It may be a focused cart-and-checkout component or part of a larger ecommerce platform that also manages products, payments, shipping, inventory, and orders.
What shopping cart software does
The cart is the part of an online buying experience where a shopper keeps items they intend to purchase and can adjust the selection before buying. A cart review commonly shows the chosen products, quantities, prices, discounts, and total. The shopper can change quantities or remove items before continuing.
Checkout is the next stage: the shopper provides the information needed to complete the transaction, such as customer, shipping, and billing details, selects a payment method, reviews the order, and submits it. The resulting order is then handled by the store’s systems. Features and the exact sequence vary by product.
How the cart-to-order flow works
- Browse and select: The shopper views products in an online storefront and adds chosen items to the cart.
- Review and adjust: The cart presents the selected items and relevant quantities, prices, discounts, and totals. The shopper can revise the selection.
- Enter checkout: The shopper supplies required customer and shipping information, chooses a payment method, and reviews the order.
- Submit the order: Checkout completes the purchase flow and creates an order. Some platforms also check inventory availability during checkout.
For example, Shopify’s checkout documentation describes customers providing shipping and payment details and placing an order, with inventory checked as checkout proceeds. WooCommerce documentation describes cart review and checkout tasks including shipping and billing information, payment, and order review. Those are examples of platform behavior, not a guarantee that every implementation works identically.

What the term includes—and what it may not
“Shopping cart software” does not have one fixed product boundary. In a narrow sense, it means the cart and checkout capabilities that support a purchase. In broader usage, it can refer to software for running much of an online store, including product catalogs, payment and shipping integrations, inventory, order handling, and customer or store administration.
For instance, WooCommerce describes itself as an open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress, with documentation spanning products, shipping, payments, and orders as well as cart and checkout. BigCommerce’s shopping-cart glossary connects the term with purchase facilitation and broader merchant functions. These examples illustrate different scopes; they should not be read as a claim that the products are interchangeable.

Cart software versus a storefront
The cart and checkout do not have to be displayed through a platform’s prebuilt storefront. Some systems expose APIs that let developers connect cart and checkout functions to a custom or “headless” storefront. BigCommerce’s cart and checkout API documentation is one example of this approach. It can support a custom presentation, but requires a storefront implementation that communicates with the commerce system.
What to consider when evaluating cart software
Because the term can describe either a component or a broader platform, first identify which parts of the sales process you need the software to handle. These evaluation dimensions help distinguish options without assuming that one is best for every merchant:

- Hosting and maintenance: Determine whether the service is hosted for you or runs on infrastructure you manage, such as a WordPress site.
- Checkout and storefront control: Decide whether a standard storefront and checkout meet your needs or whether you require custom presentation or API-based integration.
- Connected workflows: Check how the system supports the payment, shipping, inventory, and order processes your store relies on.
- Platform scope: Establish whether you need only cart and checkout or also product, customer, and store-management capabilities.
For example, a WordPress-based approach such as WooCommerce and an API-driven custom storefront represent different implementation choices. Choosing between them depends on your hosting, customization, integration, and operating requirements—not merely on the label “shopping cart software.”

The term alone does not establish how a product handles payment-card data. A cart or platform may connect to payment services, but data storage and processing arrangements depend on the particular product and configuration. Check the provider’s documentation for those specifics rather than assuming the cart itself stores or processes card details.
