TSMC, or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, is a semiconductor foundry: it manufactures chips designed by other companies. Taiwan matters because it is home to most of TSMC’s manufacturing footprint and a concentrated share of advanced chipmaking. That concentration makes Taiwan important to global technology supply chains—and leaves customers exposed to disruption risks.
What is TSMC?
TSMC is a contract manufacturer for semiconductors. In the foundry model, a customer designs a chip and TSMC manufactures it. The company describes itself as a pure-play foundry: it says it does not design, manufacture, or market semiconductor products under its own name. That makes TSMC different from a consumer-chip brand selling finished products directly to shoppers.
TSMC is an upstream supplier. Its customers’ chips can end up in products and services across several major markets, including high-performance computing, smartphones, the Internet of Things (IoT), automotive, and digital consumer electronics. TSMC’s 2024 Annual Report says foundry demand is closely tied to the health of these markets; that is the company’s description of its business, not an independent forecast.
Why does Taiwan matter to the global chip supply?
Taiwan is the center of TSMC’s manufacturing footprint and has a dense semiconductor ecosystem. TSMC’s 2025 report lists several large fab operations in Taiwan, alongside facilities or subsidiaries in Arizona, Nanjing, and Japan. Taiwan’s role also extends beyond wafer fabrication: the Congressional Research Service describes its semiconductor participation across design, fabrication, materials, and assembly, packaging, and testing.

- 5 x 5 inches, 0.67 ounces, 0.03 inches thick. Some wafers are marked with alignment marks.
- The pattern is produced by light diffraction, and its reflective appearance changes with the viewing angle.
- Silicon wafers are fragile—please handle with care.
- Circuit details can be examined under a microscope.
This concentration matters because chips pass through interconnected stages and suppliers. A disruption affecting Taiwan’s manufacturing ecosystem could therefore reach customers and downstream industries that depend on its output. The concern is about exposure to disruption—not a prediction that a particular event will occur.
What do the figures say about Taiwan’s position?
Different estimates describe different parts of the semiconductor industry. They should not be treated as interchangeable: foundry revenue is not the same measure as manufacturing capacity for a particular chip technology.

| Measure | Figure and date | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Foundry revenue and leading-edge manufacturing | Over 60% of global foundry revenue and more than 90% of leading-edge chip manufacturing; estimates reported in the International Trade Administration’s 2025 Taiwan country guide. | Guide-level estimates about Taiwan. They are not TSMC’s own market share and use different measures from the capacity figures below. |
| Sub-10nm fabrication capacity | Taiwan: 69%; South Korea: 31%; capacity in 2022, as reported by the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission in its 2025 report. | Capacity capable of producing chips below 10nm in 2022—not all global semiconductor output, chip sales, or a current 2026 share. |
| TSMC annual manufacturing capacity | More than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers in 2025, according to TSMC. | Company-reported annual capacity across facilities managed by TSMC and its subsidiaries. It is not worldwide market share or a count of completed shipments. |
The figures answer different questions. The 2022 sub-10nm statistic describes a technology-specific capacity measure, while the country guide’s estimates concern foundry revenue and leading-edge manufacturing. Neither should be used as a proxy for Taiwan’s share of every kind of chip.
What could a disruption in Taiwan mean?
Companies that rely on chips made in Taiwan could face supply problems if the region’s semiconductor ecosystem were disrupted. The effects would depend on which facilities, suppliers, transport routes, or supply-chain stages were affected, as well as how much inventory and alternative capacity customers could access. The Congressional Research Service discusses possible disruption from trade, geopolitical, and other risks; it does not establish that any particular crisis or interruption will happen.

This is a concentration risk, not evidence that one company or one fab represents the entire global supply chain. Taiwan’s involvement in materials, design, packaging, and testing adds further connections beyond fabrication alone.

TSMC is expanding its footprint internationally while continuing to invest in Taiwan. Its 2025 report says Arizona’s first facility began 4nm volume production in the fourth quarter of 2024, and Japan’s first Kumamoto fab began volume production at the end of 2024. These are operating milestones, not simply announcements.

The same report also describes projects that are planned or under construction. Those plans should not be counted as current production: a facility’s location, ownership, construction status, and actual volume output are separate facts. Overseas expansion broadens the footprint, but it does not by itself show that Taiwan’s role or the concentration of advanced capacity has already changed.

How to read claims about chip concentration
- Check the segment: advanced logic, mature chips, and other semiconductor categories are not interchangeable.
- Check the metric: foundry revenue, wafer capacity, output, and a share of a specific technology capability measure different things.
- Check the geography: a fab’s location is not necessarily the same as the company that operates it, and Taiwan’s national ecosystem is broader than TSMC.
- Check the date and status: distinguish a dated estimate from a current figure, and volume production from construction or an announced plan.
