ROCm is AMD’s open software stack for GPU-accelerated computing. It combines the runtime, compilers, libraries, developer tools and framework integrations used to run workloads such as AI and high-performance computing on supported AMD GPUs. It is a platform—not a GPU model, a single driver or a programming language.
What is ROCm?
AMD describes ROCm as “the AMD open software stack for GPU-accelerated computing.” Its current ROCm 10.1.0 Core SDK provides foundational infrastructure for workloads including artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. AMD ROCm documentation
The practical way to understand ROCm is as a set of layers. Developers can use low-level interfaces and libraries to run GPU work; frameworks and applications sit above them and rely on compatible components underneath. The components must work together for a particular hardware and software configuration.
How does ROCm work?
Runtime and GPU access
Host-side program code uses the runtime to manage GPU work: allocating device memory, transferring data between the computer and GPU, launching kernels, and coordinating asynchronous operations with streams, events and synchronization. Kernels describe the parallel work that runs on the GPU. HIP provides this host-and-device programming model for AMD GPUs. AMD HIP documentation

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compilers and developer tools
Compilers such as clang and hipcc translate GPU code for execution. ROCm also includes tools for tasks such as profiling and debugging, which help developers inspect performance and diagnose problems.
Optimized libraries
ROCm libraries implement common compute operations, including linear algebra (BLAS), fast Fourier transforms (FFT), solvers, sparse computations, random-number generation and deep-learning functions. Frameworks and applications can call these optimized implementations rather than building every operation themselves.

Frameworks and applications
Frameworks and inference engines use the lower-level ROCm components to run workloads. AMD’s ROCm 10.1.0 release notes include entries for PyTorch, JAX, vLLM, SGLang, TensorFlow, ONNX Runtime and MIGraphX. Those entries do not mean every framework supports every GPU or operating system; support varies by the specific entry and configuration. ROCm 10.1.0 release notes
Is ROCm AMD’s version of CUDA?
ROCm and NVIDIA CUDA serve a similar broad purpose: both provide software for programming GPUs and running accelerated applications. But ROCm is not simply a renamed CUDA, and HIP—the principal C++-oriented programming interface in ROCm—is not the whole platform.

AMD defines HIP as “a C++ runtime API and kernel language for AMD GPUs.” Its familiar C++ model and API compatibility with equivalents in the CUDA ecosystem can make porting more practical. HIPIFY can convert many CUDA API calls, but AMD warns that HIP is not a drop-in CUDA replacement. Existing applications may need manual code changes and performance tuning. AMD HIP documentation
Can you use ROCm on Windows?
Some configurations are listed for Windows: ROCm 10.1.0 release notes include Windows 11 25H2 for certain Radeon and Ryzen configurations. This is not a blanket promise that every ROCm feature, GPU or framework works on Windows. Check the release notes and compatibility information for the exact GPU family, operating system and framework you plan to use before installing. ROCm 10.1.0 release notes

Which AMD GPUs support ROCm?
Support depends on the ROCm release and the full system configuration, not just the GPU’s brand or model. AMD’s Linux system-requirements page lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT for compute workloads. That listing is specific to the documented Linux requirements; it does not establish support for every operating system or ROCm release. AMD also provides separate guidance for Radeon and Ryzen graphics use. AMD Linux system requirements

- The exact GPU or APU appears in AMD’s compatibility information.
- Your operating system and, on Linux, kernel are supported for that device family.
- The required AMD driver and firmware versions are compatible.
- Your chosen framework or library supports that GPU target and operating system.
AMD’s ROCm 7.14.1 compatibility matrix says the platform relies on a coordinated set of firmware, driver and user-space components. Its release notes also caution that operating-system listings are general and actual support can vary by GPU or APU. Check AMD’s ROCm compatibility matrix for the exact combination; the matrix is dated 2026-09-02, and release details can change. The ROCm 10.1.0 release notes were published 2026-10-05. What to expect before installing ROCm
ROCm is most useful when your intended application or framework supports your exact AMD GPU and operating-system setup. A GPU that is not listed may happen to start with some software, but that does not make the configuration officially supported. Likewise, a framework’s ROCm availability does not prove that every one of its versions works on every supported device.
For an installation decision, use the release-specific compatibility information first, then confirm the framework’s own support entry. Do not assume CUDA code will run unchanged: HIP can assist with porting, but manual changes and tuning may be required.
