel dimensions, not a guarantee about how a particular film was captured or mastered.
What does the format support?
| Feature | Ultra HD Blu-ray capability |
|---|---|
| Maximum resolution | 3840 × 2160 pixels, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association FAQ |
| Full HD comparison | 1920 × 1080 pixels, according to the Association’s Ultra HD definition |
| HDR and color | HDR and wider color support. The Association says the format can cover over 75% of the visible color spectrum; this is its format claim, not a guarantee that every disc or television reproduces that range. |
| Progressive frame rates | 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames per second |
| Disc capacity | 66 GB on dual-layer discs and 100 GB on triple-layer discs |
| Maximum video rates | 108 Mbps for 66 GB discs and 128 Mbps for 100 GB discs |
| Audio | Up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed audio and object-based formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X |
The capacities, frame rates, maximum video rates, color claim and compatibility details are listed by the Association in its Ultra HD Benefits material. These are format capabilities: they do not mean every title uses every maximum feature.

How is UHD Blu-ray different from regular Blu-ray?
The clearest difference is resolution: the UHD format supports up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, while Full HD is 1920 × 1080 pixels. UHD Blu-ray also specifies HDR, wider color, additional progressive frame rates, larger disc capacities and support for immersive audio. The Blu-ray Disc Association’s FAQ and Ultra HD Benefits describe these capabilities.
A format’s maximum resolution does not establish that every UHD release was made from a native 4K master. Nor does the specification alone establish how much better a particular disc will look or sound than a standard Blu-ray or a stream; that depends on the specific release and playback equipment.

What do you need to watch an Ultra HD Blu-ray?
- A UHD Blu-ray disc: the physical media must be authored in the Ultra HD Blu-ray format.
- A compatible player: a regular Blu-ray player is not enough unless it explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. The Association says UHD players also play current Blu-ray Disc content.
- A suitable display for the intended output: to view UHD resolution, connect the player to a UHD-capable television. The Association says a UHD player can also output standard HD to an HDTV, including down-conversion and HDR-to-SDR conversion to suit the connected television’s capabilities.
Actual playback options and output can vary by player and display. Format support does not make every model’s features identical.
Is Ultra HD Blu-ray the same as a 4K TV or 4K streaming?
No. A 4K TV is a display; Ultra HD Blu-ray is a disc and playback format. Streaming 4K is video delivered over an internet connection, not an optical disc. The shared “4K” label refers to resolution, but it does not make those products or delivery methods interchangeable.

In its 2015 announcement, the Association said the Ultra HD Blu-ray specification was complete and licensing was scheduled to begin that summer. The Association’s specification release identifies “Blu-ray Disc” and “Ultra HD Blu-ray” as trademarks licensed for use with products using its optical-disc format.
