SpaceX Starship is a two-stage launch system: the Starship spacecraft, which also serves as the upper stage, sits atop the Super Heavy booster. SpaceX is developing both stages for reuse and intends the system to carry cargo and crew to destinations including the Moon and Mars. Those are design goals, not yet routine operational capabilities: Starship remains in flight testing.
What is SpaceX Starship?
“Starship” can refer to the spacecraft alone or, more commonly, the complete launch system. The complete system combines the Starship upper stage with the Super Heavy first-stage booster. SpaceX describes it as a reusable transportation system for crew and cargo, designed for missions ranging from Earth orbit to deep space. SpaceX’s Starship overview presents the specifications and planned uses as company design information.

SpaceX identifies the system’s propellants as methane and oxygen. Its March 2020 Starship Users Guide discusses preliminary payload accommodation, but it predates later vehicle generations and should be treated as historical background rather than a current definitive performance or interface manual.

Is Starship fully reusable?
SpaceX says both stages are designed to return to the launch site and be caught for rapid turnaround. Reuse is therefore central to the intended system, but a design goal is not the same as demonstrated, routine service. Starship is still in flight testing, and SpaceX’s published descriptions do not by themselves establish regular recovery and reuse at the planned pace.
How will Starship get to Mars?
The Mars architecture depends on refilling propellant in low Earth orbit. A Starship bound for Mars would launch, then receive propellant transferred from tanker Starships before departing Earth orbit. This allows the mission vehicle to leave with the fuel needed for its longer journey rather than relying on a single launch to carry all of that propellant from the ground. SpaceX describes orbital refueling as part of its planned approach; it should not be read as an established operational service. SpaceX’s Mars page outlines the company’s concept.

Entry, landing and longer-term plans
SpaceX describes Mars atmospheric entry at 7.5 km/s and says Starship’s heat shield is designed for multiple entries. The company also expects Mars entry to involve harsher conditions because of atomic oxygen. These are engineering descriptions of a planned mission, not evidence that Starship has completed a Mars entry or landing.
SpaceX’s stated objectives for the first human explorers include surveying local resources, preparing landing surfaces, setting up power generation and building habitats. Its longer-term vision includes producing methane and oxygen from local resources. These remain company plans and aspirations.

When will Starship go to Mars?
SpaceX says cargo flights to the Martian surface for research, development and exploration will start no earlier than 2028. That is a company-stated earliest timeframe, not a confirmed launch date or assurance that the vehicle will be ready then. SpaceX also lists a price of $100 million per metric ton for Mars cargo missions; this is the company’s stated rate, not an independently validated market price. SpaceX’s May 12, 2026 update introduced its V3 architecture and said the precise timing of demonstrations would depend on upcoming flight-test progress. SpaceX’s updates page is the company’s source for development announcements.

SpaceX reports that Flight 13 launched on July 24, 2026. The company described it as the second flight of V3 vehicles and the first Starship flight to deploy next-generation Starlink V3 satellites. Its missions page listed Starship Flight 14 for September 28, 2026, but the available listing does not establish that flight’s outcome. Consult SpaceX’s missions page for the latest status; flight listings and outcomes can change.
