Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface: a family of professional digital video connections used to carry video—and, when supported, embedded audio—from cameras and production equipment to devices such as switchers, monitors, recorders, and encoders. For live streaming, SDI usually connects a camera or switcher to an encoder; the encoder compresses the video and sends it over a network using a protocol such as RTMP or SRT. SDI is a production connection, not an internet streaming protocol.
How SDI fits into a live-streaming setup
A typical signal path is:
Camera or switcher → SDI cable → compatible encoder → Ethernet/network → streaming destination
The camera or switcher produces a baseband video signal. An encoder accepts that signal, compresses it into a stream, and sends it across the network. The exact formats and protocols depend on the encoder and destination. For example, Blackmagic Design lists its Streaming Encoder 4K as supporting a range of SDI standards and Ethernet livestreaming with RTMP using H.264 or SRT using H.264 or H.265; those specifications describe that model, not every SDI encoder. See Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Processors technical specifications.
Check compatibility at each link
- Confirm that the camera or switcher’s SDI output standard is accepted by the encoder’s SDI input.
- Match the resolution and frame rate from source through encoder and destination.
- Check any required signal level or mapping, along with color and HDR requirements.
- Confirm that the encoder supports the network protocol and codecs you intend to use.
- Check whether embedded audio and ancillary data are supported and configured as needed.
SDI is a family of standards, not one universal signal
HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, 6G-SDI, and 12G-SDI identify link generations and provide a useful first clue about capability. They do not, on their own, guarantee that two devices will interoperate. The standards include distinct electrical interfaces and ways of mapping image formats and ancillary data. For example, SMPTE’s OV 2082-0:2018 overview describes single-link 12G-SDI mapping and carriage of multiple lower-rate signals. Check both devices’ supported standard, level or mapping, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying only on the label “SDI.” The SMPTE public documents index provides access to the standards-document listings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Cables, connectors, and signal reach
SDI installations commonly use 75-ohm coaxial cable with BNC connectors. Cable reach is not a universal SDI distance: it depends on the signal rate, cable construction and condition, connectors, patch panels, and the equipment’s transmission and reception capabilities. Avonic’s SDI overview states up to 300 m for coaxial cable in one context while separately cautioning that HD bit rates are limited to 100 m. Treat those as figures from that overview, not a standards-wide guarantee for your cable or installation.
For a real run, follow the cable manufacturer’s attenuation guidance and the specifications for the connected equipment. Long or demanding runs may call for fiber or conversion equipment, but the right choice depends on the system. Cable drivers, equalizers, and retimers can also matter to signal integrity. In a technical overview published on 17 August 2023, Texas Instruments explains: “Cable drivers help meet TX requirements for rise/fall time, overshoot/undershoot, jitter, and amplitude. Equalizers help meet RX return loss requirements, while retimers help with jitter and overall signal integrity.”

SDI compared with managed IP video
SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 are different approaches to moving professional media through a facility. SDI commonly uses point-to-point coaxial links. ST 2110 carries professional media over a managed IP network as separate, synchronized essence streams, including active video, PCM digital audio, and ancillary data. SMPTE describes the suite as designed to replace long-lived SDI infrastructure in broadcast and production facilities, and notes that it remains under active development. It is not simply another SDI cable format, nor does it mean every streaming setup should replace SDI with IP. Read SMPTE’s ST 2110 overview.
| Decision factor | SDI | SMPTE ST 2110 |
|---|---|---|
| Transport approach | Point-to-point production links, commonly coaxial cable with BNC connectors. | Separate media essence streams carried over a managed IP network. |
| Facility design | Uses compatible SDI interfaces and physical cabling between devices. | Requires network infrastructure and a timing and synchronization design suited to the system. |
| Routing and deployment | Consider the installed cabling, supported links, and equipment ecosystem. | Can offer network-based routing flexibility, with network engineering requirements to match. |
| Best comparison question | Does the existing plant and equipment support the required signal format and run? | Does the facility have the managed network, synchronization, and compatible equipment the workflow needs? |
Choosing SDI equipment for a stream
Start with the whole signal path, not a single headline specification. A converter or monitor may accept SDI without encoding or streaming to a destination. An encoder must support the input format as well as the output protocol and codec your workflow requires.

Manufacturer specifications are essential because capabilities vary by model. Blackmagic Design’s Streaming Encoder 4K is one documented example, not a universal template for SDI equipment.
