HotHardware’s 2001 review found that switching required a full shutdown and restart; the reviewer also reported no observed HD Tach performance difference in the tested setup. Its practical appeal was straightforward drive selection, while its light plastic construction and cramped connector layout drew criticism.
What the RX-910T6 does
The RX-910T6 sits between a legacy computer and up to three IDE hard drives, allowing the user to select which drive the system uses. Contemporary coverage described the drives as separate bootable options. HotHardware’s 2001 review said the unit was compatible with Apple Macintosh and PC systems, but that historical statement is not a guarantee of compatibility with every machine, drive, or adapter.
The review is by Jeff Bouton and is dated July 5, 2001. Its page-two archive listing shows December 15, 2001, which is an archive date rather than the review date. Read the HotHardware review.
How drive selection works
The selector does not switch the active drive while the computer is running. Bouton reported that pressing another selection button had no effect until the system was completely shut down and restarted. The shutdown requirement is central to using the device: choose the drive, power down, then restart so the selection takes effect.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Dual-Drive Simultaneous Use & Wide Compatibility】This adapter supports connecting one IDE drive and one SATA drive at the same time. It works with 2.5"/3.5" IDE HDDs, 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDDs and SSDs, as well as optical drives like CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and DVD-RW. The dual-head IDE connector (40-pin and 44-pin) and a SATA III port give you maximum flexibility for data migration, backup, or drive recovery.
- 【High-Speed Transfer with USB 3.0 & SATA III】Experience data transfer rates up to 6Gbps through the SATA III interface, with USB 3.0 connectivity (backward compatible with USB 2.0/1.1). Please ensure your computer has a USB-A port, as this adapter uses a USB-A connection only.
- 【Stable Power Supply for Reliable Operation】The included 12V/2A power adapter is essential for stable performance—please always connect it when using the adapter, especially when accessing two drives simultaneously. The 4-pin power cable is designed specifically for 3.5" IDE drives (not required for SATA drives).
- 【Plug-and-Play with User-Friendly Design】No driver installation required. Supports hot-swapping for quick drive changes, and features an On/Off switch to protect your hard drives from unnecessary wear. The LED indicator clearly shows power and activity status.
- 【What's Included & Support】You'll receive the USB 3.0 to IDE+SATA adapter, a USB 3.0 data cable, a 4-pin power cable, a 12V/2A power adapter, and our 24/7 dedicated email support.
Bouton described the behavior as “an excellent safety feature” because it prevents changing the selection while the computer is operating. That is the reviewer’s assessment of this shutdown-only behavior, not a modern safety certification or a guarantee against data loss.
Installation and cable routing
HotHardware found drive-bay mounting easy, but connecting the IDE cables was awkward in a tight case. The connectors were closely spaced, so the reviewer advised care when aligning cables with the pins. Rounded cables supplied by PCNut were used to make routing easier in that installation; the review does not establish that they are required or included with every unit.

What HotHardware tested—and what it found
The reviewer connected three drives from different manufacturers and reported that all worked without error. The test drives were a 15 GB IBM DTLA 30715 at 7200 RPM, an 8 GB Western Digital at 5400 RPM, and a 10 GB Maxtor 3 2049H2 at 5400 RPM. These were components in the 2001 test, not an official supported-capacity specification.
HD Tach showed no observed performance difference before and after installing the selector in that test setup. This is a result from one historical review, not a universal performance guarantee or a current measurement.

Design trade-offs and historical verdict
Bouton praised the selector’s function and the tested performance, but criticized its light plastic construction, clunky-feeling buttons, and awkwardly placed IDE connectors. HotHardware assigned it a Heat Meter score of 7. The review listed a price of $80 in 2001 and considered that expensive; it should not be read as a current price.

The most precise search phrase is “Romtec Trios RX-910T6 IDE hard drive selector.” A Newegg catalog result names the model and was first listed June 30, 2025, while eBay has a product page identifying it. Those listings do not establish current stock, condition, or availability through Amazon. No current price, verified inventory count, official manual, or current manufacturer documentation is established here. For a vintage unit, assess the specific seller’s item and evidence of working operation rather than treating a catalog listing as proof that it is available or functional.
