The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. QSSR arrives through game updates as an additional graphics option; it is not a new console feature that automatically applies to every game.
What is QSSR on PS5?
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, describing it as an AI-upscaling tier developed from Project Amethyst, its graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony presents QSSR as an evolution of PSSR, the upscaling technology introduced on PS5 Pro. Sony’s announcement says PSSR’s computational demands had made similar image-quality improvements impractical on the standard PS5.
To adapt the approach for PS5, Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed for the console’s performance constraints. Sony’s stated goal is to improve image detail and stability. The announcement does not provide a technical specification showing how the technique works in each game.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two games that were being patched to add QSSR as an optional graphics mode:

- Ghost of Yōtei
Sony said it plans to make QSSR broadly available to PlayStation developers, but its announcement named no further confirmed games and gave no schedule for additional releases. Support depends on each game and its update; the announcement does not describe a system-wide toggle that enables QSSR in unsupported titles.
Do I need a PS5 Pro or new hardware?
No new hardware is indicated for QSSR on the standard PS5. Sony describes it as an option being added to supported PS5 games through patches. You will need a game that has received an update adding QSSR, and the option will apply within that title rather than across the console.

How does QSSR compare with PSSR?
Sony positions PSSR as the higher upscaling tier for PS5 Pro and QSSR as an approach adapted for the standard PS5. Its announcement describes QSSR’s streamlined network and hand-tuned implementation, but does not publish measurements that would support a numerical comparison.
| Technology | Platform and positioning | What Sony says | Measured comparison |
|---|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Standard PS5; adapted for the console | Designed to improve image detail and stability in supported games | No resolution, frame-rate, or image-quality benchmark stated in the announcement |
| PSSR | PS5 Pro; positioned by Sony as the higher tier | Introduced on PS5 Pro | No direct quantitative comparison with QSSR stated in the announcement |
What improvement should players expect?
Sony says QSSR improves image detail and stability, but the announcement offers no resolution targets, frame-rate effects, percentage gains, or controlled before-and-after results. The real-world effect may vary by game and graphics mode; a numerical performance benefit cannot be inferred from the announcement alone.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Sony published favorable descriptions from developers of the two named games. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR “adds more pixel-level clarity and stability” in environments including Madripoor and Shinjuku. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said it resolves fine details and provides temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer statements published by Sony, not independent benchmark results.
