“Plaid” is Tesla’s name for a high-performance powertrain and trim—not a universal software mode for every Tesla. Elon Musk announced it in September 2019 as the level beyond “Ludicrous,” extending a speed joke from the 1987 comedy Spaceballs. Tesla now offers Model S Plaid as a production tri-motor configuration.
What did Elon Musk announce?
In September 2019, Musk said that “the only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid.” Contemporary reports from TechCrunch and Futurism described a proposed three-motor Plaid powertrain for Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster. Musk clarified that the original plan did not include Model 3 or Model Y.
The phrase “Tesla Plaid mode” can be misleading: the announcement concerned a performance powertrain, not a software toggle available across Tesla vehicles. The original 2019 plan and today’s production lineup are also different questions; Tesla’s current product page lists Model S Plaid.
Why is Tesla Plaid named after Spaceballs?
In Mel Brooks’s 1987 comedy Spaceballs, “Ludicrous speed” gives way to “Plaid” as an even more extreme speed. Tesla had already used “Ludicrous” for a high-performance acceleration setting. Musk extended the film’s joke by naming the next level Plaid.

What does Model S Plaid deliver?
Tesla’s current Model S page lists these specifications for Model S Plaid:
- Powertrain: tri-motor.
- Power: 1,020 hp.
- Acceleration: 0–60 mph in 1.99 seconds.
- Quarter mile: 9.23 seconds at a 155 mph trap speed.
- Top speed: 200 mph indicated. Tesla says this requires a paid hardware upgrade and may not be available for the entire drive.
These are Tesla’s published figures, not an independent test result. The hardware-upgrade condition applies specifically to the indicated top-speed figure.

Which Tesla models have Plaid?
The 2019 announcement named Model S, Model X and the next-generation Roadster. Tesla’s present-day product material confirms Model S Plaid and says Model X adopted the same Plaid powertrain. Do not treat the historical Roadster plan as confirmation that a production Roadster Plaid is currently available; the cited current Tesla pages establish Model S and Model X context, not current Roadster availability.

Tesla says Plaid Track Mode helped Model S set a production-EV Nürburgring lap record in 2021 and again in 2023. Tesla also describes Model X Plaid as capable of 0–100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. These are manufacturer-reported claims, not a substitute for independent comparisons under matched conditions.
