Depending on your Windows settings and keyboard, pressing it either opens screen snipping or copies a full-screen image to the clipboard. Other shortcuts save a screenshot directly, capture only the active window, or let you select a region.
The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or PrntScrn. It is usually near the upper-right of a keyboard, although its position and secondary legends vary by model. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the exact bare-key result can differ because of the Print Screen setting and hardware design.
What the Print Screen key does
Print Screen is a keyboard screenshot command. A capture can go to the Windows clipboard, open in Snipping Tool for editing, or be written as an image file, depending on the shortcut you use.
On current Windows guidance, the setting at Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping controls whether the key opens the snipping overlay. Turn that setting off if you want the traditional clipboard behavior. Microsoft also documents the older/general meaning of Print Screen as copying the whole screen, so do not assume that one bare-key action is identical on every Windows installation.

- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.

The key can share a legend such as SysRq. On compact laptops it may be part of an Fn layer rather than a dedicated button. Check the keyboard’s secondary labels and the manufacturer’s guide when the expected shortcut does nothing.
Microsoft identifies the key and its Windows behavior in its Print Screen shortcut documentation, Windows shortcut reference, and screen-copy instructions.
Choose the shortcut for the result you want
| Goal | Shortcut or method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Save the whole screen as a file | Windows logo key + PrtScn | A full-screen image, normally in Pictures > Screenshots. Hardware support can vary. |
| Select part of the screen | Windows logo key + Shift + S | The screen-snipping overlay; choose a rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen area, then copy or save it. |
| Capture the active window | Alt + PrtScn | The current window is copied to the clipboard. Paste it with Ctrl+V. |
| No dedicated PrtScn key | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | Microsoft lists this as a fallback for some devices; the Fn arrangement is hardware-dependent. |
| Capture and annotate | Open Snipping Tool | Choose a capture mode, mark it up, save it, or share it. |
A clipboard capture is not automatically a file. Paste it into Paint, Word, an email, or another compatible app, then save from that application. The Windows + PrtScn shortcut is the direct file-saving option when your keyboard supports it.
How to take a full-screen screenshot
Save directly with Windows + PrtScn
- Display the content you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + PrtScn together. On some laptops, hold Fn as well.
- Open File Explorer and select Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or edit the image as needed.
If the screen briefly dims but no file appears, search File Explorer for “Screenshots” and confirm that your Pictures folder has not been redirected to another location. If nothing is created, use Windows + Shift + S and save the result from Snipping Tool.
Copy the entire screen to the clipboard
- Press PrtScn (or the keyboard’s Fn-layer equivalent).
- Open an image editor such as Paint.
- Press Ctrl+V.
- Select File > Save as and choose PNG, JPEG, or another format.
How to capture one window or a selected region
Active window with Alt + PrtScn
Click the window you want, press Alt + PrtScn, and paste with Ctrl+V. This excludes the taskbar and other windows. It is useful for documenting one dialog box without revealing the rest of the desktop.

Region with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip from the overlay.
- Make the selection. Windows copies the result to the clipboard.
- Select the notification that appears to open Snipping Tool, or paste directly into another app.
- Use the editor’s save command to create an image file.
Snipping Tool also supports annotation and sharing. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool guide describes image capture and the separate Windows + Shift + R video-snipping shortcut. Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker are documented as features limited to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, not universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 functions.
What happens to a Print Screen image?
Clipboard destination
PrtScn and Alt + PrtScn commonly place an image in the clipboard. The clipboard holds the pixels temporarily; closing the source application does not turn them into a permanent file. Paste promptly or save through an editor.
File destination
Windows + PrtScn is intended to save a full-screen capture in Pictures > Screenshots. Automatic saving from Snipping Tool can depend on its current settings and default folder, so verify the location in the app if your files are not where expected.
Editing and privacy
Before sharing, crop private notifications, account names, tokens, or personal messages. Snipping Tool’s markup tools can add a pen, highlighter, or basic annotation, but drawing over sensitive data is not a reliable redaction method unless the covered pixels are permanently removed or blurred.
Using a keyboard without a Print Screen button
First inspect keys for a small PrtSc, PrtScn, or camera-style icon and try the key with Fn. Microsoft states: “If your device does not have the PrtScn button, you may use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar to take a screenshot, which can then be printed.” That combination is not guaranteed on every laptop, so consult the device manual when it fails.

Troubleshooting Print Screen problems
Pressing PrtScn opens the snipping overlay
That is expected when Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping is enabled. To restore clipboard-style behavior, go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn that option off.

- Try Fn + PrtScn or the device’s alternate key layer.
- Use Windows + Shift + S to determine whether Windows capture itself works.
- Check whether another utility has remapped the key.
- Restart the keyboard or reconnect it if it is external.
The screenshot is not in Pictures > Screenshots
Confirm you used Windows + PrtScn rather than bare PrtScn, which may only copy to the clipboard. Check OneDrive or another folder-redirection setting, and search for recently modified PNG files. Snipping Tool may use a different save location or automatic-save preference.
The pasted image is black or incomplete
Some protected video, remote-desktop, hardware-accelerated, or secure-content surfaces deliberately block capture. Try capturing a normal window to isolate whether the limitation belongs to the application rather than the keyboard.
Only one monitor appears
Full-screen shortcuts can include all displays or behave according to the active Windows capture mode. Use Windows + Shift + S and select the exact monitor or window when a multi-monitor result is ambiguous.

Automate screenshots without pressing a key
For a one-off desktop capture, Windows shortcuts are simplest. For scheduled website captures, documentation pipelines, regression checks, or screenshots from an AI workflow, an API avoids browser setup.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
Here is a complete cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo includes full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPerformance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Keyboard shortcuts: instantaneous and offline, but limited to the current desktop and whatever the application permits.
- Clipboard captures: fast, but temporary until pasted and saved.
- Snipping Tool: best for selecting, annotating, and sharing a specific area; automatic-save behavior depends on its settings.
- Website APIs: better for repeatable remote captures, but page loading, authentication, lazy content, consent dialogs, and network conditions must be handled. ScreenshotNeo’s wait, cookie, header, blocking, caching, and verdict features address those cases; failed loads and cache hits are not billed.
For a single image of your monitor, use Windows + Shift + S or Windows + PrtScn. For many URLs or an automated pipeline, an API call produces a repeatable output without requiring a visible browser session.
