For analysis, it lets you select fields, filter records, combine tables, and calculate summaries where the data is stored. It is often called a lingua franca of data analysis because many relational database systems use SQL—but their supported features and syntax are not always identical.
What SQL does
A relational database organizes information into tables made up of rows and columns. A SQL statement can describe those tables, add or change their contents, or request a result from them. You can think of an analytical query as a request to shape stored data: choose the fields you need, specify the table, apply conditions, and, when useful, combine or summarize records.
SQL is broader than the queries analysts write. Database documentation also covers table creation, data types, functions, and performance tuning. The PostgreSQL project’s official tutorial introduces relational database concepts and SQL; its SQL command reference covers the language in greater depth.
How SQL supports analysis
A common progression starts with retrieving a few columns, then filtering rows, combining related tables, and summarizing the results. Each step answers a different question: what information matters, which records qualify, how records relate, and what patterns appear across groups.

Select columns and filter rows
A query can return only the fields an analysis needs and restrict the result to rows that meet specified conditions. This makes it possible to work with a focused result rather than inspect every field and record in a table.
Join related tables
Related information is often stored in separate tables. A join combines records according to a relationship between them, allowing a query to analyze information that would otherwise be split across tables.

Group records and calculate aggregates
Grouping organizes rows into categories, and aggregate functions calculate a value for each group—for example, a count or other summary. PostgreSQL’s tutorial covers querying, joins, and aggregate functions as part of its introductory material.
Explore more advanced features
As needs grow, SQL can also support views, transactions, foreign-key relationships, and window functions. These concepts extend beyond a simple retrieve-and-filter query; the PostgreSQL tutorial introduces them, while the SQL manual provides broader language documentation.

Why SQL is called a lingua franca—and where that analogy stops
SQL has an international standards framework. ISO/IEC 19075-10:2024 provides guidance on the SQL model, including the relational model, integrity, transactions, constraints, queries, views, and statements: ISO/IEC 19075-10:2024.
A standard does not mean that every database product supports every feature or behaves identically. PostgreSQL explicitly notes that some of its language features are extensions to the standard in its SQL documentation. For that reason, treat relational concepts such as filtering, joining, and grouping separately from syntax or features tied to a particular database. Label examples with the database they target, especially when they use specialized functions, data types, procedural features, or advanced syntax. The sources cited here do not establish a current, product-by-product compatibility matrix.

Does a query return rows in a useful order?
Not necessarily. A table’s rows are not inherently ordered, and a result’s order is not guaranteed unless the query explicitly requests one. PostgreSQL explains this in its tutorial on database concepts. When sequence matters—such as showing the newest records first—include an explicit ordering clause in the query rather than relying on the order in which rows happen to appear.

Begin with hands-on practice using a database and examples written for it. The PostgreSQL 17 tutorial describes itself as an introduction to PostgreSQL, relational database concepts, and the SQL language. It covers getting started, creating and populating tables, queries, joins, aggregates, updates, deletions, views, foreign keys, transactions, and window functions; it is an introduction, not a complete treatment.

For a more comprehensive reference, use the PostgreSQL SQL manual, which discusses syntax, tables, queries, data types, functions, and tuning. If you prefer a printed book, choose one that clearly identifies its target database and dialect, includes runnable exercises, and matches your experience level. A book can provide a structured learning path, but its examples may be specific to one product.
