Text fitting in generated images is the process of making requested words appear as the correct characters, in the correct order, at a readable size, with suitable spacing, alignment, and visual integration into the image. It combines text rendering (drawing accurate glyphs) with layout (deciding where and how the text occupies the composition). A prompt that merely says “add this slogan” does not reliably solve either problem.
Text fitting is more than adding words to a picture
When a generator creates a poster, package, sign, meme, or social graphic, the text has several simultaneous constraints:
- Character accuracy: every letter, number, accent, and punctuation mark must be correct.
- Word order: the requested sequence must be preserved rather than replaced by letter-like marks.
- Legibility: the text needs enough contrast, resolution, and spacing to be read at its intended display size.
- Layout: the copy must fit a planned region, orientation, and hierarchy without colliding with the subject or margins.
- Typography: font shape, weight, line breaks, tracking, and style should match the design.
- Scene integration: signs, labels, or lettering on curved or angled surfaces must remain consistent with the surrounding perspective and lighting.
“Rendering” usually refers to producing the glyphs themselves. “Fitting” includes rendering plus the spatial decisions: how wide a line is, where it sits, how it wraps, and how it relates to the rest of the image. A system can draw recognizable letters yet still fail at fitting if the slogan overflows its panel or breaks the visual hierarchy.
Why AI-generated text comes out garbled
Diffusion models learn visual associations, not guaranteed spelling
Diffusion models can associate a prompt with the idea of a word while failing to preserve its exact letter sequence. The ARTIST authors described text rendering as a continuing limitation despite the models’ broad visual abilities. STRICT likewise reports that systems “continue to struggle with generating consistent and legible text within images.” These observations explain why a familiar brand-like word may look plausible while containing incorrect characters.

Locality bias makes long words harder
STRICT (EMNLP 2025) links failures to locality bias and evaluates maximum readable length, correctness, and legibility. In practical terms, the model may handle a short, isolated label more easily than a long headline with several words, punctuation, and line breaks. More characters create more opportunities for omissions, substitutions, and collisions.
Many systems lack character-level input features
Google Research reported that popular text-to-image models lack character-level input features, making it harder to predict a word’s visual makeup as a sequence of glyphs. A natural-language token can carry the concept “coffee,” but that does not necessarily expose the generator to the individual shapes C-O-F-F-E-E in a way that enforces exact output.
Typography and perspective add separate failure modes
A generator may produce readable characters but use an unintended font, inconsistent stroke widths, irregular baselines, or spacing that changes from one letter to the next. Text painted onto a bottle, curved sign, or distant storefront must also follow perspective and lighting. Prompt wording alone rarely specifies all of these constraints precisely.
How current methods improve text fitting
| Approach | What it controls | Important limitation or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt-only generation | Concept, approximate wording, and overall scene | Does not guarantee character sequence, line breaks, or font consistency. |
| TextDiffuser | Predicts a keyword layout before painting the image | Layout prediction is an additional stage; output quality remains model- and benchmark-dependent. |
| DesignDiffusion | Character decomposition and localization losses | More explicit character and position supervision is needed during training. |
| Glyph-aware or character-aware conditioning | Individual letter structure and text-glyph alignment | Coverage varies by language, script, font, and text length. |
| ViType-style alignment | Aligns text representations with glyph structure | It addresses a core alignment problem, not universal reliability in every scene. |
| EasyText-style multilingual tokens | Multilingual character tokens for text control | Its authors report 1 million synthetic image-text annotations and 20,000 high-quality annotated images; those are dataset figures, not a guarantee for every language. |
| FonTS | Typography-control fine-tuning, a style-control adapter, HTML-rendered training data, and word-level control | Fine-grained font and style control is an active research requirement rather than a solved problem. |
| Template, layout, or inpainting workflow | Places known copy in a supplied region or replaces a generated area | Requires an explicit region, template, or post-generation editing step. |
These methods are complementary. Explicit layout helps placement; glyph-aware conditioning helps letter structure; typography adapters help font and style. None establishes a single model that is reliable across every font, language, scene, and text length.
A reliable workflow for fitting text into a generated image
1. Treat the request as a layout specification
Write the exact copy in quotation marks, including capitalization, punctuation, accents, and line breaks. State the language and script. Then describe the intended region and hierarchy: for example, “two-line headline in the upper third, centered, occupying no more than 60 percent of the canvas width; small subtitle below; subject remains unobstructed.” Add orientation (horizontal, vertical, or angled), approximate size, contrast, and whether the lettering belongs on a physical surface or in a flat graphic panel.
A useful specification separates immutable content from visual choices:

