Firefox ESR 115 is the best mainstream browser for a standard Windows 8.1 PC. It is the only major browser in this comparison still receiving security updates for Windows 8.1. Mozilla’s current supported build is Firefox ESR 115.38.0, released on July 21, 2026.
Mozilla currently plans to support Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 with Firefox ESR updates through March 2027. That does not make Windows 8.1 secure overall—Microsoft ended operating-system support on January 10, 2023—but it gives Firefox the strongest security and compatibility position available on this version of Windows.
Why Firefox ESR 115 is the best choice
Firefox ESR means Extended Support Release. Instead of following Mozilla’s newest feature branch, ESR 115 receives important security and stability fixes while remaining compatible with older versions of Windows.

Firefox ESR 115 is the best option when you want the longest remaining official support, browser security fixes, and the best chance of opening modern websites without installing a discontinued browser.

Mozilla’s support documentation contains an older paragraph referring to August 2026, but the updated section states that support has been extended through March 2027. The newer support statement and the July 2026 ESR release are the applicable information.
How to install Firefox ESR on Windows 8.1
- Open Mozilla’s official Firefox download page.
- Download the Windows installer offered for your system. Windows 8.1 should be directed to Firefox ESR 115 rather than the current Firefox feature branch.
- Choose the 64-bit installer if you are running 64-bit Windows 8.1 and the PC has adequate memory.
- Choose the 32-bit installer if Windows 8.1 is 32-bit, the computer has limited memory, or older software specifically requires a 32-bit browser.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the setup prompts.
Mozilla also provides MSI installers for managed or scripted installations. According to Mozilla’s Firefox ESR 115 system requirements, it requires a Pentium 4 or newer processor with SSE2 support, at least 512 MB of RAM for 32-bit Windows or 2 GB for 64-bit Windows, and roughly 200 MB of free disk space.
Check which Firefox version is installed
Open Firefox and select Menu → Help → About Firefox. The About Firefox window shows the installed version and checks for updates. If an update is ready, select Restart to update Firefox.
There is one important exception: if Firefox came from the Microsoft Store, updates are delivered through the Microsoft Store rather than Mozilla’s ordinary standalone updater.

32-bit or 64-bit Firefox?
Firefox ESR 115 supports both architectures. The correct choice depends primarily on the architecture of Windows, not just the processor.
- Use 64-bit Firefox on 64-bit Windows 8.1 when the computer has at least 2 GB of RAM and no software compatibility reason to use 32-bit.
- Use 32-bit Firefox on 32-bit Windows 8.1. A 64-bit browser cannot turn a 32-bit Windows installation into a 64-bit one.
- On an extremely low-memory computer, the 32-bit edition may be more practical, although upgrading the operating system or hardware is the better long-term solution.
Why Chrome is no longer the best browser
Chrome 109 was the final Chrome version supporting Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Google released it on January 10, 2023, and current Chrome versions require Windows 10 or later.
Chrome 109 may still start and may open many websites, but it no longer receives normal security or feature updates. A browser that launches is not necessarily a supported or safe browser. The old advice that Chrome is the best Windows 8.1 browser because it is fast or widely compatible is now outdated.
Why Microsoft Edge is not the answer
Edge 109 was the last Microsoft Edge version supporting Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. Microsoft ended support for those systems with that release.

The old Edge Legacy application is not a fallback. Microsoft ended support for Edge Legacy on March 9, 2021. Microsoft branding does not extend Edge’s support beyond the Windows versions it officially supports.
What about Pale Moon, Opera, Vivaldi, and Brave?

Pale Moon: a reasonable secondary option
Pale Moon is worth considering if you specifically want its customization options, extension ecosystem, or non-Chromium-based engine. Its version 34.3.1 release, listed in June 2026, included security and bug fixes.
It is not the best general-purpose recommendation because Pale Moon intentionally omits or differs from some web APIs and features. Websites built and tested primarily for current Chromium or Firefox releases can therefore display incorrectly or lose functionality. Firefox ESR is the safer default for everyday browsing.
Windows 8.1 RT is different
Firefox ESR 115 is intended for ordinary Intel- or AMD-based Windows 8.1 desktop PCs. It is not available for Windows RT 8.1 devices such as the original Surface RT.

To check the distinction, open Control Panel → System and Security → System and review the Windows edition and processor information. An Intel or AMD Windows 8.1 computer is not the same as an ARM-based Windows RT tablet. The recommendation for the former does not apply to the latter.
What Firefox ESR 115 cannot fix
Installing a supported browser improves browser security, but it does not bring Windows 8.1 back into support. Microsoft no longer provides normal Windows security updates or fixes for the operating system, and Windows 8.1 did not receive a Microsoft Extended Security Updates program.
Firefox ESR 115 also cannot guarantee that every modern website will work. Some sites may require browser features introduced after Firefox 115, refuse older browsers, or depend on current operating-system components. Mozilla’s release notes describe ESR 115.38.0 as a security-fix release rather than a current Firefox feature release.
For safer use:
- Install Firefox only from Mozilla or the Microsoft Store.
- Keep Firefox updated through Menu → Help → About Firefox, or through the Microsoft Store if that is where it was installed.
- Use a reputable password manager and enable multifactor authentication on important accounts.
- Avoid unsupported browsers such as Chrome 109, Edge 109, Opera 95, and Vivaldi 5.6 for sensitive work.
- Plan to move to a supported Windows version or another supported operating system before Mozilla ends ESR 115 maintenance.
Recommended choice
For a normal Windows 8.1 desktop or laptop, install Firefox ESR 115.38.0, or the latest ESR 115 update Mozilla offers to that computer. It is the best-supported mainstream browser as of August 7, 2026, and Mozilla currently plans to provide security updates through March 2027.

Choose Pale Moon only if you have a specific reason to prefer its engine and accept occasional website compatibility problems. Do not choose an old Chromium browser merely because it still opens: Chrome 109, Edge 109, Opera 95, and Vivaldi 5.6 are discontinued branches.
