Spam is an unwanted or unsolicited communication. It can be ordinary marketing, but it can also be a deceptive attempt to get you to click a link, share personal information or send money. The safest response depends on the channel: filter or block unwanted messages, avoid engaging with suspicious ones, and verify unexpected claims using contact details you already know are genuine.

What spam means—and what it does not

In everyday use, spam covers unwanted email, sales calls, robocalls and text messages. Some of it is merely unwelcome advertising. A scam or phishing message is different: it uses deception, often by impersonating a company or agency, to prompt a reply, click, payment or disclosure of sensitive information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) notes that legitimate marketing and scam messages can both arrive in unwanted email; an unwanted message is not automatically fraudulent. FTC guidance on dealing with spam

There is no single general legal definition in the sources cited here that makes every unwanted call, email and text legally equivalent. The U.S. CAN-SPAM Act sets requirements for covered commercial email; it is not a blanket prohibition on all spam or a law governing every communications channel.

Common types of spam

Email spam

Email spam ranges from unsolicited commercial offers to messages that imitate a bank, retailer or other organization. Fraudulent messages may use misleading subject lines or links to solicit account credentials or financial details. For ordinary unwanted marketing, the FTC recommends using your email provider’s spam controls and unsubscribing when appropriate. If a message appears fraudulent, do not treat its unsubscribe link as a safe way to engage; use your provider’s reporting controls instead.

In the United States, the CAN-SPAM Act applies to commercial email and addresses materially false or misleading header information and deceptive subject headings. It requires covered messages to include a functioning opt-out mechanism and generally to identify the message as an advertisement and provide a valid physical postal address. Senders must honor opt-out requests within ten business days. These requirements do not mean every unwanted email is illegal. CAN-SPAM Act statutory text

Spam texts and phishing messages

Text scams often impersonate a bank or company and claim there is suspicious account activity, a payment problem, a fake invoice, a prize, a delivery issue or an unpaid toll. Other approaches include phony job offers and “wrong number” conversations. The examples change, but the aim is often to get you to reply, call a number in the message, visit a spoofed website, enter a password or account number, or pay a fabricated fee. Some links may install malware. FTC: How to Recognize and Report Spam Text Messages and FTC alert on unexpected texts

If a message might be genuine, the FTC advises: “If you think the message might be real, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real. Not the information in the text message.” Use a contact method you find independently, not a link or number supplied by the message. FTC verification advice

Phone spam and robocalls

Unwanted calls include live sales calls, recorded sales calls and scam calls. A robocall delivers a recorded message rather than connecting you to a live speaker. Caller ID is not proof of who is calling: displayed names and numbers can be spoofed. The FTC puts it plainly: “You can’t trust caller ID because phone numbers can be faked.” FTC guidance on unwanted calls and texts

Call-blocking and labeling services can reduce unwanted calls, but they may also screen calls you want. Registering a number with the U.S. Do Not Call Registry is not a shield against scammers who ignore the rules. For a traditional landline, the FTC describes physical call-blocking devices that may rely on databases of known scam numbers or let the owner create a block list; these devices address calls, not email or texts. FTC: How To Block Unwanted Calls

How to avoid and manage spam

1. Filter or block it in the channel where it arrives

  • Email: Use your email provider’s spam or junk controls. Unsubscribe from unwanted commercial mail when it appears legitimate.
  • Mobile calls and texts: Check your phone’s built-in options for filtering or blocking unknown senders and calls, and use your carrier or messaging app’s controls where available.
  • Home phone: Check whether your phone service offers call blocking. A separate blocking device is an option for some traditional landlines.

Blocking tools can hide wanted calls or messages as well as unwanted ones. Review settings and, when needed, check filtered messages or blocked-call lists for legitimate contacts. FTC spam guidance and FTC call-blocking guidance

2. Pause before responding to an unexpected request

Do not click a surprise link, call an unfamiliar number in the message or provide personal or financial details in response to an unsolicited request. If the message claims to be from a bank, business or agency, check through its independently verified website or phone number. A familiar logo, urgent wording or plausible caller ID does not establish that the sender is genuine. FTC advice on unexpected texts

3. Report suspicious messages and calls through the right route

  • Unwanted text: Use your phone’s “report junk” feature or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). You can also report it through your messaging app or provider.
  • Scam or fraud: Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Unwanted call in the United States: If you are reporting an unwanted call and did not lose money, the FTC directs consumers to DoNotCall.gov. If you lost money to a phone scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

After reporting, delete the message or call record if you do not need it. Do not reply to a suspicious sender just to tell them to stop. FTC reporting guidance

4. Weigh call-blocking tools’ trade-offs

Built-in phone and provider features may be enough for some people. Third-party apps and services may use call data or user reports to identify likely unwanted calls; some charge fees or request access to your contacts. Before installing one, check what it blocks or labels, whether you can allow trusted callers, what it costs and how it handles your data. Blocking can have false positives regardless of which option you choose. FTC call-blocking guidance

What CAN-SPAM covers in the United States

CAN-SPAM is a U.S. law focused on commercial email. Among other requirements, it addresses misleading sender information and subject lines, requires a working way to opt out, and generally requires a valid physical postal address. A sender must honor an opt-out within ten business days. The law does not make every unwanted communication illegal, and its email requirements should not be generalized to calls or texts. Readers outside the United States should consult their local consumer-protection authority and communications regulator. CAN-SPAM Act statutory text
