Windows 11 requires a compatible TPM 2.0 because it provides a hardware root of trust for security features such as BitLocker, Windows Hello, and System Guard. It may be built into your PC’s firmware or integrated hardware—you do not necessarily need to buy a separate chip.
What TPM 2.0 is
TPM stands for Trusted Platform Module. It is a security processor that can generate and protect cryptographic keys and record measurements of security-relevant software and configuration as a computer starts. Those measurements help Windows assess whether the boot process followed an expected path.
TPM 2.0 is a version of the TPM specification, not a promise that your PC has a visible, removable module. It defines capabilities that the system and software can use to protect keys and support checks of platform integrity.
Why Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0
Microsoft says Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 by default to make enhanced security easier to enable and to provide a hardware root of trust for current and future protections. TPM capabilities support security features including BitLocker, Windows Hello, measured boot, and System Guard. Which features require a TPM, and which can use one without requiring it in every configuration, varies by feature.

Version 2.0 also offers greater cryptographic algorithm flexibility than TPM 1.2. Microsoft’s comparison says TPM 1.2 supports RSA and SHA-1, while TPM 2.0 supports a broader range of algorithms. Microsoft also cites TPM 2.0’s Windows-configured lockout policy as a way to provide a more consistent guarantee against dictionary attacks. The reason to require 2.0 is not that it is simply a faster chip; it better aligns with Windows’ security capabilities and policies.
TPM 2.0 is only one Windows 11 minimum requirement. A compatible TPM by itself does not establish that a PC meets the operating system’s other hardware and compatibility requirements. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements for the full list.

What the TPM does for Windows security
Protecting keys and encrypted data
BitLocker encrypts a drive volume and can use TPM-protected keys alongside firmware and startup measurements. When the device starts in an expected state, the TPM can make the key available so the encrypted drive can be used. If the boot path changes unexpectedly, the measurements may differ and the TPM can withhold use of the key. This helps protect data at rest, including if someone tries to access the drive outside its usual Windows startup process.
That protection is not a guarantee against every attack, and it does not replace a strong account password, other account protections, or backups. Before making firmware or encryption changes, make sure you have the recovery information needed to regain access to your data.

Supporting sign-in and boot-integrity features
Windows Hello can use TPM capabilities to protect sign-in keys and credentials. Measured boot records information about the startup process, while System Guard uses platform-integrity protections; TPM capabilities contribute to these mechanisms. Attestation can also provide information about a device’s security state to a service or organization that checks it.
Does TPM 2.0 have to be a separate chip?
No. Microsoft describes three implementation types: a discrete TPM chip, an integrated TPM, and a firmware TPM operating in a trusted execution environment. Windows uses any compatible implementation in the same way and does not favor one form. A firmware TPM may be available even when there is no separate chip to see inside the computer.

Many Windows 11 PCs have TPM 2.0 built in. If Windows reports that it is missing, check whether it is disabled in firmware before assuming the hardware is absent.

- In Windows, open Windows Security.
- Go to Device security.
- Select Security processor details to inspect the TPM status and version.
- If no TPM is shown or it appears unavailable, consult your PC manufacturer’s documentation to find out whether the system supports TPM 2.0 and how its firmware setting is named.
Firmware labels differ. Depending on the system, the setting may be called TPM, Intel PTT, or AMD fTPM. Follow instructions for your exact PC or motherboard model rather than relying on a universal menu path.

What to do if TPM 2.0 is missing or disabled
Check for a disabled firmware TPM first
If the PC supports TPM 2.0, its firmware TPM may simply be turned off. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for entering firmware settings and enabling the appropriate TPM option. Avoid clearing the TPM or changing unrelated security settings casually: those actions can affect access to protected keys or encrypted data.
Check the boot mode before changing it
Microsoft states that TPM 2.0 is not supported in Legacy/CSM BIOS mode and requires Native UEFI mode. Switching an existing installation from Legacy to UEFI without preparing the disk can stop Windows from booting. Follow the PC maker’s procedure and understand the disk configuration before changing boot mode; do not treat the UEFI setting as a safe toggle.
Consider a discrete module only if the system supports it
A separate TPM 2.0 module may be an option for some desktop systems, but the motherboard must support the exact module and connector. Modules are not universally interchangeable. Confirm compatibility with the motherboard manufacturer before purchasing; most users should check status and firmware documentation first.
