Turso is a Rust-based relational SQL database that runs inside your application rather than as a separate database server. Its primary SQL frontend targets SQLite compatibility, so it can work with existing SQLite database files, but the project documents compatibility gaps. You can embed the engine, use Turso Cloud for managed hosting, or pair a cloud database with a local copy through embedded replication.
What “in-process” means
With an in-process database, the SQL engine runs in the same process and memory space as the application using it. A local query does not need to travel over a network protocol to a separate database server. That is different from connecting to a database hosted remotely, even when that server is otherwise nearby.
The Turso Database Manual describes Turso as an in-process relational database engine aiming for SQLite compatibility. Its manual characterizes local query latency as potentially sub-microsecond in the best case; that is not a general benchmark or a guarantee of end-to-end application performance.
How Turso relates to SQLite and libSQL
Turso Database is a ground-up rewrite in Rust, while libSQL is a fork of SQLite. They are related projects, but not the same database. The project says libSQL has been battle-tested longer and that development effort is focused on Turso Database. Turso compiles SQL into bytecode for a virtual database engine (VDBE), with SQLite as its first and primary SQL frontend.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Turso targets SQLite compatibility across SQL dialect, database file format, and C API, and the project says existing SQLite database files work as-is. It also explicitly acknowledges that compatibility is not yet complete. Check the compatibility documentation for known differences before replacing SQLite in an application; do not assume every SQLite feature or behavior is identical.
Ways to use Turso
| Approach | Where the database runs | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded engine | In the application’s process | Local SQL execution avoids a network round trip to a separate database server. Your application owns its embedded deployment. |
| Turso Cloud | As a managed hosted service | Useful when you want hosted database operations rather than running only an embedded database. Cloud hosting is distinct from embedding the engine. |
| Embedded replication | A cloud database and a local on-device copy | Supports a local-first design with synchronization. The product describes offline reads and periodic sync; offline writes are labeled beta. |
These are different deployment paths, not interchangeable names for one setup. The Turso product overview describes the engine, managed hosting, and embedded replication. Its local-first page distinguishes offline reads and periodic synchronization from offline writes, which it labels beta.

Transactions, concurrency, and write conflicts
Turso documents three transaction modes. The mode matters because it affects when a transaction starts and how concurrent writes are handled.
- Deferred: The default mode. A read or write transaction begins when its first SQL statement runs, rather than immediately at
BEGIN. - Immediate: Acquires a reserved write lock at
BEGIN. - Concurrent: An MVCC mode that allows multiple transactions to read and write using snapshot isolation, then checks for conflicts at commit.
In concurrent mode, if another transaction modifies a row in conflict with a transaction being committed, the write can fail with SQLITE_BUSY. Applications using this mode should handle retries and test behavior under their expected contention. The documented semantics do not mean that writes never block or that concurrent writing is unlimited.

What happens under the hood
The manual describes an MVCC index, page cache, write-ahead log (WAL), and SQLite database files. Reads check the MVCC index and may then load data from the cache, WAL, or database file. On commit, transaction data is flushed through the page cache to the WAL. These implementation details explain the broad design, but they do not by themselves establish a particular application’s durability or performance results.

The project README lists support for Go, JavaScript, Java, .NET, Python, Rust, and WebAssembly, and lists Linux, macOS, Windows, and browser support through WebAssembly. The manual documents JavaScript native and WebAssembly package installation and describes the C API as a subset. Support and feature coverage can vary by binding, so check the documentation for the exact runtime and package you intend to use.

The project also describes native vector operations and search, change data capture, and asynchronous Linux I/O using io_uring. Vector indexing is on the roadmap, and some features have experimental status; vector search or manipulation should not be mistaken for vector indexing. The repository labels the Postgres frontend experimental, so do not treat it as equivalent in maturity to the primary SQLite frontend. Check current project documentation for feature status before relying on these capabilities.

When Turso may fit—and when to check further
- Consider the embedded engine when your application benefits from local SQL execution and SQLite-oriented workflows, and you can validate the compatibility gaps that matter to your schema and queries.
- Consider managed hosting when you need a hosted database rather than an engine running solely in your application. Cloud service details and operational terms should be checked in the current product documentation.
- Consider embedded replication for an architecture that needs a local database copy alongside a cloud database. Treat offline writes as beta according to the product page, and verify whether that maturity level suits your use case.
- Test concurrency explicitly if transactions may write overlapping rows. Select the transaction mode intentionally and build retry handling for applicable conflicts.
- Verify version-specific support for the language binding, platform, compatibility details, and any beta or experimental feature you plan to ship.
