Those systems assess many signals to choose results relevant to a search, but Google does not publish the complete formula or the weight of each signal.
How Google Search gets from a web page to a result
Search involves separate stages. A page must first be discovered and processed before ranking systems can consider it for a query. Meeting Google’s technical requirements makes a page eligible for consideration; it does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or show it.
- Crawling: Google discovers pages by following links and other routes to content.
- Rendering: Google may process a page’s code, including JavaScript, to understand what users can see.
- Indexing: Google analyzes and organizes the content it can understand. A page that is not indexed generally cannot appear as a standard result.
- Serving and ranking: In response to a search, automated systems select and order eligible results they judge relevant and useful.
These stages explain why ranking is not the same as indexing: being present in Google’s index does not guarantee a particular position—or even that a page will be shown for a given query.
What Google’s ranking systems do
Google describes systems with different purposes, from understanding a query to identifying spam. The examples below are functions, not a complete inventory or a checklist that guarantees ranking. Google regularly improves its systems, and some systems once discussed separately have since been incorporated into broader core ranking systems.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Purpose | Examples Google describes | What they help do |
|---|---|---|
| Understand language and meaning | BERT, RankBrain, neural matching | Interpret how words relate to one another and connect concepts in a query with concepts in pages. |
| Assess links | PageRank and other link-analysis systems | Use links to help assess pages. Google says PageRank remains part of its core ranking systems, though it has evolved since its early form. |
| Account for recency or particular needs | Freshness systems and systems for needs such as local news, crises, original content, and reliable information | Surface newer material when recency matters, or respond to specific kinds of search need. |
| Identify relevant material within pages | Passage ranking | Help find a useful section of a page, rather than treating only the page as a whole as relevant. |
| Assess particular content types and result sets | Reviews system; site-diversity systems | Reward reviews with insightful analysis or original research, and generally limit how many results from one site appear together. Site-diversity limits can have exceptions. |
| Detect spam | Spam detection systems, including SpamBrain | Identify content that violates Google’s spam policies. Violations can lead to lower rankings or removal from Search. |
What the algorithm means for website owners
Make content for people, not a supposed formula
Google recommends creating helpful, reliable, people-first content for an existing or intended audience. Original information or analysis and a satisfying experience matter more than trying to reverse-engineer a list of signals that Google does not disclose in full.
E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. Google says E-E-A-T is not itself a specific ranking factor. Instead, its systems use a mix of factors that can help identify content demonstrating these qualities; trust is the most important element in Google’s explanation of E-E-A-T.

Don’t treat a page-experience score as a ranking guarantee
Google says there is no single page-experience signal. Core Web Vitals are used by ranking systems, but a good report or score does not guarantee a top position. Usability is broader: mobile display, security, intrusive interstitials, and ads that interfere with the main content can all affect the experience people have on a page.
Separate eligibility from payment and ranking
Following technical requirements and best practices does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Google also says it does not accept payment to rank pages higher in organic Search.

What to check if Google Search traffic drops
A decline does not, by itself, show that a core update or another single algorithm change caused it. Compare the affected queries and pages, then check other explanations before changing content or URLs.

- Find the pattern: Identify which queries and pages lost traffic, and when the change began.
- Check technical issues: Look for crawl, indexing, rendering, or other site problems that could keep pages from appearing.
- Review policy and manual-action issues: Check whether spam-policy concerns or a manual action may be involved.
- Consider demand and timing: Seasonality or changes in what people search for can alter traffic without a ranking-system change.
- Account for site moves: Changing existing URLs can cause fluctuations while Google recrawls and reindexes pages.