2. Generate several candidates rather than trusting one render
Ask for multiple variations with the same specification. Compare them for exact spelling and layout, not just for attractive backgrounds. Shorter copy and a larger, uncluttered region generally reduce the number of interacting constraints, but no prompt wording can promise perfect spelling.
3. Inspect every character at final size
Zoom in to check ambiguous glyphs such as I/l/1, O/0, accented characters, repeated letters, punctuation, and small counters inside letters. Then view the image at the size and compression your audience will receive. A word that is technically present may still fail if contrast, scale, or background detail makes it unreadable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Lock the layout before adding detail
If the headline must fit a known panel, establish that panel or text region first. Systems such as TextDiffuser explicitly predict keyword layout before painting; other workflows use a supplied region or inpainting. This is more dependable than asking one generation step to invent the scene, typography, and exact copy simultaneously.
5. Finish exact copy in a typography or layout editor
For a product name, legal notice, price, URL, or campaign slogan, place the final text with a tool that lets you edit characters, line breaks, spacing, and alignment directly. Keep the generated image for the illustration, texture, or background and replace uncertain lettering afterward. This is the practical control point when spelling is non-negotiable.
Prompt pattern for a text-fitting request
Use a structured request instead of a vague instruction:
Exact text (preserve every character): “NORTH COAST COFFEE”
Language/script: English, Latin
Layout: two centered lines in the upper third, 12% side margins
Hierarchy: headline dominant; no other readable words
Typography: bold condensed sans-serif, consistent stroke and tracking
Scene: printed on a flat cream poster, straight-on view, even lighting
Constraints: keep the subject below the headline; do not invent extra lettering
This pattern makes the desired region and hierarchy explicit. It still needs visual inspection and, when exact copy matters, post-generation typography.

How to evaluate a text-fitting result
| Check | Pass condition | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Character accuracy | Every requested glyph matches, including accents and punctuation. | Substituted, missing, or extra characters. |
| Readable length | The full line remains legible at delivery size. | Long slogans collapse into marks or become too small. |
| Placement | Text stays inside its planned region with intentional margins. | Overflow, clipping, or collision with the subject. |
| Typography consistency | Baseline, weight, spacing, and style remain uniform. | Mixed-looking glyphs or irregular tracking. |
| Language coverage | The chosen system handles the required script and diacritics. | Missing marks or Latin-like substitutions in non-Latin text. |
| Scene preservation | Background, subject, and lighting remain intact around the lettering. | Inpainting or text placement changes nearby objects. |
Published results from ARTIST, STRICT, Google Research, ViType, and FonTS are method-specific and benchmark-dependent. There is no single consumer reliability score that applies to all models and scripts, so evaluate the exact language, font style, length, and scene you plan to publish.
Troubleshooting common failures
The word looks plausible but is misspelled
Shorten the copy, isolate the text in a larger region, and request one exact line with no additional readable words. Generate alternatives and inspect each glyph. If the copy is legally or commercially important, replace it in a typography editor rather than iterating indefinitely on prompts.
Letters overlap or the line runs outside the panel
Specify a maximum width, side margins, alignment, and line breaks. Reserve the region before adding background detail. A layout-aware or inpainting workflow is preferable when the panel has fixed dimensions.
The font changes between letters or words
State the typographic characteristics explicitly and use a workflow with typography or style control when available. FonTS addresses this requirement with typography-control fine-tuning and a style-control adapter, but its existence does not establish universal font fidelity.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Accents or non-Latin characters disappear
Declare the language and script, keep the text larger, and verify every diacritic at final size. Character-aware or multilingual-token approaches, such as the direction described by EasyText, are more principled than relying on a generic word prompt, but coverage still depends on the specific system and script.
The lettering damages the surrounding image
Provide a clean text region or mask and use inpainting or a compositing step. Separate the generated scene from the final copy so that correcting one character does not require regenerating the entire composition.
