Jagex’s October 6, 2026 update says it is re-evaluating the plan after player feedback and considering substantial revisions. The original details—including separate progression, economy, hiscores, membership, and launch timing—should therefore be treated as provisional, not final.
What RuneScape Reignited was meant to be
In its original announcement, Jagex presented Reignited as a permanent character type for players who wanted to begin RuneScape with fresh progression and a separate economy and hiscores. It was intended to give new and returning players a shared starting point rather than placing them immediately into the established game economy. The announcement described a character option within RuneScape, not a new standalone MMO. Jagex’s original announcement and PC Gamer’s coverage both frame it as a new character type.
Under that proposal, a new account would choose between a Veteran character and a Reignited character. The character types could play in the same worlds, but their progression and economies would remain separate. Jagex’s FAQ also said character types could not be changed and that the economies would not be merged on a predetermined schedule. Those mechanics have not been confirmed as part of a revised plan.
What Jagex said on October 6, 2026
Jagex’s October 6 update said, “We are re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited.” The studio acknowledged that its announcement had left existing players feeling they were no longer its focus and apologized. It said the fresh-economy idea had potential for new and returning players, but the plan needed to better recognize Veteran players’ achievements and ensure they benefit from newcomers.

Jagex said it was exploring substantial revisions, including ways to represent Veteran progress and reduce a hard split between communities. It was also reviewing the requirement for Reignited characters to have a separate membership. The update said the studio planned to present proposals for player feedback by the end of the week after October 6; it did not establish that those proposals were subsequently published or specify final mechanics or timing.

The ten-day access period and membership requirement are terms from the original FAQ, not settled current commitments. Likewise, the original dates should not be treated as a confirmed launch schedule after Jagex announced a review.

Why players objected to the original plan
The core trade-off was a fresh start for one group versus the risk of making established progress feel less valuable or dividing the community. Jagex’s update listed concerns that Veteran progress could lose value, Veteran worlds could lose population, and restrictions between character types could fragment social play. Players also questioned whether Veteran-bound cosmetics and items would feel cut off, whether they would feel pressured to restart, and whether paying for another membership was reasonable. These were concerns raised about the proposal, not confirmed outcomes.
Jagex’s 2026 roadmap framed the year around RuneScape’s 25th anniversary and work across core systems, visuals, combat, quality-of-life features, and new content. The Reignited announcement positioned a fresh start as a way for new and returning players to encounter the game’s long history without entering a mature economy. That was Jagex’s rationale; it does not settle whether the design would achieve that goal or how it would affect existing players. Jagex’s 2026 roadmap announcement provides that anniversary context.

Should you choose a Reignited character?
There is no final choice to make until Jagex publishes the revised proposal and confirms its terms. The original concept may appeal to players who want to build from a new starting point in a less mature economy. Players invested in Veteran progress, items, or cosmetics would need to weigh how the revised rules treat that progress and how interaction between character types works.

- Look for the final rules on whether progress, items, cosmetics, and social interactions remain separate.
- Check whether character types can be changed and whether the economies can ever merge.
- Confirm membership requirements and launch dates from Jagex’s updated announcement rather than relying on the original FAQ.
