“Outlook (classic)” is the displayed name Microsoft used to distinguish the existing Outlook for Windows desktop app from new Outlook. A June 2024 report said the label change would begin the following month; “next month” is no longer a current forecast. Microsoft’s present documentation still treats new Outlook and classic Outlook as separate Windows experiences.
What did Microsoft change?
Petri reported on June 25, 2024, that Microsoft planned to rename the existing Outlook for Windows app in its displayed labels from “Outlook” to “Outlook (classic).” The report said the new wording would appear in the Start menu and installed-app list, while the app icon and executable filename would stay the same. Petri attributed the explanation to a Microsoft 365 admin-center message: the naming convention aligned with Microsoft’s support documentation and did not change the app’s status or support. The message was quoted as saying, “This is not a change in status or support for the classic Outlook app.” (Petri’s June 25, 2024 report)
In practical terms, the name was meant to make it easier to tell the established desktop app apart from new Outlook—not to announce a replacement of the classic app or a change to how it worked.
When was the rename supposed to happen?
Petri’s June 2024 report described a staged rollout by Office update channel. These were forecast dates, not confirmation that every organization received the label on schedule:

| Monthly Enterprise Channel | September 2024 |
| Semi-Annual Channel | January 2025 |
The original headline’s “next month” referred to July 2024. Microsoft’s current product pages distinguish new Outlook from classic Outlook, but they do not establish whether every tenant completed this particular label change on the forecast schedule.
How is Outlook (classic) different from new Outlook?
They are separate Outlook for Windows experiences, not simply two names for one interface. Microsoft’s feature-comparison page lists differences between them and cautions that the comparison is not exhaustive and may change as its roadmap evolves. If you rely on a particular capability, account type, or organization setting, check that specific item in Microsoft’s new Outlook and classic Outlook feature comparison rather than assuming both apps support it.

Microsoft describes new Outlook as inspired by Outlook on the web and built on a modern service architecture. Its getting-started guide covers Microsoft, work or school, and third-party account categories. Microsoft’s overview describes new Outlook as generally available for consumer accounts and offered as a preview for commercial accounts; availability can change, so consult the current Outlook for Windows overview for the latest status.

Microsoft documents a supported way to switch back to classic Outlook in the toggle flow for users who have access to that option. The exact choice depends on the Outlook version and the organization’s rollout or admin controls. Follow Microsoft’s current switch-back guidance if you are trying to return to the classic app; do not infer from the “classic” label alone that a switch is available in every setup.
