Harvard’s PGP was the pilot site; the wider effort includes projects in several countries. Public sharing is central to the model, so participants are not promised anonymity or confidentiality.
What the Personal Genome Project is
The PGP is a research vision and coalition of projects, not a consumer DNA-testing brand. It brings genomic information—such as DNA sequence and gene-expression data—together with information about traits, medical history, biospecimens, and environmental exposures. Researchers can use these linked data to investigate relationships and test or extend scientific findings. The Harvard Personal Genome Project overview describes the initiative as a way to study personal genomics and the benefits and risks of open sharing.
Harvard’s project began in 2005 as a pilot involving 10 people. Its overview reports that it now has more than 5,000 participants, without specifying a census date. The Harvard site is one member of a broader network, not the whole PGP. The Personal Genome Project: Global Network lists projects in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Austria, and China.
Why the project makes data public
Linking genomic data with traits and environmental information can help researchers explore how biological and contextual factors relate. Public availability also lets other researchers examine data, reproduce analyses, and pursue new questions. The Global Network’s guidelines call for publicly accessible integrated data under a CC0 waiver or an equivalent public-domain license.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This openness distinguishes the PGP from a conventional confidential biobank. Participants agree that information will be shared publicly, and published genomic data can be identifying or connected with other information. The Harvard project states: “Privacy, confidentiality and anonymity are impossible to guarantee in a context like this research study where public sharing of genetic data is an explicit goal.” The Global Network likewise says re-identification risks are addressed during consent and that anonymity and confidentiality are not promised.
What participation can involve
Harvard PGP eligibility and enrollment
Harvard’s requirements are specific to that site; they should not be assumed to apply to other national projects. Its participation page says applicants must be at least 18, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, be able to provide autonomous consent, and be willing to share genetic, health, and trait information publicly and non-anonymously. Current employees and students of principal investigator George Church are ineligible under the posted criteria.

The Harvard process includes screening, informed consent, an online exam intended to check understanding of the risks and protocols, and an application review. Prospective participants should consider implications for themselves and relatives before agreeing to public release.
Information and samples
Participants may provide health and trait information through questionnaires and other platforms and may contribute biological samples. Samples can be used for DNA or RNA analysis, study of other biological characteristics, or creation of cell lines. The Harvard procedure page describes an ongoing prospective study and says participants may leave at any time.

Enrollment does not guarantee that a participant will receive sequencing or another analysis. The project says genomic analysis depends on funding and affordable services, and it cannot promise analysis for everyone. The project is designed to generate and publish research data and interpretive reports; it is not a clinical service promising a diagnosis, treatment, or medically actionable result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the wider network differs from the Harvard site
National projects belong to the wider PGP network, but their eligibility, consent terms, data collection, participant access, sample availability, release rules, and ethics oversight may differ. The Global Network’s shared open-data approach does not make every local procedure identical. Check the relevant project’s own participation and consent information rather than applying Harvard’s rules to another country.

For research samples, Coriell/NIGMS describes PGP participant materials—including cell lines and DNA samples—as consented for public posting of personally identifying genetic information and for commercial use. Repository offerings and inventory can change; a sample repository is a research resource, not a consumer testing service. See the Coriell/NIGMS Human Genetic Cell Repository description.

What the PGP does not promise
- Confidentiality or anonymity: public release is part of the model, and genomic data may be identifying.
- Sequencing for every participant: analysis depends on funding and capacity.
- Medical care or a diagnosis: the purpose is research, not a guaranteed clinical service.
- One universal enrollment rule: eligibility and procedures are determined by each local project.
