Apple’s vapor-chamber cooling system is built into iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. A laser-welded chamber containing deionized water moves heat from the A19 Pro chip into the phones’ aluminum unibody, which spreads that heat through the device. Apple says the design enables up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation; that is Apple’s claim, not an independently reported test result.
Which iPhones have a vapor chamber?
Apple identifies the vapor chamber as a feature of iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, introduced in September 2025. It is an internal component, not an accessory or a feature that can be added to another iPhone. Apple documents the same cooling feature on both models; its announcement does not establish that one cools better than the other.
The practical distinction for shoppers is therefore model size and fit, not a documented difference in vapor-chamber performance. Both are listed with the system in Apple’s announcement.
How does the vapor chamber cool the iPhone?
Apple describes the chamber and aluminum unibody as a combined thermal system. Deionized water sealed inside the chamber helps move heat away from the A19 Pro chip. The chamber is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis, and the conductive body distributes heat through the phone. Apple says the design manages power and surface temperatures while aiming to keep the phone comfortable to hold.

This is not a fan or an external cooler, and Apple does not promise that the phone will stay cool in every use or environment. The available Apple descriptions do not specify the chamber’s dimensions, wick structure, operating pressure, measured temperature changes, or independent performance results.
What does Apple mean by “up to 40 percent better sustained performance”?
Apple says A19 Pro paired with the vapor chamber delivers up to 40 percent better sustained performance than the previous generation. The figure is an Apple comparison, presented with “up to”; Apple’s cited announcement does not provide a test protocol or independent validation. It should not be read as a guaranteed gain in every app, a battery-life increase, or a result reproduced by independent testing.

In its September 9, 2025 announcement, Apple described the mechanism this way: “Deionized water is sealed inside the vapor chamber, which is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis to move heat away from the powerful A19 Pro, allowing it to operate at even higher performance levels.” That is Apple’s product description, not an independent test finding.
What is the vapor chamber made of?
Apple’s technical specifications state that the vapor-chamber enclosure contains 100% recycled copper. This is a materials detail; it does not establish a particular cooling result or performance advantage.

The feature is relevant if sustained performance under demanding workloads matters to you, but Apple’s up-to figure alone cannot predict how much improvement you will see in a particular app or situation. Both iPhone 17 Pro models include the chamber, and the cited Apple information does not show a cooling advantage for the Pro Max over the Pro. Choose between them based on your size and device preferences rather than an unsupported assumption that one has better cooling.
