The S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 are stock-market indexes, but they select companies using different rules. The S&P 500 is designed to represent large-cap U.S. equities. The Nasdaq-100 selects large domestic and international non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. That makes the Nasdaq-100 narrower by both exchange listing and sector eligibility—not simply a list of the 100 largest U.S. companies or a technology-only index.
What is the S&P 500?
The S&P 500 is a benchmark intended to represent the large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes it as comprising 500 leading companies and covering approximately 80% of available market capitalization. That 80% is a description of the index’s broad scope, not a fixed live share on every date. S&P Dow Jones Indices’ S&P 500 page reported 503 constituent securities as of August 31, 2026.
The difference between 500 companies and 503 securities reflects, among other things, that a company can have more than one eligible share class represented. So “500 stocks” is common shorthand, but it is not always the precise security count. The index is widely used as a gauge of large U.S. companies, but it does not include every U.S. publicly traded company or every market segment.
What is the Nasdaq-100?
The Nasdaq-100 tracks 100 of the largest domestic and international non-financial companies listed on The Nasdaq Stock Market, selected by market capitalization under the index’s rules. Nasdaq’s index overview describes that scope, while its methodology effective May 1, 2026 sets out the applicable rules as of that date.

Nasdaq listing is essential to eligibility, and financial companies are excluded. The index therefore is not a general ranking of the biggest companies across all U.S. exchanges. Nor is it simply a technology index: technology companies are prominent, but the index can include eligible companies from other industry groups.
S&P 500 vs. Nasdaq-100: the main differences
| Feature | S&P 500 | Nasdaq-100 |
|---|---|---|
| What it represents | Large-cap segment of the U.S. equity market | Large domestic and international non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq |
| Main eligibility lens | Large-cap U.S. companies that meet the index’s rules | Nasdaq listing and non-financial status, with selection based on size and index rules |
| Weighting | Float-adjusted market capitalization | Modified market capitalization |
| What the scope suggests | Broad exposure to large U.S. companies, while still concentrated in its largest constituents | Narrower exposure shaped by listing venue and sector exclusions; not equivalent to all technology stocks |
| How investors get exposure | Through a fund or another index-linked product, not by purchasing the index calculation itself | Through a fund or another index-linked product, not by purchasing the index calculation itself |
Both indexes give larger eligible companies more influence, but their weighting systems are not identical. A float-adjusted market-cap approach accounts for shares considered available to public investors; the Nasdaq-100 uses a modified market-cap methodology. The providers’ rules can therefore produce different weights and index results. S&P Dow Jones Indices explains the role of methodology in “Methodology Matters” and its Index Mathematics Methodology.

How concentrated is the S&P 500?
Broad market coverage does not mean equal influence among all constituents. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the ten largest constituents made up 37.8% of the S&P 500 and the largest constituent made up 8.1% as of August 31, 2026. These are dated index characteristics, not permanent weights; constituent prices and index composition change over time. No comparable Nasdaq-100 concentration figure is established here.
Can you invest directly in either index?
No. An index is a rules-based calculation used to measure a market segment, not a security that can be purchased directly. Investors seeking exposure generally use an ETF, mutual fund, or another investment product that tracks or references the index. Products following the same index can still differ in fees, tracking, structure, and availability through a particular account, so compare the product documents and current expenses rather than assuming the index name makes them interchangeable.

Which index is the better fit?
The answer depends on the market exposure you want, not on which index has the more familiar name. The S&P 500 is the more direct benchmark for large-cap U.S. equity exposure. The Nasdaq-100 represents a more constrained group: large companies listed on Nasdaq, excluding financial companies, with a notable but not exclusive technology presence.
- For a broad large-cap U.S. benchmark, consider what the S&P 500 represents and remember that it remains weighted toward its largest constituents.
- For exposure specifically tied to large Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies, the Nasdaq-100’s eligibility rules are the defining distinction.
- When choosing an actual investment, compare the fund’s current expenses, tracking behavior, structure, and account eligibility; index characteristics alone do not establish a product’s cost or performance.
Index point levels are not share prices, and two indexes’ point values cannot be compared as if they measured relative valuation. Past index performance also does not establish future returns.
