For end-to-end tests, most teams should start with @playwright/test, which combines a test runner, assertions, isolation, parallel execution, and reporting tools. It can run tests against Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, with additional browser channels and device configurations available when the project needs them.
What Playwright does
Playwright lets developers control a browser through code to check how a website behaves. It can automate interactions such as navigating pages, filling forms, and clicking controls, making it useful both for repeatable end-to-end tests and broader browser automation.
Playwright Test is the end-to-end testing framework for modern web applications. It brings together the test runner, assertions, test isolation, parallelization, and tooling. The lower-level Playwright Library provides browser automation APIs; for most end-to-end testing, Playwright recommends using @playwright/test instead. See the Playwright introduction and Library guide.
How to get started
The official getting-started guide walks through installing Playwright with a package manager, creating a configuration and starter tests, running those tests, and opening an HTML report. Its setup also uses the Playwright CLI to install the browser binaries required for testing.
#1 Best Overall
- Initialize the project: Follow the installation guide’s package-manager command to add Playwright and create the starter configuration and test.
- Install browser binaries: Use the browser-install command provided by the guide so the local environment has the browsers required by the project.
- Run the tests: Use the generated test command or the CLI command documented in the guide.
- Review the report: Open the HTML report to inspect test outcomes and investigate failures.
Browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions. The browser guide explains that each Playwright version requires specific browser binary versions, so after upgrading Playwright, you may need to rerun the browser installation command.
Choose browser coverage for your users
Playwright documents support for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Its projects let a team run tests under different configurations, including browser or device combinations, logged-in and logged-out states, and staging or production environments. Choose the configurations that correspond to the browsers, devices, and environments your application promises to support rather than treating one successful run as proof for every target.

| Coverage choice | When it helps | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit | Check behavior across the browser engines relevant to your audience. | Each configured project is a separate run; a pass in one engine does not establish a pass in another. |
| Branded Chrome or Edge channel | Validate against a branded browser release when closer matching matters. | Use the channels and conditions documented in the browser guide. |
| Device emulation | Exercise mobile-oriented layouts or other configured device scenarios. | Emulation is a project configuration; choose it to match the testing goal and audience. |
| Upcoming browser behavior | Get early feedback on changes in a browser engine. | Engine builds and branded browser releases are not interchangeable; select according to the behavior you need to validate. |
There is an important limit to the browser names: Playwright’s Firefox and WebKit builds use project patches, so they are not direct automation of the branded Firefox and Safari applications. For Safari-like validation, Playwright advises using WebKit. The documentation also notes that macOS is closer to Safari behavior than Linux for some scenarios, including video playback. Consult the browser documentation when choosing an operating system and target.
Run and debug tests
According to the running tests guide, tests run headless and in parallel by default. When diagnosing a failure, you can target a project, run tests in headed mode, or use UI mode and reports. A project represents a particular configuration, so compare results across the configured browser and environment projects your support promise requires.

- Use a targeted project run to narrow the result to a specific browser or configuration.
- Run headed or use UI mode when seeing the browser interaction helps diagnose a failure.
- Inspect the HTML report to review outcomes and investigate failing tests.
Is Playwright the right fit?
Playwright is a strong fit when you want code-driven browser automation and repeatable end-to-end tests across multiple browser engines. It is developer software installed in a project, not a physical product. The main planning work is deciding which browser, device, operating-system, and environment combinations matter, then maintaining the corresponding browser binaries as Playwright is updated.
Playwright’s official documentation was accessed on September 30, 2026. Browser versions, operating-system support, and branded-channel behavior can change; check the current introduction and browser guide for the latest details.
