A router’s 2.5G Ethernet port provides a wired connection with a maximum link rate of 2.5 Gbps. Depending on the router, you can use it to connect the router to a fast modem or optical network terminal (ONT), or to connect a compatible wired device or switch. It can remove a 1 Gbps Ethernet bottleneck on that link, but it does not upgrade your internet plan or guarantee 2.5 Gbps internet speeds.
What can you plug into a router’s 2.5G port?
The port’s role depends on the router model and, on some models, its configuration. Check the router’s manual or port settings before connecting equipment; the label alone does not tell you whether the port is WAN or LAN.
Use it as a WAN port for internet service
If the port is configured as WAN, connect it to a modem, ONT, or other internet source with a multi-gig Ethernet output. This can avoid a 1 Gbps limit at the router’s internet connection when your service and source device support a faster rate. NETGEAR provides setup instructions for specific Nighthawk routers, while ASUS describes setting a supported 2.5G or 10G port as WAN; available options depend on the model: NETGEAR setup guidance and ASUS WAN-port guidance.
Use it as a LAN port for a wired device
If configured as LAN, connect a compatible computer, network-attached storage (NAS) device, or multi-gig switch. This can help a device exceed a 1 Gbps wired link for local transfers or internet access, provided the router’s LAN path, the client’s Ethernet interface, and any intervening switch also support the faster rate.

WAN or LAN: which use should you choose?

Some routers have a fixed WAN or LAN role; others let you assign a multi-gig port to either purpose. A router with only one 2.5G port may require choosing between a faster internet uplink and a faster wired LAN connection. Verify the role, port count, and configuration for your exact model using its manual or settings page. TP-Link also discusses multi-gig port scenarios in its home network guidance.
What determines the actual speed?
A 2.5G label is the port’s maximum link rate, not a promise of end-to-end throughput. The effective speed depends on the slowest relevant part of the connection:

- For internet access: the ISP plan, modem or ONT output, the router’s WAN port and routing capability, and the wired client’s connection.
- For a wired LAN connection: the router’s LAN port and internal path, the client’s Ethernet interface, and any intervening switch.
- For either setup: the cable and the capabilities of every device in the link.
For example, a 2.5G WAN connection does not give a wired computer faster than 1 Gbps if that computer connects through a 1 Gbps LAN port. Similarly, a 2.5G LAN port cannot make a 1 Gbps computer or switch operate at 2.5 Gbps. NETGEAR explains that gigabit ports can constrain multi-gig devices or service in its multi-gig Ethernet overview.

Not necessarily. NETGEAR says its cited multi-gig ports are backward-compatible with 100 Mbps and gigabit Ethernet devices and support higher speeds over Cat5e and Cat6 cable. ASUS recommends Cat6 or above in guidance for a 10G WAN setup. Use cabling appropriate for the devices and connection in question, but replacing a cable alone will not overcome a slower internet plan, modem or ONT, router path, or client interface.

A multi-gig switch is optional: consider one only if your router provides a usable multi-gig LAN connection and you want additional wired multi-gig ports. It cannot make a slower router connection or client device faster.

Check these details before connecting
- Identify the port’s role. Look up the exact router model to see whether its 2.5G port is WAN, LAN, or configurable.
- For faster internet, check the upstream equipment. Confirm that the plan and modem or ONT Ethernet output support more than 1 Gbps.
- For faster wired devices, check the whole LAN path. Confirm that the router connection, any switch, and the client’s Ethernet adapter support the intended rate.
- Check the cable and settings. Use suitable cabling and make sure the port is configured for the role you intend to use.
