It is designed to reduce the risk from malicious images that could be used in zero-click attacks—not to guarantee protection from every exploit or attack vector.
How Samsung Message Guard works
Some messaging attacks can target a vulnerability when a device processes a received image, potentially without the recipient opening it. Message Guard is designed to limit that risk by isolating an incoming image from the rest of the device and handling it in a sandbox. Samsung says the image cannot freely access device files or interact with the operating system while it is being processed.
The feature operates in the background; Samsung says users do not need to activate it for each image. Its scope is image-file handling in supported messaging apps. It should be understood as a mitigation layer for that kind of threat, not as proof that a Galaxy phone is immune to zero-click attacks.
Which messaging apps does Message Guard support?
Samsung Knox documentation, last updated March 7, 2025, lists six supported apps:

Samsung announced third-party messaging support in October 2023, naming Messenger, Telegram, KakaoTalk, and WhatsApp. Its later Knox documentation includes those services alongside Samsung Messages and Google Messages.
Is Message Guard enabled by default?
Samsung says Message Guard is included with Auto Blocker and enabled by default on Galaxy devices running One UI 6.0 or later. The company also says it remains enabled for Samsung Messages and Google Messages whether Auto Blocker is switched on or off. That statement should not be generalized to every supported third-party app or every Galaxy software configuration.

Which Galaxy devices have Message Guard?
At launch on February 17, 2023, Samsung said the feature was available on the Galaxy S23 series, with a rollout planned for other Galaxy smartphones and tablets running One UI 5.1 or later. Samsung’s current Knox documentation describes support on devices running One UI 6.0 or later. These statements reflect different points in the feature’s rollout; check the software and support information for your specific Galaxy model rather than assuming all models have identical availability.
What image files does it handle?
Samsung’s February 2023 launch announcement specifically named PNG, JPG/JPEG, GIF, ICO, WEBP, BMP, and WBMP. That is the format list Samsung published at launch, not a verified current compatibility matrix; the later Knox support page does not establish an updated list of image formats.

What Message Guard does—and does not—promise
Samsung presents Message Guard as a way to reduce exposure to malicious image payloads by containing their processing. Its official descriptions establish the intended function and supported apps, but they do not amount to independent security testing or a guarantee that all zero-click exploits are blocked. Other vulnerabilities and attack paths may fall outside the feature’s stated image-sandboxing scope.
Samsung’s February 2023 announcement said, “While there has been no sign of such attacks on Samsung Galaxy smartphones”. That was Samsung’s statement at that time, not a current threat assessment or evidence of immunity.
