Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a messaging standard that lets supported phones, apps, and carrier services offer richer messaging than basic SMS and MMS. It is a protocol—not a messaging app—and its available features depend on the devices, apps, carriers, and regions involved.
What does RCS mean?
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. Google for Developers defines it as “a standards-based communication protocol that brings rich messaging functionality to carrier networks.” In plain language, it is a shared way for compatible messaging services to support features beyond traditional text and picture messaging. How does RCS work?
RCS is not a standalone app. It is a protocol used by messaging apps and services that support it. The GSMA Universal Profile provides a shared set of features and technical enablers intended to make RCS development and deployment more consistent across operators, device makers, and operating systems. It does not mean every RCS service implements the same features. GSMA Universal Profile overview GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 document
What features can RCS add?
Depending on the app and service, RCS can support features such as:

How is RCS different from SMS and MMS?
SMS and MMS are familiar carrier messaging services, while RCS is designed to enable a richer feature set, including enhanced media and conversation indicators. The practical difference depends on what both sides of a conversation support. If RCS is unavailable or not enabled for everyone in a conversation, messages may instead be sent as SMS or MMS. Does RCS work on every phone and network?
No. RCS availability depends on the device, messaging app, carrier, and country or region. Google describes RCS support on Android and select iPhone devices, but that does not establish universal availability across all phones or networks. Check the relevant app and carrier for current support in your location. Google Messages RCS support
Are RCS messages end-to-end encrypted?
Not every RCS conversation should be assumed to have end-to-end encryption. Google says conversations between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default in Google Messages; that statement is specific to that service and those conversations. Google also notes that cross-platform security standards are being defined. Separately, GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 includes requirements and a user experience for end-to-end encryption, but that does not establish that every carrier, app, or RCS conversation has deployed it.
