Telstra’s Aura Network is a terrestrial fibre-optic backbone that carries large volumes of data between cities and network sites. Telstra said its Perth–Sydney route went live on 7 October 2026, passing through Kalgoorlie, Woomera, Port Augusta, Broken Hill, Dubbo and Orange. It is carrier and enterprise infrastructure—not a household broadband plan—and its capacity figures describe network links or trials, not the speed a home internet customer receives.
What is the Aura Network?
Aura is the name Telstra now uses for its intercity fibre backbone, previously called the Intercity Fibre Network. A backbone moves data between major network locations—such as cities, data centres, cloud regions and international gateways. It is different from the access connection that links a home or business to an internet provider. A household may use services whose traffic travels over backbone infrastructure, but Aura itself is not a retail broadband plan.
Telstra describes the network as a way to provide higher-capacity connections between cities and more route diversity. Those are operator-stated design goals; they do not establish that every location has a service or that a particular customer will experience a specific performance improvement. Telstra’s October 2025 announcement introduced Aura and described its intended expansion.
Where does the Perth–Sydney route go?
Telstra announced on 7 October 2026 that its Perth–Sydney route was live. The published path runs east from Perth through Western Australia and South Australia, then across New South Wales to Sydney. Telstra names these intermediate points:

The company says the route strengthens connections between Western Australia, the eastern states and international markets. Telstra also describes regional “on- and off-ramps,” meaning locations along a backbone may be connected into it. A waypoint on a map—or a town near the route—does not by itself confirm that a service is available to a particular premises. Telstra says its map is approximate and deployment routes or kilometres may be adjusted or phased. Check availability with the operator for a specific site. Telstra’s 7 October 2026 announcement gives the route and live status.
How does fibre carry data?
At a basic level, optical equipment encodes data as patterns of light, sends those light signals through glass fibres, and converts them back into data at receiving equipment. The fibre route is the physical path; the optical transmission equipment determines how signals use that path and what capacity can be carried.

Telstra’s public materials describe Aura’s fibre and optical services, but do not give a complete engineering specification for every span of the Perth–Sydney route. Capacity therefore depends on the route, the optical equipment and configuration, and the service arrangement—not simply on the fact that fibre is present.
What services can use the Aura fibre?
Telstra describes three service models. They differ chiefly in who supplies and manages the optical equipment and how much control the customer takes on. The capacities below are company-published examples, not guaranteed throughput for every route or configuration.

| Service | Who manages the optical equipment? | What it offers | Published capacity context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wavelength | Telstra provides a managed service. | Point-to-point optical connectivity for customers who want a managed connection. | Telstra’s 2025 launch material listed 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps services. Source |
| Direct Spectrum | The customer supplies equipment and manages the service. | Scalable optical bandwidth over Telstra infrastructure, with more customer control than a managed wavelength. | Telstra’s 2025 material gave a 3.8–15.2 Tbps range; its later InfraCo article describes fractional fibre-pair options and approximately the same range. Actual capacity depends on equipment and configuration. 2025 source; InfraCo source |
| Dark Fibre | The customer controls the configuration and equipment. | A dedicated fibre path for customers needing the most control over how the fibre is lit and used. | Telstra’s later InfraCo material describes approximately 60–80 Tbps and says its 83 Tbps benchmark came from a desktop simulation for the Sydney–Melbourne ultra-low-loss express link. These figures are route- and configuration-specific, not a universal service speed. Source |
These are carrier and enterprise connectivity options, not consumer products offered through a general retail checkout. The reviewed Telstra material does not establish a consumer price or universal eligibility.
What does 83.6 Tbps mean—and what does it not mean?
Telstra’s 83.6 Tbps figure was a simulation of capacity on a specific 1,200-kilometre Sydney–Melbourne link, reported in 2025. It is not a measured household connection speed, a promise for the Perth–Sydney route, or the speed every Dark Fibre customer receives. It describes a simulated network capacity under a particular route and configuration. Telstra’s 2025 announcement provides that context.

A separate milestone came from Ciena in September 2026. Ciena reported that Telstra carried four 400GbE client services over one wavelength without regeneration on a live Melbourne–Sydney network, over approximately 1,100 kilometres. That is a reported transmission trial using a particular route and configuration. It does not mean all customers receive 1.6 Tbps or that every Aura route uses the same setup. Ciena’s announcement attributes the milestone to that live-network trial.

Network totals are dated snapshots, and construction length is not the same as the length of routes ready for service. Telstra reported more than 9,000 kilometres built and six routes ready for service in its 7 October 2026 announcement. An earlier Telstra InfraCo article said more than 8,500 kilometres had been built as of July 2026 and listed four routes as ready for service as of September 2026. The figures refer to different dates; the earlier snapshot is not a competing current total.

Telstra’s October 2025 announcement said the network then spanned more than 5,000 kilometres and was expected to extend to nearly 14,000 kilometres over the following years. Nearly 14,000 kilometres was a future plan, not completed fibre. October 2026 route announcement; Telstra InfraCo route and construction information; October 2025 launch announcement.
What benefits does Telstra say the network may bring?
Telstra says additional routes are intended to improve resilience and give regional communities opportunities to connect to high-capacity infrastructure. Whether a site can connect depends on service availability and network deployment; the existence of a backbone route alone is not proof of a local service. Benefits described in company announcements are intentions and forecasts, not independently measured outcomes.
Telstra’s 2025 announcement attributed projections of $29 billion in added GDP and 84,000 additional jobs by FY2040 to an Oxford Economics report. Those are forecasts, not results already achieved. In its 7 October 2026 announcement, Telstra reported an Oxford Economics scenario in which Western Australia’s digital economy could grow from $16.8 billion “today” to around $89.1 billion by FY40 under accelerated digital adoption. These figures describe a forecast scenario and horizon, not a guaranteed effect of Aura alone. The underlying Oxford Economics report is not directly available in the cited Telstra announcements, so the figures should be understood as reported by Telstra. 2026 announcement; 2025 announcement.
