A link’s destination address is the URL or other URI it leads to; the link text is the label people see or hear. In HTML, the destination is usually set by the link’s href attribute.
Destination address vs. link text
For example, in <a href="https://example.com/help">Read the help guide</a>, https://example.com/help is the destination address. “Read the help guide” is the link text, also called the link label. The two serve different purposes: the address identifies the destination, while the label describes the link to the reader. W3C’s HTML reference explains that the text between an anchor’s tags defines its label: W3C, Hypertext Links.
What can a link destination point to?
A destination can identify a web page or another resource, such as a document or image. It can also point to a specific location within a document, commonly by using a fragment identifier after #. In HTML, the href attribute specifies the address. See the W3C HTML 4.01 specification on links.
How to write clear link text
Choose link text that tells people what the link is for, such as “Read the help guide,” rather than an unexplained URL or vague wording such as “click here.” This helps readers understand a link’s purpose before following it. W3C Web Accessibility Initiative guidance notes that a destination URI is generally not sufficiently descriptive on its own: Technique H30: Providing link text that describes the purpose of a link.
