The company planned demonstrations and technical sessions at tinyML Summit from March 28–30, 2022. The announcement describes a development kit, not a consumer AI product, and its Summit appearance is a past event. Synaptics’ launch announcement has the original details.
What is the Synaptics Katana Edge AI Kit?
The Katana Edge AI evaluation kit (EVK) is a hardware-and-software platform intended to help developers prototype edge AI applications. It is based on Synaptics’ low-power Katana system-on-chip (SoC) platform, which the company said includes a neural-network engine for inference on the device.
Synaptics positioned the kit for IoT product development in areas such as smart homes, buildings, industry, and monitoring. Its stated focus was combining data from vision, motion, and sound sensors, rather than relying on a single type of input. The announcement describes intended capabilities and use cases; it does not provide independent performance measurements.
What does the Katana EVK include?
The March 2022 announcement listed these kit components:

What can developers build with the Katana kit?
Synaptics named smart-home, building, industrial, and monitoring applications as potential areas for the EVK. Its examples included reading an instrument meter display and detecting or counting people. At the Summit, the company also discussed sound-event detection, keyword spotting, speech processing, and occupancy-related counting. These are vendor-described demonstrations and application ideas, not claims of independently validated performance. The Summit announcement gives further context on those demonstrations and the broader showcase.

In a September 2022 announcement about Edge Impulse Studio, Synaptics also listed possible applications including object and pattern recognition, fall detection, asset or inventory tracking, digital meter reading, and environmental sensing. That announcement describes the examples in connection with custom model development.
How do developers train custom models for Katana?
Synaptics announced an Edge Impulse partnership in September 2021 to support creating, training, and deploying custom models for edge applications. In September 2022, it announced that the Katana EVK was available within Edge Impulse Studio, a web-based development environment. Synaptics said developers could use their own application datasets to train and optimize models for Katana, then deploy them for voice, vision, sound, and other sensor inputs.
