The built-in keyboard shortcut to put a Windows 11 PC to sleep is:

Windows + X, then U, then S

Press the keys in sequence rather than holding them all at once. Windows + X opens the Quick Link menu, U opens Shut down or sign out, and S selects Sleep.

How to use the Windows 11 Sleep shortcut

  1. Press Windows + X.
  2. Press U to open Shut down or sign out.
  3. Press S to select Sleep.

The complete sequence is:

Win + X, U, S

Do not press and hold U and S together with the Windows key. This is a menu access-key sequence: open one menu, then choose the next option.

Use the mouse instead

Start > Power > Sleep

This is also useful when the keyboard sequence does not work because of a different Windows display language or changed access keys.

Why the U and S keys might not work

The letters in Win + X, U, S are access keys for the Quick Link menu. They are not a universal, language-independent Sleep command. On an English-language Windows 11 installation, U and S normally select the expected options. In another display language, the letters may be different.

To check the correct keys:

  1. Press Windows + X to open the Quick Link menu.
  2. Look for the underlined letter beside Shut down or sign out.
  3. Press that letter.
  4. Look for the underlined letter beside Sleep, then press it.

Windows can show access-key underlines when available. Go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, then enable Underline access keys.

Is there a single-key Sleep shortcut?

Windows 11 does not provide a universal dedicated Sleep key in its standard keyboard shortcut list. Some laptops and keyboards include a manufacturer-specific Sleep key or function-key combination, but that depends on the hardware.

Windows + L is not a Sleep shortcut. It locks the PC. Windows may later enter Sleep if the configured idle timeout is reached, but the key combination itself does not immediately put the computer to sleep.

Change automatic Sleep settings

To control when Windows automatically turns off the display or enters Sleep, open:

Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts

There you can change settings such as:

  • Turn my screen off after
  • Make my device sleep after

These settings control automatic idle behavior. They do not replace the immediate Win + X, U, S shortcut.

Some older Windows 11 guides refer to Settings > System > Power & sleep. That is older interface wording. The current Settings location is Power & battery.

Make the physical power button put the PC to sleep

You can configure the computer’s physical power button to invoke Sleep instead of shutting down:

  1. Open Start, search for Control Panel, and open it.
  2. Select System and Security.
  3. Under Power Options, select Choose what the power buttons do.
  4. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  5. Under When I press the power button, choose Sleep.
  6. Select Save changes.

On a laptop, this page also includes When I close the lid. The behavior can be configured separately for On battery and Plugged in.

When Sleep is missing from the Power menu

If Sleep does not appear under Start > Power, check which sleep states the computer supports. Open Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell and run:

powercfg /a

This reports the available sleep states and explains why unavailable states cannot be used. Sleep availability can depend on the PC’s firmware, hardware, drivers, and power model, including Modern Standby or traditional S3 sleep.

When the PC immediately wakes up

A wake-enabled device, wake timer, driver, application, or power request can cause a computer to wake shortly after entering Sleep. These commands can help identify the cause:

Command What it reports
powercfg /lastwake What woke the system after its last sleep transition
powercfg /waketimers Active wake timers
powercfg /requests Applications, services, and drivers making power requests
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed Devices currently allowed to wake the PC

If a monitor, printer, scanner, or another connected device does not work correctly after waking, disconnect and reconnect it, restart the PC, and check for current device drivers.

Sleep versus Hibernate

Sleep keeps your current session readily available while using very little power, so it generally resumes quickly. Hibernate writes the session to disk, uses less power than Sleep, and resumes more slowly. They are separate power states.

If Hibernate is available, you can select it from:

Start > Power > Hibernate

or:

Windows + X > Shut down or sign out > Hibernate

Sleep does not require Hibernate to be enabled. However, disabling Hibernate also disables Fast Startup and prevents hybrid sleep from working. To disable or re-enable Hibernate, open an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal and run:

FAQ

What is the shortcut key for Sleep in Windows 11?

Press Windows + X, then press U, then S. The keys are pressed sequentially, not simultaneously.

Does Windows + L put Windows 11 to sleep?

No. Windows + L locks the PC. Windows may sleep later according to its idle power settings, but the shortcut itself does not start Sleep.

Why does Windows + X, U, S not work?

The U and S letters are Quick Link menu access keys and can vary by display language or menu localization. Open the menu with Windows + X and use the underlined letters shown beside Shut down or sign out and Sleep.
